  1. Just a belated update to say I sold Mr Bunbury in May. I believe the new owner has renamed it Blunderbus ? so give him a wave if you pass. I now have a Devon conversion Motorhome and am enjoying visiting those places the boat couldn’t reach. I still have an interest in canals and boats so may well see some of you at one of the old boat gatherings. As you can see from the pic below I’m still attracted to water. This the new van on the smallest ferry in Scotland - at 53ft it’s shorter than Mr Bunbury ?

  2. I once employed a cook who was done for growing the same in a windowbox. The local paper reported that when the magistrate asked her why she was growing it she replied "Well it's too expensive to buy the stuff".

  6. So you have to negotiate with them as opposed to declare? They have a say, like they're involved in your diesel use beyond supplying it? How bizarre! "I have diesel central heating, so I raise my domestic portion by 20%." "It's been a mild spring, so I'll only allow you 10%." "But my wife likes a warm bathroom! Please, I beg you!" "Ok, I'll allow you 15%, but only if you buy something from the shop." "Done. I'll have two extra bags of Taybrite and leave the bathroom door open." (Thanks for the tip, Tuscan)

  7. Who the hell would want to 'cruise' a 12.5 ' beam boat on a typiical UK canal?. It's not an aquatic housing estate.

  14. Woohoo! @mrsmelly has his personal raincloud back. Stand by for flood alerts shortly. You could do us all a huge favour and start boating towards the L&L or the Rochdale on your way to York

  15. Hi Everyone around is saying how much busier it is at Fradley as a result of the stoppages related exodus from the north - so why didn’t someone at CRT think that as we approach the busiest weekend of the year the sceptic tank (which i understand is often full and out of action in normal times) might be under pressure Sorry just realised ........cyclists and pedestrians don’t use elsan points!

  20. The boat builder should have checked for beams before makiing the hole and advised you. Stove collars and stoves can't always be installed exactly where you want because of this. If the beam crosses a bolt hole you'll have to hack- grind it flush with the roof and hope it doesn't weaken it. A beam alongside could be added and welded in.

  21. There's one at Braunston and another at Blisworth …… both called tunnels. After that it's wherever the towpath is on your left and another boat comes towards you.

  22. Indeed so. Of course, "sound business and commercial practice" could just see CRT deciding that they don't want that additional reservoir capacity, and putting in the stop planks. That is how business works. You may think that what you have to sell is worth money, but unless somebody wants to buy it, it isn't worth a penny. Equally, you may feel that what CRT is selling (access to the network) isn't worth what they charge for it. However, that just means that you don't want to buy what they are selling, and you can exercise your option not to buy it. Of course, if you do that, in go the planks. Perhaps you should go to the pub tonight, and demand to be paid for testing their beer, rather than paying them for it. Make sure you get a taxi home, and charge the driver for your services as a companion.

  24. It OK to make light of the use of class B drugs, pot is socially acceptable in some cultures, but having a life long friend who is totally destroyed by it does distress me greatly. He is paranoid, a hermit, cannot leave his home which is squalid. Brain gone soft years ago.

  28. Sometimes it’s not possible to fill the tank fully, so the meter can be a bit hit and miss if you don’t know how much is in there to start with. Solution - next time the tank is empty, fill it with the meter on the end of your filling hose and using a dip stick, dip every 50 litres, that way you can calibrate your dip stick. Or have two gauges, one for filling and one for emptying?

  29. It aint worth worrying about. Stick a sensibly located in line switch somewhere easily accessible and turn it off when you go to bed if such a thing wakes you up.

  31. Yup that's what I thought - they are the same as used to grow from the detritus thrown out after cleaning out my dad's canaries too - my goodness did those birds sing. Stalks make great rope for fenders - I guess that's why the OP is growing it ...............

  36. We once enquired about using the laundry there...after it was listed in the ACS laundrette list...they were most off hand and said for moorers only etc....think our phone call disturbed tea drinking....as we probably would have got diesel, gas etc at the same time they lost out....I'm amazed that a lot of marinas seem to treat visiting customers as a nuisance.....but you never know where that might lead....I know one boater that was told a pump out was too much effort....he was also going to enquire about them building his new boat too...he went elsewhere....

  41. If you use my method of carrying the windlass in your lower back in a belt than it doesn’t hang down or get in the way and doesn’t affect movement. I carry mine like this up/down lock ladders so it’s quite secure and it’s easy to whip out and place in. To try it you just need a normal belt - I won’t recommend using the same one to hold your trousers up as we don’t want to frighten the natives.

  43. I gave you sound advice in an earlier post and again in the one where I said "If you don't mind me saying so, it sounds like you've taken a bit of a flyer here if you're fitting out a boat and yet this stuff confuses you. ". A sensible reply to that would have given us an insight into your skills and abilities so the advice could be better targeted. I've always found this forum helpful to both the skilled and the unskilled, but the help required can be very different. Anyway, I already apologised if you had taken my remark the wrong way and received this terse reply; now you've taken to shouting at others who are normally really helpful, so I'll not bother you further.

  44. But if the lock below the marina is not maintained (at a cost) the water in that pound drains out and the Marina is a big dry dock.

  47. MMnnn - before we descend into too much vitriol, without even the excuse of beer, I am the owner mentioned earlier who bought Jenny Rose off that nice mrsmelly. I went though this lock backwards on my maiden voyage from the Aire and Calder to Tamworth via the Trent / Nottingham etc. in what is still my 70ft Hudson. I know from practical personal experience therefore that it's doable even when you've only owned your first narrowboat for a couple of days. End of. But it is tight, and the gates will push hard against your stern, fenders need to be up. Probably not doable for shiny boaters more proud of their paintwork than their locking skills.

  48. Thats what I was expecting from you a typical numpty relpy. I no longer own it I sold it to another forum member who also took it through Thorne lock. I also took it up there with another forum member after buying it from yet another forum member. The boats name was Jenny Rose CRT number 507293. I will remember you called me a liar I dont suffer fools too lightly. When someone gives you genuine true advice I suggest its better manners to respect what they have told you. If you realy want I will get them all to confirm it for you.........oh then again no I wont, just get on disbelieving someone due to some secondhand bought they once owned
