  1. Can we also add that the police are aware of all the details of our dispute. We have been honest with all, absolutely no repossession

  4. Yes everyone should be allowed to go at their own pace. But that is not same as saying everyone must go as slowly as the slowest boat. I'm sure he did appreciate us being around but so does anyone who wants something from someone else. Banning was my second go at it. The first one was public execution.

  5. To identify them. It's historical I'm changing our boats name to 1000111010010001011100 Richard

  9. Where did you get that idea from? My observations suggest NBs are priced according the the seller's inflated idea of what the boat is actually worth now. (Usually based on what they paid for it when it was ten years younger!)

  11. Well that's because you're asking the wrong question. Try asking about batteries. We like battery questions. The answer is always "they are goosed, you haven't been charging them enough!". Easy!!!

  13. You are very clever too LM, and you're also extremely good at explaining the inns and outs of your own (and of the many people you know) expériences with boat life. This certainly is a great help for newbies that are ready to jump in the deep without knowing how to stay afloat, and may save them from making stupid décisions. They may still make these stupid décisions, but then it's their own fault as they have been warned and been informed by your often very detailed stories. Peter.

  15. Hi all We are at Fradley and are having some interesting pointers. Posters are going up and Woodend lock keeper when on duty writes down the numbers of the boats, she is contacting us this evening. With regard to any possible repossession, we paid for the boat completely and We can reassure all that this is not the case. However, it is likely we spoke to someone and did actually say we come back and forwards to Essex to our boat and we're heading back to Mercia now, loose talk perhaps, but in our wildest dreams we did not expect this to happen.

  16. I have a studio on my boat. I bought an ex-hire boat that had two toilets. One bathroom I kept as is, but the second WC I had removed from its cabin but left the sink in. I knocked through this little WC cabin into the next cabin to make a studio with a sink for my paint brushes. The boat has 13 very large windows so there's loads of light and the glass can be lifted out entirely to get a good air flow in summer. My studio has two folding desk surfaces that drop down out the way when not in use and one large curved one that's permanent. I built these myself to fit my needs and the shape of the space. I run a laptop, tablet and printer in there from a 12v socket and a portable 350w inverter for the printer. I don't use all-singing-all-dancing Macs in my work though. My only advice is to source a clean form of heating for the studio. My main heating is a multi fuel stove but it produces a lot of fine ash which settles on everything. That's at one end of the boat. The studio is near the other end so in there I installed a diesel fuelled Taylor's heater so there's no ash or dust settling on wet paint or clean work.

  17. Sounds like it needs servicing. The gas jet, burner and flue cleaning. This generally needs doing every couple of years.

  18. He knew the pontoon???!!!! This is beginning to look more like a 'take back' by the builder or finance company than a theft. How on earth would he know in advance which pontoon it was moored on, one wonders... Repossession is rarely announced in advance. That would be counterproductive. I would expect the owners to have been written to after the event though.

  19. This raises an interesting point. How did he ask where the boat was moored, given the boat has no name? How did he describe it? Did he quote the CRT number? Name the builder? State the colour and age? Or what?

  20. Fortunately I've been researching living on a boat for 5 or so years and have had conversations with crt and many boaters so I know what were doing the question was regarding benefits and would my wife still be able to claim them colin

  24. Have to say I'm inclined to agree. If I was single handing up a flight where all the locks were set in my favour, I wouldn't want to risk letting a boat past either. I've let too many faster boats past me only to find they twonk about at locks ahead and hold me up big time. Grrrr....

  25. Surely the boat behind would go faster if he allowed it to catch up and then pulled in to let them pass. I am afraid I wouldn't feel very friendly if I found all gates left open against me. But I suppose I am just a miserable old so and so.

  26. I think some people shout at hire boats as a matter of course no matter what speed they are doing.

  28. This discussion is an interesting take not only on the way people boat but also their attitudes to others. For myself, if I want to do a flight quickly, Audlem two weeks ago for instance, I started at 5 pm and was at the top with most locks against me by 6.45. Pretty efficient and that's how I like to be. Middlewich the day before I racked up at 2.30 in a queue of 5 and it took 3 hours to do 5 locks, most of those spent helping a mixture of hire boat novices and experienced boaters. I enjoyed both just as much and no-one bothered me going slowly or holding me up. To the gentleman who started with a moan, I suggest that either do the busy flights at slack times or just enjoy the relaxation and the people you meet. It seems like your partner does most of the work either way so it appears you are someone who enjoys a moan about other people.

  29. It's simply because working locks efficiently and expeditiously is rewarding, just as doing anything else optimally is rewarding. Put it another way, why do things inefficiently when you can do them efficiently? You may think you are taking the "lazy" option by just bimbling around but actually you'll be expending more energy to get up the flight than us, albeit spread over a longer period perhaps. Timing the flight transit time is a way to monitor efficiency and generate reward. But locks are certainly not viewed as an obstacle, rather as a means to hone our technique and generate a sense of achievement. There is nothing wrong with having no aims in life, no schedule, no competition etc but that's not for everyone including us.

  30. The appeal is already on there and members are aware and looking. Some of the members are on long cruises in the area and if they still had access here it may have helped with the search a bit more. Not wanting to open or debate this on here just saying maybe this post could be made available to members and non members, whether banned or not, as it is such an important thing for all boat owners.

  31. Personally I have found just as many private boat speeders as hire boat speeders. At least when you hire a boat you get some instruction, not so if you go out and buy a boat.

  32. Surely no more selfish than bullying people into going at the speed you would prefer them to go at rather than letting them past?

  33. There is an alternative! The slower boat does the decent thing and allows the faster to over take.

  34. David is right, I regret what i wrote and yes it was too much wine. I apologise to both of you, David and nyima77). I'll edit out my posts if you wish. I haven't done it immediately as it might leave some of the later comments seeming incomprehensible.

  35. Yes she used approx 20L an hour using an industrial oil burner boiler, so use to steam for about 10 hours a day, the boiler was a 600 lbs/hr boiler and just about kept up with the engine requirements, so was burning most of the time, she had a 1250L desiel tank up front with a 2000L water tank up front as well, when both were full she was a bit bow heavy. When I brought her she was laid up in Thorne, near Doncaster, brought her down to Harefield and used 2300L of fuel but it was only 33p/L then. When I used to go to the Rickmansworth festerval worked it out at approx 7-8 galls to the mile, a bit thirsty, BUT great fun.

  36. I was on my mooring a couple of years ago and three brave 18/19/20 year olds demanded to come on my boat,so I told them to go away. Threats ensued from them, but when I stood up they realised I was bigger than they first thought, so they retreated, still yelling threats - one of which was that they would throw me in the canal. I was planning on going home shortly after this, and was concerned about them returning and damaging the boat, so I called the police to get it on record. Because they threatened to throw me in the canal, the police were there within ten minutes and took all the details, then went off after the idiots. I guess the moral is, don't overreact, and call the old bill. However, if physically attacked, I only know one response - violent reaction. If I'm going down, someone else is going with me.

  37. In a fair world the youths would be charged and locked up for as long as it takes to make them realise their wrong doings. Our country is being ruined by these type of people who have no morals. I hate that nasty types like these are allowed to continue in there evil ways.

  38. As an owner who has unfortunately lost several dogs, we give retired greyhounds a homes, which tends to mean when we get them they can be quite old. I've always found the following to be a spur to getting another (never a replacement though). A Dog's Last Will & Testament Before humans die, they write their last will and testament, giving their home and all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I’d ask… To a poor and lonely stray, I’d give my happy home; my bowl and cozy bed, soft pillow and all my toys; the lap, which I loved so much; the hand that stroked my fur; and the sweet voice that spoke my name. I’d will to the sad, scared, shelter dog the place I had in my human’s loving heart, of which there seemed no bounds. So, when I die, please do not say, “I will never have a pet again, for the loss and the pain is more than I can stand.” Instead, go find an unloved dog, one whose life has held no joy or hope, and give my place to him. This is the only thing I can give… The love I left behind. – Author Unknown
