  1. Before speculation goes any further and gets me into trouble I thought it time to make an announcement: On 07 October 2017 I entered an agreement with the owners of OTLEY, and all being well we are planning the handover of ownership to take place on 07 April 2018. My plan is to then bring OTLEY to the midlands for refurbishment work

  6. You fill your pump out tank from the outside? Do you have to erect a tent to maintain privacy?

  8. I have been delving into OTLEY's past for the past couple of months and I have a high resolution image of the one above where some of the lettering can clearly be seen, including OTLEY's fleet number, LANCING's registration number and the names of the butty's - but thanks for highlighting it. I think this is about 1957

  11. I hope you haven't paid too much for the butty - I'm not convinced it's a genuine one.

  19. It seems to me that almost every post that asks a question or describes an anomaly in canal custom or tradition results in "how it is on the K&A" and it always sounds worse .... arse about face .... unfriendly ...... counter intuitive. I've never cruised it, but honestly I feel quite put off by the thought of it.

  20. In which case I'd follow what the Tracer manual requires, failing that do as outlined in post #11 in this topic: So nearest cable size would be 16mm2 between batts and controller for up to 40A of charge current. Then 4mm2 or 6mm2 solar panel cable between panels and controller, use the latter if using lots of panels in parallel. Sure the 16mm2 will be total overkill with a 100w panel but would allow the solar array to be extended up to 500W+. On the above topic I forgot to mention to add a suitable fuse in the controller positive cable at the battery end, the Tracer manual should cover this, or I'd go a size up on what the controller output is or what the cable can handle, so a 50A fuse for a 40A controller with 16mm2 cable. A midi fuse and holder will do and can take the ring terminals needed for 16mm2 cable.

  21. So you have a 100w panel charging a start battery with a 40A Tracer MPPT? Seems the controller is a little oversized...

  24. Interesting thought but one I disagree with. I have spent most of my life working for, and promoting railfreight and yet I am an avid reader of all things connected with road haulage. Understanding your opponent is half the battle. George

  33. Yep. Heres some more. A few years back we moored for some beer at Goring and peeked in the local estate agents window. Amongst the adverts were a couple of houses described as " Attached " It took a few seconds for the penny to drop but these plonkers were advertising " Semis " as known throughout the country but suppose Attached to them sounded better. We used to have Housing estates......we now have " Developments " Of course if you don't want gluten free bread and are not " Vegan " then also you have it all wrong. Whats your allergy Today?

  35. If you can do all the work and repairs etc and live on the fringes of compliance with all the rules and regs you will be fine. If you slavishly follow every notice, rule, and bylaw and expect marina conveniences and to be able to have all the mod cons of a suburban house then you will struggle. 'Twas ever so. Personally I could not manage without a shed. Oh and somewhere to park. And just look at all that mud. And the b****** telly won't work. Batteries flat again. *Sigh* getting old.

  36. If you've got a sort of inspection hatch, would it be possible to pack the space with slab insulation? It's rigid enough for the large areas and can be torn into small pieces which you might be able to stuff into any remaining voids. I have certainly used this method to fill nooks and crannies when lining out my boats.

  43. Lots of people have generators. They can be antisocial but only if used inconsiderately. Many are no worse, or better, than running a noisy poorly silenced engine. Give the guy a break!

  48. I produced this based on original work by Peter Clarkson and Steve Pipe published on Facebook for my own use but I cannot see any reason why it can't be shared. It brings together the installation and calibration process for the basic functions i.e. voltage, current and power measurement (under/over protection and external relay functionality has been ignored). I have omitted to state that the display can be set to power off automatically after 10-60 seconds using the SET function on the display as the default is permanently on. For obvious reasons, I do not accept any liability for any installation issues caused by using the device or any installations not performed by myself.
