  4. Have you got a mooring OK? Are any of said boats hassling you? Why are you bothered by what other boats are or are not doing? Just steer your boat, enjoy your time, mind your own business... ;0)

  6. It demonstrates a particularly nasty version of "I don't care" when somebody cannot see the benefits of advising those who might be unaware of a hazard.

  8. Far far better for cyclists to use roads that they are designed for and leave towpaths for walking on that way cyclists dont fall in the water trying to get past people on the path.

  11. Or there is still an air lock in the calorifer coil, is it higher then the engine, is there ant warmth going along the pipes to it. You may have to crack a union to bleed it, I put a vent on mine.

  14. I don't have a composting bog. However, as the only Shit Disposal Operative on our boat I can say that I would happily take a cassette (or other container) to the elsan a couple of times a day if all it contained was the yellow stuff. It's the lumpy stuff that makes the job disgusting, especially so when it causes splashback. I'd happily have a composter to avoid that but, unfortunately, the boss, she say no.

  16. When my boat was new, 30 years ago, it was fitted with Aquadrive. Had it not been installed, I would never have considered it for the cost, which was then about the same as you quoted, though it may have included VAT. If I were to commission another craft, Aquadrive would be top of my list. In the interim, I have repacked the stern gland twice, and the transmission of vibration to the shell is negligible. Even with a plummer block, you can still get misalignment at the shaft to a small extent, creating wear. You will probably need to invest in a new set of engine mounts, such as R & D, to achieve full benefit. Do you have sufficient length between gearbox and propshaft to accommodate the Aquadrive?

  18. I like that the sound is kept with the boat and/or the choice to overlay with well chosen music... I watch a lot of drone footage and even had a fair few goes with a friends DJI. It's not easy to make it look good and I have to say hats off to Mike for doing it as no one else's video work on the narrowboat scene is coming close to how good this looks and sounds. I admit I'm a fan of his You Tube work and luckily for me met him briefly at Alvecote via my friends (who were moored just outside the Sam Barlow during all the REALLY LOUD fun) he was extremely modest about what he does. I also got to see Victoria in real life for the first time. My wife referred to it as my 'girly moment' His latest video is probably my new favourite. The fact that he was steering the boat and in control of the drone is impressive. The end with the wonderful sound of that JP winding down is a nice touch... Sorry Mike if you read this... I hope you don't mind me saying all this

  21. Update. Ed shipped the pulley so it was at the marina when we got back yesterday, along with a tool for holding the pulley for undoing. "Great!", I thought! In fact contrary to what I said earlier, the pulley is not on a spline, the spines part of the pulley is purely to take holding tool. In the centre of the alternator shaft is an 8mm hex socket. So I presumed this was a bolt and the way to go was to hold the pulley stationary with the splined too, and unscrew the bolt. Hmmm well after much bending of spanners and hammer-battering last night, that wasn't working! Grrrr! Ed mentioned that he would be nearby today so I texted him yesterday evening and he said he could come to the marina at 10:45 this morning, which he duly did, armed with an impact wrench. The pulley was thus impacted off in seconds and I could see that there was no bolt, the pulley simply screwed onto a thread on the alternator shaft. Apart from the fact that I had been shocking the wrong bit (alternator spindle instead of pulley), I'm fairly sure I was trying to turn it the wrong way. Doh! The new pulley, although a perfect fit on the shaft, is a slightly different length - but Ed had sent me some shims which we packed between pulley and alternator so as to position the belt bit in exactly the same place. Ed left at that point, having asked for a pittance for his time (I gave him double, which was still cheap). I walked to Toolstation to get a steel rule to check alignment of the pulleys. This can be adjusted by loosening the bolt holding the alternator bracket. I've stopped for lunch but I can see that there is a slight angular misalignment which will be worth correcting to maximise belt life - obviously it's always been like that. In terms of fore/aft alignment, Ed's shims have made it pretty much perfect. So I learnt about Iskra alternator pulleys today. Like so much stuff, easy to misunderstand how it goes together when it's together, bleedin' obvious when it's apart! And absolutely full marks for Ed Shiers, a very knowledgable, competent, helpful, pleasant, reliable and reasonably-priced chap. You don't find many of them!

  29. You don't have to respond to my queries [of which there have been very few on specific boats for sale]. There are 600 or so nb s on Appollo Duck, but at this moment in time, I am interested in this one, which has certain unique features, not encountered before, traps for the unwary perhaps. Specifically : is the broker sober, truthfull and honest? Specifically: is the builder reputable. Specifically: is it big enough for one liveaboard. I would add solar, upgrade the bathroom, the floor covering and the bedroom, budget £2K to £2.5K I have sent an emissary.

  30. Yes but what exactly is your point. We've agreed some people never do anything right. So............. What..............? Conclusion.............? This thread is set to run and run. Keeps everyone happy, the composters get to promote their wares, they are happy, the usual shit stirrers get to whinge, whine and be negative, they are happy too! The mods should be on overtime monitoring this thread, time and a turd.

  32. Yes. But don't forget to add in the (approx.) £1000 for the installation kit, + the cost of lifting the boat out (to drill holes thru the hull) an the cost of labour / installation. A competent DIYer could do it, but you need to connect new pipes into your diesel tank & run fuel pipes from your tank to the generator, drill holes thru the hull (below the water line for any water cooled models), & wire 220v cabling into your existing system / RCD / Fusebox The (small) Paguro may cost around £4000 but you will find that the 'installed price' will be nearer £6000. As I mentioned in another thread, the Paguro are OK but not the best, Try "Fischer Panda" in your search. The base generators are about £1000 more expensive (fitting costs similar) but they are a better option. https://www.fischerpanda.co.uk/marine_ac_generators_home.html The 'cheaper' marine generators are running at 3000rpm - in an ideal world you would want to purchase on of the 'very quiet' ones that run at 1500rpm but in the real world (unless you can find a second hand one) weight, size and COST will generally rule them out.

  41. A sad day for all. It was probably the Jam Ole Run in 2004 that I first met him, and caught up with him now and again as I could. You could alway tell his passion for the canals, and enjoyed telling stories and techniques about how it was. Glad to have met the man, and boated with him too. Here is a video I did from 2006 of him and Fabian Hiscock giving a group an experience on the Narrowboat Trust pair: May your memory live on. Rest in peace David. Mike

  42. One of my favourite memories of David, when I barely knew him. It was at the 'Village at War' in Stoke Bruerne. I was emerging from the back cabin of Sickle, in my overalls, with a flowery pinny, and a scarf wrapped around my head in turban style. David was passing in his 'Ministry' uniform, as seen in the picture above with Ron Withey. He was carrying a leather document wallet. He marched up to me, showed me his 'official Ministry pass' and asked me, "Madam, are you pregnant?" I was somewhat taken aback, not entirely surprisingly. He continued, "the Ministry is extremely concerned with the number of days that are being lost to trade when boats are tied up while women give birth, we are surveying families to assess the problem". I assured him that, as far as I was aware, I was not pregnant, and therefore there was unlikely to be a disruption to our trade.
