  1. Not really, just an indication of the thought and design that goes into a boat as compared to a skip with a lid on.

  3. There's certainly some very woolly minded thinking going on at CRT these days, aside from the obvious waste of money I'm not clear just exactly what the objective is for the canal network. To popularise the waterways in the way CRT seem to envisage it will surely set up a lot of conflicting interests, if it isn't already. Before long, if it isn't stating the bleedin' obvious, the qualities that attract people to the waterside will have disappeared. I think CRT could learn a lot from the National Trust, who by and large seem to manage the demand for access to our heritage in such a way that it never becomes overwhelming. They seem to attract a lot of private funding too.

  4. Back in the murky recesses towards the beginning of this thread there is a post from Nick reporting a communication from Ian Lane which suggests he had been led to believe by the engineers that there was 0.9m of water depth in the pound. This suggests the engineers & Ian thought this would be an acceptable depth. Disregarding the boats on the canal which require more than this to float standing still it displays a woeful understanding of what happens to a boat as it moves through the water and what happens to the water as it tries to move past the boat in a narrow channel. 0.9m was never going to work, boats of less draught than this were always going to be in trouble and that an engineer and a waterways manager didn't understand this calls into question their career choice.

  8. Ok, it is, as most of you know, the Star, ex Water Rambler. I have been cutting off the top bends which were fitted some years ago and will be replacing them with something hopefully more convincing. I took some photos and thought that we might have some fun with it. The second photo is more or less back to where waterways cut it, I might try to post another photo when the work is finished Steve

  10. Apologies for the poor quality, it's a copy of a copy. Image shows a ww2 mini submarine with members of the Royal family at the "launch". It wasn't built in Wakefield, I believe Hull. The building on the left still stands. There are two wooden barges on the far side and they too are still there, albeit on the bottom with trees growing out of them. When the river is down the stem post of at least one barge can still be seen. I'm not a submarine geek but believe this was the type where the explosive payload was carried at each side and then jettisoned under moored shipping. Hope this is of interest.

  19. Some years ago I visited XXXXXXXXXX (a country that shall not be named or the religion mentioned) where the women folk followed a 3 paces behind the men-folk and was told 'they know their place'. I recently re-visited and noticed that the women now walked in front of the men and asked my 'guide' "is this a new freedom for women, do they now have more rights ?" to which he replied "no, but after the war no one knows where all the land mines were planted"

  22. I know nothing about this craft and whether it was built in Hull or Wakefield. However, the Wikipedia entry details all the X craft and where built and one of them - X20 - was built at Huddersfield, just up the road from Wakefield. This vessel weas involved in Operation Gambit which was part of the D Day landings. She was one of 2 X craft acting as navigational aids to facilitate navigation for the invasion fleet, marking the approaches to the beaches. It may be of interest to some that during the war there were quite a few landing craft built in Wakefield, especially in preparation for D Day - this link to the peoples war has a small description of the operation (about halfway down). http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2peopleswar/stories/17/a2642717.shtml Who knew that Wakefield and Huddersfield had such connections! 36. It seems a shame that C&RT feel the need to diversify in seemingly every direction other than keeping the waterways up together they spend vast amounts of money on things that will yield very little in return whilst ignoring the parts they derive income from, the average person from a run down area that a canal passes through has little or no thought or interest for it other than it's an easy bike ride/walk along the towpath & has no thoughts if the water is drained or full to the normal level (if ever) & junk filled We have trod this path before in the 50's/70's when in general Joe Public wanted the rubbish filled ditches filled in, they were revived once I'm not so sure it would/could happen again So come on C&RT get your act together & concentrate on the job you are tasked with (Keeping the waterways viable ) not among other things however laudable of trying to solve the folk who live in depressed canal side area's mental /depression problems whilst the waterways deteriorate

  37. I fear that you have mixed this up. Electrical incongnoscenti take no notice of the above. I copy, swap add a bit and repost: Amps ohms volts, easy way to understand is to compare it to water. Volts = water pressure charge = water volume current = water flow rate and ohms(resistance) = restriction to flow, ie smaller pipe. best way to understand if you are not familiar with electricary.

  41. Quite! Fewer people could be more disillusioned with the IWA than I have become over the last decade or so. I find it quite impossible to give them any support, even if a particular initiative does from time to time seem to be sending the right message. I find the obvious more or less open distain for live-aboard boaters by many of their leadership totally devisive, even though I am not a full time live aboard myself. They would have to change massively before I could ever give them active support again.

  45. Well I would use the water tank analogy. If you have a very slow filling rate then a big tank will allow you to draw off lots of water in a hurry but it will then fill very slowly and you won't be able to do the same thing for a long time. If you have the same tank but a much faster rate of inflow you will be able to do just the same, but do it sooner. While you are off the boat the small solar panels with a huge battery bank may take a week to charge the batteries fully. When you get on the boat and start to use the energy the huge battery bank will be depleted and will eventually go flat because the charging won't keep up with the usage. That would be when you need to add other sources of electrical energy like your engine alternator or a suitcase generator or a bicycle with a dynamo to keep your really fit or all of the above. There is no getting away from it. Whatever the size of your battery bank if your charge sources can't keep up with the usage then it will eventually go flat. It's just that the fully charged big bank will take longer. Your sources of charge must be able to cope with at least your consumption. The battery bank is there as a buffer to allow you to use electrical energy faster than you are generating it, but you can't do that all the time. N

  46. The Owl and the Monkey went to Brum on a beautiful narrowboat They took lots of peanuts, and beer as well, so the nuts, they don't stick in their throat. The Monkey stands up,he's 4ft tall. He leaps from the lock gates ,fleas and all. "Faster" shouts Owl, "faster than that. Too much battenburg has made you get fat" They enter the tunnel, leading the pack. The drinkers and dawdlers left at the back. Leggin it through, the Monkey and Owl,both sat on the roof, are overtook,by non other than Laurie the Booth . It's all over now, the winner is Clarrie.Without K9 he'd be headed for Barry.

  48. The people CRT are really talking to with all this are the government. When CRT was established, the funding settlement was for ten years. The most important thing on CRT’s agenda, in my view, is getting that extended. Without the £50million a year grant, things will look very bleak. If you’re trying to convince the government to continue to put £50million a year into the canals, you could make the argument that it’s needed to subsidise the 30,000 or so people who have boats. Or you could say that x million people make use of the canals, and that the ‘well-being’ that results is worth x million (or billion, even). The first argument has no chance; the second argument has some chance. I really think that people who want the sole focus of CRT to be on boaters, and who don’t want more people using the towpaths, are being very shortsighted and are shooting themselves in the foot. Without that grant, we’ll either have to pay several times more or there will be huge cuts in maintenance. The one who was at Foxton this morning came over to chat — and in the course of conversation said that most boaters he encounters are just rude. He was a pleasant guy, just doing his job, who said he’d signed up 360 friends — and yet boaters are rude to him.
