  1. We met this group two years ago on the BCN challenge, the boat in front ignored them and was subject to some abuse, we engaged with them and had help through the lock with smiles all round. Cheers Graham

  6. They've been there for years. Always friendly, chatty, and happy to help with the lock. Helped us out when we got stuck mid channel one year - when they failed to pull me back into the lock they offered to let some water down if I threw them my windlass and anti vandal key, an offer that was gladly accepted! Also helped my wife drag some heavy rubbish out when she couldn't open the top gate on another occasion. I think these problems are giving this group an undeserved bad name, and hope that boaters don't jump to conclusions about them.

  12. We had the pleasure of meeting Rex when we locked though in May. He mentioned to us that back in the day, he worked at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough. When they purchased the lock and cottage, they where told they could fill the lock in if they wished - thankfully they never did. We spent quite some time chatting - he has a very sunny disposition but his emphysema obviously makes working the lock very difficult. We sorted ourselves out and found the tip tin ?

  19. I don’t understand this. Even if it wasn’t up for sale what’s the problem with showing the name? I’m always bemused when I see people post a picture of their car with the number plate obscured; do they drive down the road like that? If not then why obscure it in a photo?

  20. That is impressive for a solo lock daily total!

  21. Looks like the sort of matting used to soak up a oil spill Not been up that way since 2014, Someone nicked the the mooring rings. It is in a bit of a state not like the Well Creek Trust let things slide.

  25. At First Minister's questions this morning, in response to a question tabled by Edward Mountain (Con. – Highlands and Islands) Nicola Sturgeon announced that the Government were making £1.6m available to SC for the repair of Bonnybridge and Twechar Bridges. There is, as yet, no idea of time scales but I'd be extremely surprised if they are re-opened this season. I would view this as the end of the beginning: there is still a very long way to go before the Lowland Canals are off the sick list ....... but it's a result of sorts!

  26. I don't think money is a deciding factor between cassettes and pump outs. I spend about £20 a year on my Thetford 3 cassette system so, given that I spend 4 days a week on board, perhaps thus equates to about £40 per year if I lived aboard full time, or £80 a year if there were two of us and we both poo'd and wee'd about the same amount. At £20 to £80 a year, the money is not an issue. Storing 3 cassettes is not an issue, even on a little 45ft cruiser stern. I'm on the Bridgewater and empty my cassettes at the club but, on my one trip almost the full length of the T & M, there were plenty of places to empty and, with 3 cassettes, no chance of all being full unless particularly unorganised. I bought the boat for reasons other than the toilet facilities. If it had had a pump out, that would have been equally fine.

  27. Oi, Apart from the sandals, Sheeran and Quinoa that's me yer talking about. How about the Queen Vic in Albert Square for the other side? Gloomy, backward looking, always complaining and living in the past. (I am told the square is only a stones throw from the Thames.

  29. Thanks I am very much part of the Makita club so this does sound good. The old Dyson handheld still does a great job after 8 years, but mtb tells us that the newer Dyson is not so good, so when the current one dies it could well be the Makita. Quite tempted to get one now and then we can have his and hers hoovers and I could keep mine in the engine for cleaning the dog hairs off the engine. .............Dave

  30. Of course the ultimate boat vac has got to be one that, considering space restraints, can perform more than one duty. Therefore I recommend....The Tablevac!!

  32. Of course all of these pubs will now be awash with sandal wearing pinko liberal wishy washy lefties discussing the environment, Ed Sheeran and exchanging quinoa recipes after this article. We need a Daily Mail review of the same pubs to be published immediately to redress the balance.

  36. There is quite a bit about this incident out there on the internet, found by searching "accident wooler bridge 1908", although some details don't match, e.g. The name of the engine. https://www.labonche.net/2017/09/incident-in-wooler-1908/ http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/archive/wooler-bridge-showmans-engine-accident

  41. I fitted a trim tab to the rudder, precisely designed by using a bit of metal I happened to have and bent to an angle determined by a lump hammer. It works you can now let go of the tiller. Jo just made it round Napton Junction so it goes left ok. Find out about right shortly. Cheers Graham

  42. Mine had been sunk for 2 years...(Armstrong Siddeley AS3) I also bought the sunken wooden boat wrapped round it. Motored them both 200 lock miles home after freeing up the engine without it missing a beat. It even stopped smoking after a few months. The last sentence is a lie.

  47. Hi all.... The Canal Boating Times has a new sign at Chester on the cover....all Chester signs seem to have been replaced! The Boat Museum (Sorry, the NWM or whatever it is being called now...) has new signage too! The Captain has come up with something! The Cyclist & Ramblers Trust new Blue Logo, the same blue as used on Cycleway signs! Also....they are only replacing signs that need replacing.... Any sign with the old logo is out of date, and therfore needs replacing!!! For me, they have missed out a circle....unless it represents a Uni-cycle????

  48. But however you want to count RAYMOND, and however you want to reproduce words it was still at Braunston. I stand by what I said about both RAYMOND and SATURN, and clearly I have counted RAYMOND amongst the 'historics' in error for which I am most sorry. In fact I am really sorry I bothered to put a list together at all now.
