  1. Try parking a motorhome on a National Trust Car Park and see how long they let you stay there. CaRT are too reasonable sometimes.

  2. Oh come on blackrose! ... you know perfectly what she meant. Are you being serious or just trying to start a row? I seem to remember you grumbled once about politically correct speech and how we have become so pedantic about certain phrases that we now no longer can say how we think for fear of causing offence. It has indeed come to such a sorry state as that, perfectly ordinary statements are twisted by zealots who almost seem to deliberately seek such verbal ambiguity and then pounce to berate and condemn.

  3. What a load of fuss about a piece of paper. Stick it in the window. If you need to it's done. If not required no harm done. Get on with life.

  4. You have to admire an organisation with Traveller in it's name which seems to want it's members to be allowed not to move

  5. All what problems? Good hull. Good stretch. Engine been checked over twice- all clear. Minor survey recommendations - £40 here £36 there (I thought that was to be expected) No absolute musts from the survey. Maybe you are confused because the post has become so long but my original title no longer really applies. However, I decided not to start a new thread as I thought this progression of boat buying might be helpful to someone someday. But I see its confused you- and forbidden you from updating your personal mind map of the situation. Sorry for your confusion. Also- not that it's that important a point- my hearts not really too involved- I'm really thinking things through and trying to make the best decision with the advice of the surveyor, engineer and my own common sense. At some point you have to weigh it all up.

  7. Wasn't it on the lakes that a woman and child died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a bodged internal generator installation? Perhaps sometimes education alone is not enough... Edited for spillung.

  11. Thanks Valrene. So much pedantry before for your very welcome sensible post. I have no intention of responding to the pedants, I'm just pleased to raise awareness of something that could genuinely help people who feel vulnerable. Twelve or thirteen people I know from Facebook have downloaded the app since I drew attention to it earlier today. So clearly it's seen as something helpful By all means continue the grammar assassination, gentlemen. Every comment bumps the topic back up and enables others to see my original post and the link to the app. It could save lives and certainly help potentially vulnerable people feel safer and their friends and families feel more reassured about their safety. That's the same with this app.

  12. I think you will find that people with electrical knowledge will be very reluctant to give you a "blue goes here, brown goes here" set of instructions. especially as it is very difficult to work out from your description.. 240v ac circuits are too dangerous to give simple advice apart from the obvious, if you don't know what you are doing then please don't do it. If you get it wrong it can kill

  13. Be all of the above as it may it's quite clear by now that you can do a fair few miles, have a home mooring, and still fall foul of ever changing (hence 'mysterious') rules. And those rules are applied differently in different parts of the country by people not always fully conversant with them, or happy to rule their own roost in their own way. The airing of personal politics doesn't change that. Nor does vilifying people as tossers. The Cut's a fractious place these days. Oh hang on - no it isn't. The virtual cut is a fractious place.

  15. Good for them. It is a pointless money making scheme anyway.

  16. It's easy to be flippant....... Even those of us who have boated for quite a while can't say we haven't had the odd close shave....I know I have....it's quite sobering how quickly things can go wrong and escalate. Please don't make fun of someone else's misfortune....,one day it might be you! Gareth

  17. I would not want to put a P2R onto raw water if I could put it on skin/keel cooling and use antifreeze. Raw water steadily and slowly dissolves the iron out of the cast iron, leaving behind a carbon matrix which looks fine, but has little strength. If your P2 has already been run in salt water as part of an earlier installation this will be well under way. If a skin tank is too difficult then a matrix or snake of 1 inch steel piping can be welded to the swim on one or both sides. This is usually easier than a skin tank. About 4 lengths is fine on a standard swim. Inch piping has a surprising surface area for its length. 36ft of pipe happily looks after my J2's cooling on canal work though it does need a bit more for rivers. The pipe does not seem to affect the handling and gets a pressure wash and a coat of black when the hull does. N

  18. Hi dpaws, I have no idea about your age, but the only useful thing to say that I can think of (which doesn't help your design of the ideal narrowboat) is : "Wouldn't it be much nicer to be exploring the canals now (or very soon) on a less than perfect boat but enjoying life on the water, instead of endless studies that will slow your chances down of ever being able to do so much more then neccesary by a long long time ? If I had to make that choice, the answer would be crystal clear, and without the need for endless calculations, with or without the help of computer programms. Good luck anyway. Peter.

  20. Hello, Yes, the problem resides mainly with the "Roles from home" checkbox. We've been going through the code and we think we have a fix that will work with the other specific ways the search has been defined to us. We should hopefully get this rolled out next week, based against the other priorities we currently have. Thank you for the feedback, it's genuinely useful to gain an insight into how different people use, and expect things to function. I will also send this thread to the National Volunteering Manager who is looking at the whole process of how we collect Volunteering opportunity information, and then how we search over it and present it back it to the people who are minded to help us. 21. I would make my feelings known about the people in the article….I cant bring myself to call them boaters as they don't seem to want to boat….but I think the thread would quickly locked and I would be sitting on the naughty step……... Cheers Gareth

  23. Please don't. We all have to learn throughout our whole lives. On occasions we are told information which we have no reason other than to believe it is correct. Unfortunately this is then passed on in good faith and to some extent becomes the norm. It is only when correction happens that we find out what is "right". I do not mind being corrected if I present inaccurate information, this is how we learn. What I do object to is if this correction is imparted in a belittling manner as if I am some sort of fool. I am many things but fool is not one of them.
