  1. Those are daft questions, and reflect more on the questioner than anything else. If you're living in something that's about to sink, you are vulnerable to becoming homeless. You are therefore a vulnerable person. Absolutely nothing to do with anything of a medical nature. People tend to live in the nicest dwelling they can afford to be in. Ergo, your residence is a rotting hulk held together by plastic and tarps, it's the best they have available. If somone is sleeping in a hedge, that's the best they can find for the night. If in a tent in the middle of winter, ditto. In a mansion on the South Downs, much the same. If you really don't think there is a housing problem in this country, you are either extremely rich, in your sixties with no children or simply keep your eyes and mind firmly shut against reality.

  2. You're welcome. I did a dissertation on how alternators work on here once, god knows where it is now. I dread doing it for the cav co axial! If you know precisely how it works, you can usually work out precisely why it doesn't ?

  3. I agree, and I think it is totally irrelevant. Like many discussions on here, the original reason for raising the point was to point out some alleged unacceptable behaviour by a couple of boats. Very quickly, this has changed emphasis to a disection of someones lifestyle, which I would suggest is of no concern to us. By forensically analysing the innocent victim we are in danger of losing the main point, which in my mind is trying to stop hire companies hiring out boats to unsuitable groups. Howard

  4. This is my bread and butter. It sounds like a starter problem to me checked or not. How big a click? little *tic* or big CLUNK! Second, can you post a picture of the unit? I can probably tell you what's wrong and talk you through the repair if so. Too late now but it's not a good idea to beat starters with a hammer unless you know what you are looking at because lots of starters these days have permanent magnets and the traditional theraputic tap can shatter the magnets. Contact serviceability varies, sometimes easy nut and bolt job, sometimes special press tools are needed. I can and will get parts at 57% discount if need be.

  8. Indeed. It is totally unacceptable to let your boat get into such a state that a passing boat sinks it.

  9. Talking generally, some people are too proud or untrusting to ask or even accept help and just try to get buy, maybe even living in a boat that is ultimately going to sink. What ever is done will cost society money, wether it is emergency accommodation, or money to help with mooring and licensing. It is sad that this case has come to this and some compassion for his situation is the decent thing to have. Driving him off the waterways to where we no longer see him does not solve the problem, it only hides it and allows us to pretend that all is well in society. It isn’t.

  10. Oh good. It was a very strange moment indeed, but quite a relief once whoever did it(!) realised what was going on! ?

  13. Telling someone that they are posting tripe and then telling them that they are boring and repetitive is not what I associate with the boating community and particularly not what I find in the canal boat community. Is this a trait you find with people with caravans? School yard bullying, methinks. Why do people have to slag other people off?

  16. I gave to say this is complete bobbins. I can afford to live in far nicer accommodation than a canal boat but choose the boat because I like it. I suspect a lot of posters here and boat dwellers in general are in the same position. I was even evicted from my first boat home by a council saying our boats must be hovels and we should not be allowed to live in them. Same high handed arrogance. It is not for you to dictate where someone else may or may not choose to live.

  17. Something has gone wrong when after years of increasing life expectancy male life expectancy shows a slight decline whereas other comparable countries who already have longer life expectancies are drawing yet further ahead. It ain't the well off that are dying younger in spite of medical advances, it is the vulnerable passing simply because of diminishing care.

  18. And when you climb into your bed tonight And when you lock and bolt the door Just think of those out in the cold and dark 'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round  And sympathy is what we need my friend And sympathy is what we need And sympathy is what we need my friend 'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round No, there's not enough love to go 'round  Now half the world hates the other half And half the world has all the food And half the world lies down and quietly starves 'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round  And sympathy is what we need my friend And sympathy is what we need And sympathy is what we need my friend 'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round No, there's not enough love to go 'round...

  22. Haha, I am actually on my way to pick prince up now.. Though Yeo is not the fastest boat so the journey from London to Wheaton ashton will take a little while. I am really looking forward to finally having Prince and to doing some winter cross-straps practice. For me there isnt really any 'home' to take prince to either, just keep moving round, but I will b around birmingham this winter and shall get him out soon enough and see whats going under the waterline.

  29. Agreed. I'm still a bit worried about the wine list though... More seriously, will the OP have the run of the ship like the crew, or are passengers corralled off in one area? One of the attractions of a trip like this for me would be the chance to see in detail how the ship is sailed. Docking in particular!

  32. To be fair, it's ages since the poor sod sold his boat and he's been stuck in a bloomin' tin tent all that time. He must have had hard times from, or be bored to death with, his Caravanworld colleagues to make him come here and take issue with Dr Bob. So, with that in mind and as he's an old ex-boater, we should make allowances. Caravaning - it could happen to any of us, you know.

  34. Plenty of people appear able to make reasonably tidy roof boxes for storage as well. I'm often amazed at what people keep on top of their boats - I guess just in case.

  35. if they are choosing a nice place tolive (boat) why do they bespoil by covering the boat in elsans, bags of rubbish and scrap. cleaning up costs nothing, nor does mopping off ; keeping exits clear may save your life when your poor maintainance lets the boat sink or go on fire.

  39. Yes. A lot more ugly. And provided they are licenced and move at round, what’s the problem with them being ‘semi sunk’ (whatever that means) or ugly? Your boat is no oil painting either.

  43. It's not an "earth" Bob, it's a screen. The better the screen, the lower the signal loss. The wigglies travel along the core and the screen keeps interference out and those good wigglies in. Good coax has a copper core and both a copper mesh and a copper (or aluminium) foil. The other kept difference is in the dielectric - the white stuff between the screen and the core. The old spec cable which worked ok with TV signals had a less effective plastic tube with spokes along which moisture could travel, whereas the better stuff has a foam dielectric which is more impervious. The stuff we should be using is WF100 (or equivalent), although you can get away with RG6 particularly if it's kept dry, a short run and/or with a strong signal, so some will justifiably swear blind by whatever appears to work for them. Same arguement applies to the push in TV connectors versus the far better F-type. If lesser stuff is working in an application, fine, but WF100 and F-type connectors is a better starting point.

  45. We used to stand a shovel on the grate front then put the newspaper up. It's used to be able to stand the heat longer. Dad made a Ali square shield with a handle for such occurances. We had a pub at the time with three, perhaps four fires to be lit.

  47. I don't agree, there is no problem with reasonable liveaboards co existing with holiday makers. We generally love them (except when they drain the pounds that we are moored on). They are mostly happy, willing and keen to learn when you point out their mistakes, keen to find out about liveaboard life, and if you share a lock flight with them might even take you out for a few beers. Its hard to grasp the stag boat issue unless you have actually witnessed it. Go and spend a few days in Bradford on Avon. They are not holiday makers, they are often drunken selfish thugs with a mission to get seriously pissed with no respect for anybody else and sometimes with a deliberate second mission to taunt, abuse and threaten other boaters and towpath walkers. ...............Dave

  48. Whilst it is sad that this guys home has sunk surely it is also his responsibility to ensure that his boat is in a state of repair that it can withstand boats passing him when moored up. The hirers may have been passing too quickly but that in itself is not going to cause a boat to sink!

  49. Take a cart horse and put it straight on the end of a rope and it will rear-up, step back and more than likely fall in the cut. As mentioned, they are used to getting an immediate reaction, which you don't get from a boat. Training will, over not too long a time, teach them though. It's quite a sight seeing a seasoned horse, plant all four feet squarely, and lean forward, waiting for the boat to react before taking a first step.
