  1. Somebody made you a moderator already? I don't see why we can't mix condolences and expressions of sorrow with respectful discussion of the safety issues. I've had my share of bereavements, including my brother's suicide, but I never felt that people should have two separate conversations with me, one to share my grief and one to discuss what happened.

  7. I think you need to get over here and start stepping onto and wandering around boats. Each narrowboat is essentially a custom built craft, and each person lives on their boat in their own way and has their own quirky demands of it. There are so many different variations in layout and style and levels of technology and comfort (or not), I find it hard to understand how you could commission a boat, or even fit one out, without having a reasonably good idea of the variations. Perhaps you have this kind of experience already -- in other boats or camper vans or tiny houses -- but your opening query doesn't suggest this. We bought our 53-footer at Braunston, and I recommend them highly, because they had a decent selection of second-hand boats, are friendly, are knowledgeable and they went out of their way to help us. Just our personal experience. We visited Whilton Marina as well, and found a good selection of boats available, though they didn't seem as discerning about what they accepted on their books as Braunston. Again, just our experience. We looked at boats up at ABNB in Crick over this past summer. We found them highly competent and knowledgeable. The woman who showed us the three boats we were interested in lived on a narrowboat herself and was refreshingly frank about what we looked at. Their individual 'boat brochures' are famed for comprehensiveness -- you could download a couple to get a flavour of what's out there at: http://www.abnb.co.uk/boats_for_sale.html I have not met anyone who has completed a narrowboat fit-out in less than 2 years good solid work. I've met uncountable people who are in their 4th or 5th year of fit-out who admit that it is something that has taken much longer than they expected. And there are hundreds of 'project boats' out there for sale by people who have given up or moved on or changed interest. I think you have to ask yourself if you'd be happy camping out in a boat a couple of years down the line. There are a few first-class boats out there that are only a couple of years old, made by quality builders and fitters, that are for sale by people who spent a lot of money only to find that the boating lifestyle wasn't really for them -- for a whole variety of reasons. If you happened to like one of these you could get a real bargain, without messing about building or commissioning over a couple of years. Just go cruising. Now. Best of luck with all this. It'll certainly will be an interesting experience!

  8. What makes me giggle is we STILL get umpteen people on such forums as this moaning about various costs etc etc relating to their CHOSEN way of life or hobby. All these costs are easy enough to find out about with basic research BEFORE boat purchase. I will again reitereate two things 1/ It is NOT cheap living on a boat 2/ It is NOT a cheap hobby

  10. I thought the reason was quite simple. If a person buys a boat and takes over the unexpired portion of the previous owner's licence they have not anywhere signed to says that they are bound by the licence terms and conditions. By making new owners sign the form when they first buy the boat, no owner can later claim that they were unaware of the obligations on licence holders. Excluding the admin charge, the refund you get is pro rata to the number of unexpired months on the licence. By getting a refund you are effectively swapping your 6 or 12 month licence for a shorter duration one. Had you bought that in the first place you would have paid a higher monthly cost anyway, so an admin charge to get closer to the cost of a shorter duration licence seem fine to me.

  11. I don't see any "fault" finding. Discussion of possible causes may well mean a life somewhere is saved and if anything positive comes from such a tragic situation then that has to be a good thing. I think perhaps what is needed is a thread where we can all celebrate the life that has been lost by sharing memories of happy times with Alex separate to this thread

  14. Many years ago a mate was passenger in his dad’s car when he saw all the masts at Rugby. “What are all those, dad?” ”Oh, they’re the transmitters for all the television programmes.” ”So what are the little masts for?” Short pause... “They’re for children’s television, son.”

  17. I thought that was why this thread was started, because the other one was locked. Also I didn't read anywhere where it said it was for paying respects, not that anyone has been disrespectful. Surly its for discussion and I am sure the mods are watching and would soon take action if it was disrespectful

  18. It really has become a sad state of affairs when every new poster is suspected of coming from the 'ThunderBug' and is on a 'wind up'. Give the newbies the opportunity to learn, if they really are on a wind up they will eventually 'out' themselves and those 'clever sods' can sit back and say "I told you so", if they are not then hopefully some of us will have helped the next generation of boaters get started.

  19. I think you’ve missed the point that his charger (and many others) switches to float too soon. Until the tail current drops to around 1% you need to stay at absorption voltage.

  20. I missed the twist! Injectors like that with the pressed steel dome should have a needle thing in the top that contacts the end of the moving element. You can see the hole for it. You can feel the injector injecting if you open the teardrop flap on the cover and put your finger on the needle Richard

  28. I don't think they manufactured many, they very quickly became obsolete when the new model 'SWMBO' was introduced. I believe the £1000 trade in offer was not well received tho'. I was fortunate and got one of the 'transition' models - SWMOO (She Who Must Occasionally Obey)

  30. It is surprisingly easy to lose an unwatched dog. The late, great Buster (the dog in my avatar, not my current GSD) decided, after 8 years of impeccable boat behaviour, to take himself for a walk once when were on the narrows approaching Llangollen. My wife commented on how much like Buster the dog on the towpath looked before we suddenly realised it was him! As we passed him, he nonchenantly stepped back onto the counter as though nothing had happened.

  33. Doesn't sound right. The shop is obliged to refund/repair/replace a faulty item, but if the item has nothing wrong with it, then there is no obligation under the "Sale of Goods Act" to refund. They might have a refund policy but its not law, and they could charge a (reasonable) restocking fee. Try buying a car, using it for 9 months then going back to the dealership for your refund and let us know how you get on.

  40. I do and prefer them to such switches as long as they are correctly wired. Nowadays I would use a Voltage Sensitive Relay instead so it works from any charge source and not just the engine. I am not sure how easy it would be to wire a near fail safe system for an ordinary split charge relay to an outboard.

  45. TBH, I've never even considered getting our dogs lifejackets, and they've all fallen in one time or another. But on larger rivers they've always been kept inside. The closest to disaster was when one of them fell in above an open ground paddle. She quickly struggled out as I dropped the paddle, but I don't think a lifejacket would have made much difference.

  48. I would like to thank Trevor's family for having an 'open door' approach to what can often be a private and personal family event. I hope they can find some peace in their hearts with the knowledge that Trevor was such a liked and respected member of the canal community, and for me his memory will live on every time I see CORONA in the future - and I hope this boat goes on to give its future owners as much pleasure as it did Trevor.
