  5. Dan's videos were one of the first we saw when researching buying a craft-brilliant. I can't help but think if there were more youngsters like him around the world would have a brighter future.

  6. I prefer rugs, they are warmer on the feet in winter.

  8. Quelle suprise! Although not really, as it's a nonexistent boat. She can sell it repeatedly and keep pocketing the £5ks. MtB

  10. Have you visited Lincon? Take your time stay on the boat overnight and give yourself time to know the engine, check water and oil (when were the fuel filters changed) Sample the bottom of the fuel tank to check for water and bugs in the fuel ( I use a wet vac and a thin pipe into a clear bottle). Fill the fuel tank. check fuses and alternator belts. Stay overnight in Torksey then in Newark treat it as a holiday and not a panic gallop. You will leave Torksey with the tide so look up the tide times. The Ripon boat club guide to theTrent and Ouse is a good guide. Have you good mooring ropes to use in the locks and windlases to operate the gate paddles. Buddy up with another boat when leaving Torksey. Have you had the boat surveyed???

  12. Not sure where to start now!! Maybe best place would be at the beginning. Back in 2012 a number of us voiced grave concerns about the power being given to the Waterways Partnerships unfortunately as it was the early days of the WP this fell mainly on deaf ears. In 2013 it became apparent that the South East Waterways Partnership was not fit for purpose it was a Partnership that was spending to much time looking at boating issues that were not in the original remit of the Partnerships. This became very clear during and after the SE Visitor Mooring Consultation the Partnership lacked boaters input. We then campaigned to get more boaters on the Partnership as it became apparent that it was dominated by 2 people John Best and Jeff Whyatt I personally (as did others) exchanged many heated emails with Best and Whyatt. Their solution was to set up a boaters sub group by doing this they missed completly the main points . First one being the Partnership needed more boaters and the second being it was not in their remit to be so active in boating issues, but by having a boaters sub group it actually increased their power to get involved in boating issues. I and others warned at the time that the sub group would be used as a rubber stamping group, I am tempted to say "I told you so" and I just have!! So having now read what has happened on the thread since I went to bed it would appear that another system to change Visitor Moorings has been introduced. Take the CEO out on a Hire Boat stop for a pint at the pub and between the 3 of you agree to change the moorings to 48 hours, to give it some credibility take it to the Boaters Sub Group knowing that maybe there will only be 1 or 2 decenting voices but with a few hire boat owners and others appointed by CRT it will go through. I go back to the question I have been asking for a long time "who runs our canals and for who's benefit?"

  15. Needless to say it's a wee bit different than doing 3mph on a canal. Make sure you get all the charts, know all about lighthouses and their differing light sequences, learn to use a compass, sextant, have plenty of underwear changes available but above all, take care to follow the mooring laws as attached photo will demonstrate.

  21. Oops, sorry, took so long to type the thread has moved on so ignore below, I'm talking rubbish. OR Try & maybe state your point as best you can without making it personal & having the the thread descending into a verbal Brawl. Otherwise, can you imagine if someone calls someone else 'Publicly' a name, then they retaliate with a sware cuss & an UN pleasant name, So not to be out done, & to retaliate still further the instigator steps up a notch and so on. Next you've got virtual lynch mobs forming, malicious criminal damage being done & or Boats being set alight. You know the sort of thing. Most of us know it's ok to be wrong or have a different point of view about things. But to publicly verbally abuse, or belittle someone for it, is imo not the best way to try & put your own point across as being any better.

  22. You also mentioned "Smoke" associated with running hot - Air cooled listers can get the cooling fins on the cylinders clogged with a "layer" of crud - a small amount of spilled/leaked oil or diesel running down the outside of the cylinder attracts dust/fibres etc and this will form a nice insulating layer promoting overheating. see http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=41636 springy

  23. The canvas "tube" isn't there as an air inlet, it's supposed to be there as an outlet for the hot air. As such there should be a large rectangular-shaped face across the whole side of the engine, and the duct to the vents in the side of the hull (or the roof) can be canvas, wood, plastic, or anything else - ours was made of aluminium and was just pop-riveted together. The big fan on the front of the engine, inside a wire cage, sucks cool air and blows it across the engine towards the ducting; if the mesh is blocked it won't work very well, and if there is no ducting the engine will definitely run very hot and will be prone to stalling when you throttle back. I expect someone here will advise you on the best size of prop for your engine. Crowthers are able to calculate the ideal prop for you, then make it and sell it to you. Their props are slightly more expensive than others but are definitely the best. Either way you will need to know the ratio of your gearbox &/or reduction gear - there should be labels telling you the details somewhere on the side of the box. Edited for tryping errrs
