  4. Yes we'll probably find it is something like signal crayfish they are trying to protect.

  13. If there are Otters there should we not be encouraging them so that they displace the invasive Mink?

  18. And according to the www some places have only one high tide every 24 hours rather than two. Its incredibly complicated because the oceans are sort of dragged along by the moon, so the high tide rushes round the globe, but just like a lock is slow to fill then some bits of the sea are slow because landmass or shallow water slows this tidal flow down. The double high tide in Southampton was always said to be the tide coming up each side of the Isle of Wight, but the experts say its an oscillation of water between the two masses of water either side of the English channel that just happens to "combine harmonics" at Southampton water. Some big lakes can also show a very small tide so just maybe if we did not have locks the entire canal system would show a bit of tide?????? .............Dave

  21. You live to far away from the Scottish Border to understand! With regard to how cuddly Otters are ask Terry Nutkin. One of Gavin Maxwell's Otters took his finger end off and it was "tame".

  25. Two thoughts. First aren't all mink in the UK "American" (i.e. of that species). Second I would agree it is more likely to be to do with fish stocks but it is seen as better PR to say "small wildlife" than they are eating our fish.

  27. Surely that depends on the size of any holes/gaps in the fence. Mink are such a danger to water Voles as they can get down the burrows. Does this fence have no Mink sized holes in it? If it does they will do more harm than any Otters.

  29. Agree, its the nice and straight that messes it up, same in a wide lock, you need to come in to the chosen side at a bit of an angle but no matter what you do a puff of wind will make a fool of you. Its quite possible to travel along at 45 degrees to the bank for ages with the bow refusing to come in until you stuff it into the reeds. Stupid boats.

  31. Its probably the income from fishing, most owners of fishing lakes wold like to exclude all Otters and cormorant from their lakes as they eat their expensive fish.

  32. Here goes: I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's son I'm only plucking pheasants 'till the pheasant plucker comes. Me husband is a keeper, he's a very busy man I try to understand him and I help him all I can, But sometimes in an evening I feel a trifle dim All alone, I'm plucking pheasants, when I'd rather pluck with him. I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's mate I'm only plucking pheasants 'cos the pheasant plucker's late ! I'm not good at plucking pheasants, at pheasant plucking I get stuck Though some pheasants find it pleasant I'd rather pluck a duck. Oh plucking geese is gorgeous, I can pluck a goose with ease But pheasant plucking's torture because they haven't any grease. I'm not a pheasant plucker, he has gone out on the tiles He only plucked one pheasant and I'm sitting here with piles ! You have to pluck them fresh, if it’s fresh they’re not unpleasant, I knew a man in Dunstable who could pluck a frozen pheasant. They say the village constable had pheasant plucking sessions With the vicar on a Sunday ‘tween the first and second lessons. I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's mum I'm only plucking pheasants 'till the pheasant plucker's come. My good friend Godfrey is most adept, he's really got the knack He likes to have a pheasant plucked before he hits the sack. I like to give a helping hand, I gather up the feathers, It's really all our pheasant plucking keeps us pair together. I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's friend I'm only plucking pheasants as a means unto an end ! My husband's in the forest always banging with his gun If he could hear me half the time I'm sure that he would run, For there's fluff in all my crannies, there's feathers up my nose And I'm itching in the kitchen from my head down to my toes. I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's wife And when we pluck together it's a pheasant plucking life !

  40. I think from the outset it was understood that CRT should sort the job out so that they where not reliant on Government handouts. So to increase the income They employed Chuggers = failed They got rid of skilled conscientous staff and employed contract firms (strangely these firms make big profits) They have channeled their energy into none profit making initiatives like Sustrans The fishing is a income stream that could be tapped more apparently £4 million worth of stock in canals yet where are the increase of fishing clubs leasing stretches ? The canoeing is being encouraged but no policing of licencing or mention of money from Canoe association Nature seems to be a big concern yet gives no income and is really responsibility of other bodies . They are happy that 3% of boats are not licenced yet they employ Enforcement officers whilst more boats show no name or number. There is big demand for long term moorings with or near facilities yet they are mostly empty and they keep removing them when a new marina comes along yet the new marina would probably not be willing to allow in lots of these boats for various reasons . They seem to be selling off income stream assets for short term gain .

  41. You really should be looking to fit a primary agglomerator or sedimentor as said above. Personally I would get a number of empty 4 or 6 pint milk cartons and a length of 1/2" clear plastic hose with a length of copper pipe stuck in one end. Coper pipe into tank. milk cartons on base plate with caps off and start a syphon from the bottom of the tank into the milk cartons. The clear pipe will allow you to see what you are sucking up. Keep moving the pipe over the bottom of the tank. You may well find you pull a load of water then discoloured fuel out with or without bits in it. If/when you get to nice clear red fuel stop, add Marine 16 complete to tank and repeat at least every spring. If you can't get to clear fuel then by all means consider fuel polishing or pumping all the fuel out and refilling wit new fuel plus Marine 16 Shock Treatment (the little bottle). After that use Marine 16 complete. The choice is yours but from the look of that filter I think you will get to clear fuel.

  43. Sorry I've not been back to reply. After being on here singing about how good EE network is, WiFi is bloody awful where we've been the past week, think the bad connection started at Fotheringhay, though now we're in Peterborough and the connection has picked up somewhat. We're going through Stanground lock tomorrow, so we might attempt to go onto the Lark in about a weeks time (we don't rush ?) Thanks for everyone's valuable advice - I'll be charting your advice on the map. ? So far the journey though the Nene has been magical!

  44. Something else to dodge on the canals and rivers this summer probably packed with mum, dad and kids with not a life jacket between them, what could go wrong. I expect we will also get our share going out to sea here on the east coast keeping the lifeboat busy.

  46. This is great advice for those still on the start of the learning curve. A 12v battery state of charge chart, easily found by Google will give more detail of what the readings mean. Leave the monitoring on your domestic batteries except for when checking the starter battery specifically - it'll pretty much look after itself as it recovers from a start quite early with the engine running. I'm assuming you have the more common sealed lead acid batteries. One slight caveat would be that the voltage measurement should be a 'resting' voltage, so if the missus is running her hair dryer it will drop then recover. The reading first thing in the morning will tell you how well or badly you did yesterday! My aim is never to let my domestic batteries drop beyond 60% full, more on that lower down. The good news is that you have an ammeter as well as a volt meter, which is really useful. When charging, select your domestic batteries and watch the Amps. They'll start high and slowly but steadily drop (the volts will steadily rise as the batteries fill), but up to 80% full is quite quick - it's not enough though. Charge until a steady low single figure is reached - this is "tail current". Some say 2% of your battery capacity figure, so for 440 amp hour battery capacity they go to 8.8 amps. I think that this is not far enough - I get below 2 amps before a steady state is achieved. You should really do this after each discharge, so ideally every day. 2 days will hurt your batteries a bit, 3 days a bit more. Charging to less than 100% will hurt your batteries a bit, as will discharging to 60%, 50%, 40%, etc - heavier discharges hurt more heavily. Some use 50% as their floor, I prefer 60%, others something else. It's all a compromise harder use = shorter life. There's way more, but that I hope will give you a basic idea. Good luck! Note: There's been a few replies as I've been typing, so please forgive any repetition, conflicts or thunder stealing!

  47. Hi Jack Listen to everyone on here then take heed!! Its 100k. Its very shiney, in a year or two it will not be so shiney. It is second hand the day you buy it and becomes an 80k boat. Do your self a favour buy a lovely secondhand ( Thats the term that we used for years till the bullshit term pre owned came in) boat for about 60k and with the fittings you already want and live with it for a year and find out what you realy like/need and spend the other 40k on something sensible like err beer

If you check again I finished by wishing you well with sorting out your problem. I agree that a certain post may of been a bit out of line. I can understand the genesis of the comment but newcomers may not have the background info to understand it. I also see that you posted many years ago and that you have a family waterways history. Don't be put if returning by a minor glitch.
