  3. [mod edit] I don't like some landlords and believe they are exploitative. [/mod edit] Edit, I didn't mean all landlords, most of which are probably ok. It was a response to the post above.

  4. Any of our more well off forum members got a spare £30k laying around? I was thinking of Mark99 after he posted a picture of his back garden the other day? There seems a huge opportunity for another Coal/Fuel boat in London at the moment as they are at least 2 boats down compared to last year. Almost daily there are posts on Facebook from people desperate for fuel/coal/gas. For the last 6 months I have been checking the back of my sofa and the returned coin slot of every vending machine I pass, but alas I can't find the money yet! I have the option of putting my own boat up for sale, but that wouldn't happen overnight and wouldn't happen quick enough I expect. Does anyone want to invest in the boat/buisness and I'll work it whilst gradually becoming a shareholder. When my own boat is sold I would then buy the remaining shares? :-p Gosty Hill is available and has been for sale for 3 years at least I think, so there must be a deal to be done on the asking price! I'm also trying to find out what the score is currently with Archemedies, anyone know? I realise this will be met with ridicule and piss taking, but as much as I am being light hearted, if someone does have £30k I'm ready to go!

  5. Geoff - I've been reading through your site. For much of it you have my sympathy and certainly the our legal process often leaves much to be desired. Those who can afford it, benefit from the system in ways far beyond the reach of you or I. However, there's a big but.... a lot of what you write indicates a sense of entitlement. An entitlement to live on a boat and an entitlement to cruise according to a pattern which suits your particular situation. This has never been the case on the canals, and never will be (I expect). Those of us who live on the canals, do so by ensuring that we stay within the rules, whether we agree with them or not. There are some who try to avoid this and often they come undone. There is no absolute entitlement to live on the canals for anyone. If I found myself unable to either access a mooring, or pay for a mooring or move around to a sufficient degree, then I'd be looking for a different lifestyle. I wouldn't be wanting to saddle myself with years of stress and legal wrangling just to try and prove a point. Life's to short! I'd have a re-think and start out on a new adventure. One which brought me happiness and contentment. Incidentally, I live on my boat. I have a home mooring. It's a leisure mooring. It's not unlawful since I also cruise extensively and I don't live permanently on my mooring. You could have easily done this years ago, except perhaps due to your illness. I am sympathetic for that but, the way I see it, you should have probably moved off your boat during the time you were ill and obtained a simple permanent towpath mooring during that time. If you were unable to afford that option, then that's an indication that you should probably have sold your boat. Boat ownership is not cheap. I regularly talk to people who would like to own a boat but simply can't afford all the costs which comes with it. That's just life! Should those people just get boats anyway and expect the system to provide for them?

  6. Star line Boats have a groupon offer for short hire over winter - West Midlands May be of interest to those wanting to dip their toes in the water, so to speak http://www.groupon.co.uk/deals/birmingham/starline-narrowboats-1/45446510?p=7&nlp=&utm_source=channel_occasions_merchandising-deals&utm_medium=email&sid=a5096b35-1b9c-48a0-a7f3-1e090cd191d4&division=birmingham&uh=968227f8-a9de-48a8-b064-9b67d90a8f63&date=20142009&sender=rm&s=body&c=link&d=deal-page

  15. I'm suggesting that nigh on 100% of transactions with surveyors are positive and useful to the client. I'm also suggesting that nigh on 100% of the 'nightmares' get onto the forum, gain legs and become The Truth Richard

  16. I have heard that said before and yet there are very many people who I consider to be excellent boatmen/women who have either not "been in" or took very many years before they did Alan Fincher for example. A similar thing is often heard among motorcyclists - you are not a true biker until you have been off. When I was learning to ride (age 40) I mentioned to my instructor that people had said this to me. His reply was to tell them to say it to him. He was a former police motorcyclist with 40 years experience and had never "been off" As the results of going in can be at best nasty and at worst life threatening I sincerely hope that it does not happen to any of us - and if it does it is the sort of dunking that we can laugh about afterwards. ETA I have been in once. not properly just up to the knees. We were travelling with a very new to boating forum member and it was pooring with rain. We got through a bit that can be tricky for the inexperienced - old stop lock just before a bridge on a bend and at the top of an embankment where the wind can blow a hoolie making steering impossible for anyone not confident enough to keep the power on into the narrow obstacle. The other boat failed to emerge, we waited and still it failed to emerge. Thinking that perhaps I could grab a rope or push the bow off to help if I went back Dave tried to get the boat into the side but it was very shallow and needed a leap to reach the towpath. The problem was the tuft of grass at the edge of the towpath was overhanging and so when my foot went onto it there was nothing below and in I went. No harm done, just squelchy boots and a bit of a bruise but I was hurt much more when we tied up a bit later and the newbie gave me a veritable tongue lashing about forcing him to move his boat in the pooring rain! (we hadn't - we had actually suggested it was a day to stay tucked up in the warm unless you HAD to move but he thought he HAD to move - he didn't!)

  21. For lagging 9mm or 13mm poly foam will do, much bigger won't save that much more, but not too close to the stove due to fire risk. The header tank, and its feed and vent pipes should stay cold so no need for insulation there. Reducing the speed of the pump or leaving out the antifreeze won't make any difference to the backboiler output. If the pump is bit annoying switching in and out, then running it at lower speed could be helpful. For a thermostat there's also the small non-adjustable normally open (N.O.) button thermostats for a few £, could have one switching the pump on low speed at around say 60°C and one switching full power at say 80°C: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_sop=15&_nkw=no+thermostat&rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=2 To slow the pump down, could use a resistor, even a 12V 8W to 20W filament bulb, or a cheap PWM controller might do OK: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_sop=15&_nkw=no+thermostat&rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=2 cheers, Pete. ~smpt~

  23. This means there are two water circuits. It is possible one circuit works fine, but the other one doesn't. I suspect you have air or an air lock in the engine circuit Richard
