  1. That's nothing - last week, I saw a boat with no home mooring charge his batteries by starting up a water-cooled nuclear reactor which drained the entire contents of the Macclesfield canal leaving everyone high and dry. He then left, leaving spent fuel rods on the towpath. The resulting radiation caused the hair to fall out of anyone within half a mile. Damned inconsiderate if you ask me.

  2. When a discussion/argument resorts to name-calling or personal insults, it usually means the one who is calling the names has run out of contructive counterpoint but 1) still wants to type/say something and 2) doesn't have the maturity to accept the counter argument, or concede that they're wrong, or apologise. If one measured it on a win-lose scale the other person at this stage has normally "won" their point.

  3. Didn't realize you spoke for the forum TDH - I'm a member and I would have liked to see how he got on, he was a very young man with little to no experience making some pretty big decisions. Maybe he was a bit of a loose cannon, big deal, he's young. How about Tree? Wonder how she's getting on these days - another name that comes to mind, someone who left because of some quite hurtful / needless comments regarding her writing style. Would you say the forum better off without her as well? And before you jump all over her writing style, it wasn't my cup of tea either. However, if I didn't feel like wading through it to decipher it, I'd simply skip over it and not get stressy about it. As always, just MHO Chocolate Macaroon Bars tomorrow Paul

  4. Adam, I think we should apologise for some of the posts you have received I have experience of upsetting another dyslexic person on a different forum and am learning to not make assumptions about people from their postings I don't always get it right Richard

  5. Completely agree with you Nick! This from one of the people that re-built and still maintains Maria. We lend the boat f.o.c. to that organisation on an annual basis because we agree with the aims of the HBS in promoting traditional boating . Mooring on a water point is not very traditional is it? Allegedly, when the crew were about to leave Maria at Wheelock, the error was pointed out to them: " oh it will be Ok." was the reply. Words fail me. The CRT enforcement team have been in contact with the owners , they were referred on to the Chairperson of the HBS . On behalf of the owners of Maria, may I apologise for any inconvenience caused? We wrongly thought the boat was in responsible hands. Bill PS: I hope you were referring to the HBS sign for fuel on 5/11/14, not Maria....... And it's too late in the day for popcorn, goodnight.

  7. Just to say I've just got back from an entirely peaceful trip up and down the Caldon, which may not be any benefit to the boater who got done over there a couple of weeks back, but it does look like it was a one-off. I did note that Nicholdon's latest says that there are good moorings at Hanley Park (which in one sense os true and in another is not), but anyway... don't let one bad experience put you off. It's grotty at the bottom, and stunning at the top.

  8. Question Why do some members think it is acceptable to call people names in a forum ?. If (using the same Pub example) a person was to wander from there boat, into a Canal side pub and decided to start calling people they have never met names, (Banter aside) I fancy that wouldn't be met very favorably at all, it might even prompt a very unpleasant response indeed.

  9. Mmmm. Interesting idea. Assume canal is 10m wide and 2 deep so 20m squared in section, this gives 20 tonnes water per linear meter of canal. To raise water temperature from ambient (say 10C) to 100 C needs 90*4.200 kJ/kg or 90*4200 kJ/Te or 378MJ/Te To boil this water uses a lot more energy, 2256kJ/Kg or 2256MJ/Te so the total is 2634MJ/Te. With 20Te/meter that's 52680MJ/meter. Macclesfield canal is approx 27 miles long but with 26 locks. Assume the nuclear boat only boiled off the pound he was in then the average pound is about a mile long or 1609 meters. For this average pound (assuming no heat losses etc) then the energy required is at least 1609*52680 MJ or 84762120MJ or 84.76TJ. If the batteries took 2 hours to charge, then this work would be done at the rate of 84.76TJ in 2*3600 seconds, thus the power is 11.7 TW (Tera-Watts) The latest style of pressurised water reactor gives 4500 MWt. or 4.5TW, thus it would take approx 3 of these reactors to do this in the time quoted. To misquote Iain Banks that's some Feersum Endjinn! Jonesthenuke PS done in a rush so numbers may be approximate! Edited to add, if the fuel rods are still there can I have them? (I really am taking this seriously (not))

  11. Hi ya Adam, i know where you are coming from, and obviously you got to do what you feel is best for you. Have a read of this, just click on it - http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=60448#entry1149674 Now all I will say, is I had LOADS of PMs from people that don't post on the Fourm after reading this thread, agreeing with most of what's said, But if you decide to stick with it, it is SO worth it in my opinion. There are Very good Knowledge and Helpful people on here that far out way the Name callers and antagonists. I recently got called a Moron by one of the long time members of this forum. It's just the way faceless people flex there muscles sometimes. Stay, Lurk, Go whatever you decide, Be safe.

  12. Beat me to it! I think you mean Scania, as Skandia are an investment company owned by Old Mutual. I have a Scania D8 in my barge and its great. Very economical. PS welcome to the forum Neville.

  16. Do whatever you want. If you stay in CRT's good books it won't be a problem. If you don't just bleat and whinney like the rest of the rest of the piss takers and give CRT a bashing for your non compliance. Seems to be the done thing.

  17. In my travels (not canal based) I make a special point of using Tesco bogs whenever possible, and never buying anything in the store. Just my small protest at the unfair competition.

  18. Not stirring at all. I just see far too much complaining about CRT who seem to be damned if they do and damned if they don't. They really can't win can they? The guidelines set out are really not rocket science if you intend to stick to them. Those finding themselves "suddenly" on CRT's radar were surely only a baby step from being on as was BW's radar? IE bridge hopping. So what do we do? Leave then too it or clamp down? Well I for one vote clamp down. Start to weed out the piss takers and the rest will get the message. No doubt there will be some bleating along the way about how unfairly treated they have been but they will no doubt forget about how their behaviour has been somewhat unfair to those who choose to play fair.

  19. It should have been there whilst taking on water, then move off. Not moving off 10 minutes after it had been taking on water. Therefore there should be no need to breast up. Being a "non-standard" boat it is particularly difficult to breast up to and clamber around. Yes I agree that the chap's hose was too short, but of course it would have been fine without the obstruction. Presumably you think a physical fitness test should be required as part of the BSS and any old codgers who can't stand on one leg on a narrow, wet wooden gunnel with nothing to hold on to should have their certificates revoked? That should cut down on congestion!

  20. We love our garden on the roof and yes we do get a few 'can you see where your going or im sure you could find room for another pot if you really tried'comments but all in all most people love it. We are used to seeing around the pots . Never Lost a pot yet on any of our tidal crossings , only Ever had one cucumber stolen off the roof. Apart from the flowers we grow most of our Salad and veg in the summer . Your boat your roof , if you Want flowers, veg, logs or coal or just a gang plank its your choice. Enjoy . That's what its all about in my mind. Bunny.

  21. What I have done here is to post up the hard evidence that CaRT’s enforcement officers act in ignorance/defiance of the law, targeting even those who have done no wrong. That ought to give pause for thought to all others who are likewise doing no wrong and obeying the ‘rules’. More worrying is the support that their superiors give, even while knowing better. That too, is a matter of record; my postings of the evidence ensure that no-one is obliged to simply take my word for it. To the short-sighted, the Ostrich sticking its head in the sand looks like an innocent shrub; to the clear-sighted, it looks more like someone bending over and presenting their backside in open invitation. Keep yawning, it’s your own rear end to leave as vulnerable as you please, and it is altogether possible that CaRT won't find it appealing.

  22. Nice one CR! Might I reiterate my suggestion that Adam undoes the work he's made for HNBC's volunteers by supporting the club? Either by joining or by making a purchase from the shop? www.hnbc.org

  23. I agree. We wanted to go through to Spiers wharf in Glasgow but the Wendy weeny basic swing bridge had to be operated by a trained operator, who couldn't guarantee to get us back out again when we needed the next day. So we stopped in the BW basin and all those beautiful new moorings were wasted. Ditto we visited Bowling by train and the Kelpies by car because 16 locks means an advance booking, all day escorted down, and all next day (if you're lucky) escorted back, in their working hours not ours. Such a waste of some huge investment. Guide at the Kelpies was explaining why they had to build a new sea lock and extension for xx squill ion pounds - the new lock built for the Millennium project was so badly planned that there was only a 20 min access window per tide. !!!!!???! Now they have the new new better lock it is 'really busy'. So far they are getting '2 or 3 boats per week'. Can we have another dose of that £10 million for the Lichfield please? And while we're at it, would BW Scotland like to lend the Droitwich one of their THREE shiny new reedcutter boats?

  24. What is it with Scottish Canals? They don't seem to want boats, especially if they move. You can't operate the locks, visitor moorings are almost non-existent, and leisure mooring ( and boating) seems to be discouraged. A totally different mindset from south of the Border. Spectacular projects like the Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies, but boats? Oh dear, no.
