One solid briquette of Supertherm; a third the size of the original potato. This recipe was brought to you by someone who despite repeatedly smelling baked potatoes and thinking 'Ooh, I'll have that potato with my next meal", still managed to repeatedly forget I'd remembered not to forget it.

There lies the problem. Having been to sea in very serious boats/ships in severe gales and indeed in the arctic circle in Hurricane force there is no way I would ever go to sea in a glorified skip however much preparation had been made and mods done to it. Even the Irish sea can turn within an hour from calm to bloody awful and trying to dash for cover in a skip...........no thanks. Horses for courses etc etc.

Pendant alert - the tappet setting on our OHV engines is .......................................... there is not one. The question is about valve clearances, often called tappet clearance from the days of side valve engine where the was some form of clearance that had to be set between cam follower and tappet. Now lets discuss grinding the stem of Ford valves to get the correct clearance.

That is correct. Ironically, s.8 was designed – as I understand it – specifically for boats without known owners [known owners of unregistered or unlicensed boats could and should be pursued under relevant statutory or byelaw offences respectively]. So any boat sunk, stranded, abandoned, or unlicensed/registered without a known owner, can be subjected to the s.8 procedure without further ado [having done their best to ascertain and contact an owner]. It appears that a letter was left on the boat, and provided that was because any contact information held was not useful, the necessary provisions were met and a s.8 Notice could be issued allowing 28 days for the problem to be sorted. Failing anybody turning up and sorting the situation out within that time, the boat could be removed. Additionally, if pertinent, if the boat was considered an obstruction CaRT could move the boat away so as to ameliorate the obstruction - and do so without any notice at all.

It did take me 5 mins to convince google to allow me to breath ...but got there in the end. I will now have a play with it responding to a gps position. I have sailed / motored quite a few miles in my time and the Irish Sea is one of the worst seas. It is relatively shallow and (even tho' 60+ miles wide) the sea is 'squashed' between the two land masses. The tides running over some of the shallow ridges make for very broken seas. The weather can 'blow-up' within an hour - I remember when we were on the South side of Anglesey, having ice-creams at Trearddur Bay, beautiful calm day, we headed about 5 miles offshore and turned to the North and hit 20 foot high waves, there was no way to stay on the plane so we 'dropped off' and slowly crept along at about 3-5knts and headed into Holyhead. Another time we were coming back from the IoM and the weather changed about half-way back , the waves were breaking over the fly-bridge, a most uncomfortable trip back. We were fortunate that having a fast boat (both Ireland and IoM were about 60 miles from our mooring and we could do either of them in 3 hours) we could 'get home' or to a safe-haven if the forecast turned bad, but if it happened suddenly you had to just do what you could. No way would I take a squashed sewer tube out to sea.

The services used to operate a Landing Craft Logistic (LCT) between North Uist and St Kilda, which is 52 nautical miles NW of Stornoway heading out to Iceland. An LCT is a flat-bottomed boat, i believe around 200 tons. The cruise takes around 8 hours. they use an LCT because the ship has to beach land, no jetty on the Island. On many occasions the seas are too high which means the LCT can beach and has to either standoff, so this is a flat bottom boat, in the Irish Sea, in storms, or return to Uist, You'd think that having jettisoned the contents of gut on outbound trip the return trip couldn't really get any worse, you would, in fact, be so very wrong, stuff of nightmares. So to conclude, based on my previous experience, would I take my NB on a journey on lumpy waters, not all the time I have a hole in my arse.

I came down the tidal Trent on one occasion on a 40' nb when it was well in flood with apparently 13' of "fresh", the waves were bouncing off my windows and every other wave the prop was spinning out the water, took 15 hours to get from Keadby to Cromwell .... never again! Personally i think anyone who does this by choice definitely needs to take more tablets! Rick

Rooted is when you are fed up the thing don't work, so dig a hole in the garden and bury it amongst the roots. Typically it allows access to the phones operating system that the manufacturers don't want you to access.Not recommended as it can brick the phone. Not tried e-robot before, but have used the less intuitive Tasker app. ETA.Are you trying to send the e-mail through wifi or phones credit?

My feeling is that the protection of the aquatic environment is what is important here. CRT can do what they want, when and how they want, but if it were me there now, it would be a question of how to pump out the engine bay to avoid a nasty pollution event on our canals.

While it is commendable to suggest what can be done to help this boat, there is a bit of me which is saying why? The owner obviously doesn't care much about fellow boaters or C &RT when they don't licence their boat and leave it tied up on a lock landing. OK stopping it sinking will prevent polluting the canal and that is perhaps the only reason I would do anything to help. haggis

It is very good, we are lucky here to have extensive oak, hornbeam and sweet chestnut woodland, much of it actively coppiced. Somewhere in my bookshelves I thought there was a Forestry Commission publication with a list of hardwoods and their calorific values, but I cannot find it . As far as I can remember, hornbeam came out top, with oak just below it. I thought it would be in my “Silviculture of broadleaf woodlands” FC bulletin number 62 book, but after much searching, can’t find it.

As you have local knowledge of this boat, can I suggest you contact Richard Parry directly and explain that CRT don't seem interested in averting an imminent pollution disaster. I'm sure he will kick some backsides into action. Please forward him your pictures. I've found that he will respond well if he knows what's going on. I can't see much of a problem for CRT to send someone to the location with a pump assuming it's not far from a bridge. It looks to me that it is rainwater so pumping out would probably keep it afloat for quite some time. I was offering advice based on the limited information provided - it's human nature to make assumptions. If you've managed so many years I'm amazed it's suddenly become an issue but hey ho. Enjoy your cruising I'm deeply envious as I had to give up cc'ing because of serious health problems - all I can do now is try to offer advice based on my experience - advice which is always well intentioned. I think I may give up on that - it's a sodding minefield! PS don't make assumptions on the people offering advice- they may be kind, genuine people just trying to help

The highlight would be my main concern since there have been a few occasions during the winter when I've moored here and it has been full, other boats have gone past clearly looking for somewhere to moor whilst this boat has hogged a visitor mooring for nearly 5 months now. Whatever the reason for it's abandonment, there is no reason I can think of why they have had to take up a prime mooring. On the way into Nantwich from Barbridge there are a couple of boats moored on the towpath, out of anyone's way, that have also been there since I have been in the area, they are causing no-one any real bother, I don't understand why this boat hasn't been left in a similar location (if they must abandon it) selfishly hogging a VM is an issue for everyone wanting to moor. As I put on the OP the location is the perfect site for a boater with mobility problems since it is right alongside the slope down to the town.

Yep, that's the right question. If the answer is "yes, he will get 4 years" he still shouldn't do it in my view! Maybe if 5 years is on the cards it starts to be worth a punt, but at break even longevity it just ain't worth it. This is because it isn't really any more difficult to quickly ruin a set of more expensive batteries due to an imperfect charging routine. If that happens after 18 months he'll be much more out of pocket than with the cheapos.

I've just realized I never posted a picture of the finished little boat so here it is. It came in at 15kg which should mean I can get it on and off the roof with ease. I've not sailed it yet but it paddles ok and seems relatively stable. I'll wait until the weather warms up a bit before give it another go. Meanwhile my time is being taken up by this. A Tideway 12 I saw it on ebay and couldn't resist.

Idiots have thrown stuff in the cut since forever. Would money on yet another instrument to tell us what we all know be money well spent? The boat and staffing it on its " cruise " would be a considerable cost that I personaly would rather see being spent elsewhere. My opinion of course but as my signature says
