  1. It's not the loss of property that affects most burglary victims. Unless sentimental, it can be replaced Its that some feel really violated and unsafe in their own houses/boats following a break in. There's also the worry that you are more likely to be targeted a second time.

  15. One does one's best, GL. So, when did you finally get your boat? You have been quiet for a wee while, I don't think you had got it last time I saw your posts on CWF.

  19. Reasonably modern Beta 43s have 2 alternators by default, a small one for the engine battery and a large one (150 to 175A) for the domestic batteries. Thus they are pretty good at charging batteries or even running a high load device such as washing machine via the inverter. What sort of inverter / power rating does the boat have? It is theoretically possible to retrofit a Travelpower but it is not easy and quite costly. My suggestion is that if you have a decent inverter and a modern Beta 43 with bi alternator then a Travelpower, whilst certainly being a "nice to have", is not a vital accessory.

  20. I think it's a bit down to the individual's attitude. It really doesn't need to be so traumatic, nasty though it is. I've had my boat broken into, the guy slept on it and traipsed mud and sheep crap (you couldn't avoid the sheep crap in the field) over everything, so the carpets got binned and most of the bedding. He didn't do much damage getting in and didn't steal anything off the boat. To be honest, I couldn't begrudge him a night's shelter (snowy winter), having spent a few nights on the street myself when younger. I've had my house burgled a couple of times, a few things nicked, again, luckily with no great loss or damage done. I can't say I ever felt violated and have never really understood why people say they do (though I'm sure it's true). After all, a house/boat/whatever is just a thing, it isn't you, neither are the things they take. Rape is a violation, burglary isn't. Which is not to say that people don't feel that way, and I sympathise if they do. I'm not downplaying anyone else's experience, but personally I don't understand it.

  21. If you have not been burgled or robbed you will not know how what it is like. I can assure your life will feel ruined. No matter how trivial the financial loss, you feel violated. You don't get over it. You just about learn to cope. Our boat was broken into (years ago but the bad feeling lingers) - it was lived on for a few days. The toe-rag was not content just to steal food and minor value items you don't miss until you come to use them (binoculars, torch, calculator, compass and hand tools....etc) but made worse by pouring ketchup and salad cream over the bedding. We took it off and burnt it. You feel bad. You wish evil on them. It is a traumatic experience. Interestingly the police have really taken the effect on victims into serious account lately. Our house suffered an attempted break-in a short while ago. The burglar did not get in. But the police forensic team descended in force to collect evidence, and also the social team to give victim support, at the time and with a follow-up to check how you are coping. They certainly appreciate people feel their lives have been ruined - that's the true perspective.

  22. Both Severners I reckon, regarding the small dock Laurence mentions, to my knowledge this was run by Tom Pearsall, until recently there was an old workbench at my old house at Pelsall Stop, made from boat bottoms off this dock, Mr. Pearsall's main activitywas breaking worn out boats

  25. another one to try is Richard Milligan (Marine Engineering Co) on 07973 826260. He has rebuilt/repaired a couple of RN's on Stowe Hill boats that I know of. Sounds like a fuel pump or governor issue to me too(from experience)

  28. I have been involved in the offshore oil & gas industry for well over 30 years tunnel thrusters are used far more aggressively and for longer continuous periods than on narrowboats, yet have not heard or seen this occurring, I would imagine that there are rare instances of it, but certainly not to the extent that the industry or classification societies are unduly concerned about it.

  34. It's perfectly normal practice if you want to contact a boater, to ask anyone who knows them to deliver a message with your contact details asking them to call you. Control remains with the sought boater. The seeker doesn't even have to be told that the message was delivered (or not).

  35. Its not often I get nervous on the boat but since lost my dog i do sometimes but i don't think I would have 2 GSD's ..thats a lot of dog in a boat!..One would be fine. I may replace Molly but not yet, the pain still raw..Im not sure another could tick the boxes she did. I don't even know what breed id go for..guess time not right. When Im out in the boat I always moor near other boats but not right on top of them..give them their privacy. I dont moor anywhere that doesn't feel right.

  36. If they are not painted on the inside and outside/inside the boat, they will rust, and galvanic protection is a must too.

  48. It just isn't fair, is it. You do your best to follow the rules but just forget to licence your boat for a few years and then the cursed authority keeps picking on you. Can't imagine why. You have my sympathy and that of everyone on here who has paid their dues every year.

  49. Quite glad I'm off on the boat with no internet in a week or two so I don't have to read any more whinging about CRT breaking the law by people who happily admit to deliberately breaking the accepted rules themselves. And then complaining they get charged for it. Thank gods most of us get boats because we like them, use them with consideration for others and so generally enjoy our lives with very little grief.
