  1. So when you are drawing lots of fuel the engine dies but will start again if rested for a while. This is the classic symptom of a blocked breather on the fuel tank. Try it with the fuel filler off but protect the hole from the rain. If that makes no difference then I would agree with Wotever, time to change the filters. This will involve bleeding the engine except some engines are self bleeding. Once the filter(s) are changed empty them, possibly cut them apart so you can see what they have caught to get early earning of bug/water problems. Note that a good installation will have more than just the main filter on the engine. There should be at least one more filter like thing between tank and engine. If this is an older British engine like a BMC, Lister or Perkins there is likely to be a strainer gauze under the domed cap on the fuel lift pump. This needs checking as well. If there is still not improvement then you are looking at potential air leaks into the fuel lines or a blockage at the fuel tank outlet. If you have the skills and parts try rigging a small tank to feed the lift pump directly. That will rule out the tank, pipes and filters. What engine? I may be able to visit this afternoon or on Saturday, ring 01189874285. Do you have any tools aboard? I assume that you are by the Cunning Man or tied to a sign below the bridge.

  2. I keep getting notifications that " so and so has given you reputation" - can someone please advise what this means? Myself and another contributor asked for this reputation malarkey to be explained on a different posting, but nothing has appeared as yet. Does it have negative connotations? Am I (or anyone else that gets it) contravening some rules? Please advise so I can mend my ways

  6. I have candles on my boat . Why ? Because i like them - i find them relaxing , they provide enough light to " chill out " to whilst listening to Pink Floyd . Theyre just much nicer than an LED bulb . I always grin whenever i read of this or that being dangerous . The person who cannot use a candle without setting fire to themselves really shouldn t be allowed to use a knife & fork for eating thier dinner with or be allowed to tie thier shoe laces up . Candles are not dangerous . People are dangerous . There are also alot of idiots about despite the fact that many folk have some piece of paper called a degree or anothe qualification that would suggest that infact theyre actually quite bright . If i walk down any high st i guarantee some twat will be walking along reading thier mobile fone , walking across road staring at facebook or some other tosh . This clearly means that mobile phones are dangerous as they divert otherwise intelligent peoples attention . Nonsense of course . Fones arent dangerous & neither are candles . People are dangerous & often thick as shite aswell . I sometimes wonder whether such notions of killer candles is part of modern britains " someone else is always to blame mentality " . " i cant possibly be a fxxxxing idiot - the fault lies with xyz " Big candles , wide base , secure , away from curtains , light with a match , enjoy & ensure its put out at the end of the night . It ain t rocket science is it Unless you re tool of course !

  7. I have a Lister JP3 bare engine block in Derby, destined for my boat in Braunston, for the rebuild of a frost cracked engine i have, would any owners of working boats or boats with the capacity to load 150 kg of cast iron that are planning on boating south be interested in moving it by water ? It could be picked up from Langley Mill boat yard. I will pay you my pallet courier cost £60 , and no time limit, as i wont need it for a long while. Any takers for this little project ?

  8. Since the new software came in, every 2nd update is either a new photo showing mainly non - canal photographs with white plastic boats in the, and now, the same photos with someone, mainly NaughtyCal commenting on them. Is it just me?? How do I stop this tipper ware parade.

  10. The firm was called Kingfisher Line. Not sure if John Rice was trading as a sole proprietor or as a limited company. Steel was 1/4" bottom, 3/8" side, 1/4" superstructure. Here are a couple of 1981 photos. It's basically all still there, so yes I'd say it was pretty well built. We did find a small hole behind a rubbing strake when they were refitted last year,

  11. Our boat was built at Hoo Mill lock in 1979, by J E Rice. The bows look completely different. I have a vague recollection that his father used to be in the business.

  15. In this case they are not looking for silly sums of money, it looks just enough to make the next couple of weeks better, they were only asking £500 and that has been topped, A bit like having a whip round for a mat when you are at work.

My newly bought Narrowboat built by A.Rice in 1969 i collect her in a weeks time me and the wife can't wait she will be restored to her former glory by me and the wife to as authentic as possible NO modern Ikea MFI etc etc going on this beautiful Lady! It's just a shame the original Perkins engine was replaced for a 2.5 Transit engine but i am told it's a Banana engine that is bomb proof so not to grumble i suppose the original name of "Ngombe Shenzi" was also changed to "Moon Dust" which i can't complain about and is very apt i think being built in 1969 when a certain two people walked on that big silver thing in the sky

  20. We have just taken out insurance for our about-to-be new boat. It is initially insured as 'continuous cruising' as we will not be taking the boat directly to a marina but using it over the next few months to progress from marina to marina (semi CC?). This was discussed openly with the insurer who opted to describe it as it is on the policy. However, we cannot leave it unattended towpath-side for more than 24 hours without supervision. Did not discuss car as they do not insure it. But we have clarified the situation regarding our house when we are on the boat and how long we may be away without returning home. If we were fully CC then it would be necessary to discuss openly with a broker but I can understand that it might be complicated not least because most car insurers would not have the necessary tick boxes. Perhaps try an insurer that does both boats and cars? It never helps to try to fool an insurer - they will not check it out up front but only when a claim is made, at which time it is too late to change the declaration. All of the conversations I had with insurers/brokers included stern warning that it was my responsibility to make sure that I had answered the questions truthfully and accurately and that the insurance would be invalid if subsequently it proved not to be the case. The biggest problem lies with matters that are not asked specifically but might come up under a catch-all question along the lines of Is there anything else material to this policy which you want to tell us? What might be material? When in doubt, ask. It is pointless handing over large premiums for a worthless policy. One thing to watch is if you disclose matters which then lead them to say that you do not fit their criteria, make sure that the words 'decline to insure' do not enter the conversation or if they try to use them, get them to correct it. Otherwise you will have trouble next time you ask for a quote which will almost always ask if you have ever had your insurance declined.

  21. Surely the 'man on the Clapham Omnibus' would take 'normally' to represent the MAJORITY of the time - it would be unlikely (I would suggest) that a CCer would have there car in anyone place for more than a few days. No doubt the NBTA K&A club will now use that as an excuse not to move : "we cannot get our cars insured if we move, &, we need our cars to take the children to school"

I have been with Direct Line for years with no issues, even when they were investigating a suspicious collision I was involved in (partly resulting in a west midlands major insurance scam being uncovered). They are fully aware I work all over the country and the car could be anywhere overnight.

  27. I use 3/4" (19mm) for pumped shower waste and the same for washing machine, but inch and a half for gravity drained sinks. I used to use 3/4" and they used to get blocked. Bigger waste pipes and fittings don't get blocked with detritus and are much easier to clean out.

  38. no it's not. ........................ and sales turnover does not equate to gross income. Gross income is the amount by which sales revenue exceeds production costs (cost of sales). In this case it could be zero. would I employ you as a consultant at 5%? - no way. would I employ you as a consultant FOC? - no way. try Dragons' Den, you might get lucky - NOT !!

I can't tell you how many times I read "See post 128" and just left the thread because I had no simple way of knowing which post that was. It's much quicker and more straightforward for everyone now to paste a link directly to the post in question like this:

  44. Trillian, I DO understand. I thought, "wait, let him do it, just because it's on his timescale, doesn't matter, if he says he will, then I'm sure he will". Then the BSS man came and recoiled when he looked inside the oven (I won't tell you what he found ) so I realised that maybe I needed to go down with an armoury of cleaning materials and a vacuum. (I have just spent 5 days dismantling and re-assembling my new vacuum, which will never be the same again!

  45. Then you are not using the correct ties. Natural (White) Nylon 66 ties will last around 2-3 years in sunlight Black Nylon 66 ties will last 5years + in sunlight Weather resistant grade (which incorporates 2% of Carbon Black, by weight) will give you 10 years+ The brittleness normally found after a short time of installation (either indoor or outdoor) is primarily down to lack of moisture. Nylon 66 cables ties need around 2% by weight of water content, if they 'dry-out' they become very brittle. If you have a bag of open ties that have gone brittle (rattle when you shake the bag) then put them in a pan of boiling water for 5 minutes and they will be as good as new. You could use Nylon 11 or Nylon 12 as these are non-hydroscopic BUT (and its is a big BUT) they burn like buggery. Lloyds shipbuilding specifications state that 1-in-3 fixings must be stainless steel. In the enquiry after the sinking of HMS Sheffield (Falklands war) it was found that the majority of those that had died , died as they could not exit the boat due to gangways being blocked by fallen cables that had dropped off the cable racking due to the use of plastic cable ties. We had to do a huge amount of development work to produce steel ties that were strong enough to withstand an exocet missile explosion (G-Forces were phenomenal and it was interesting watching the tests. Submarines only use plastic cable ties for temporary cable fixing, once all of the cables are run, they are lashed with stainless steel strapping and the plastic ties removed.

  46. We use candles all the time, big fat heavy things that give out a nice light and also just a bit of heat. The worst thing that has ever happened is that the dog singed its tail and it smelt horrid and we had to give it a biscuit. We have never had a candle fall over even when unlit and travelling and bouncing off walls. bridges, trees. other boats and being tossed around by the wash of 1000 ton boats on the Dutch bit of the Rhine. The biggest fire hazard nowadays is owners who have no idea how their boat is put together and lack the confidence and experience to do any work because of the fear of infringing some sort of BSS regulation. Consequently whenever they fiddle with something they are at risk of doing something daft. Hrumph. Sorry, woken up a bit grumpy this morning.
