  1. How sad this all is...for our wonderful waterways. What an amazing feat they were...canals being dug the length and breadth of the country. Rivers being made navigable. What a debt we owe to those builders and what a huge debt we also owe to the people who dedicated their time to eventually restore them. How do we repay that ? By claiming 'rights'.....by wasting the limited resources we have . Each clever person who finds a 'chink' in the wording, steals a little part of that. Every person who refuses to pay their license, steals a part. Each big business decision that BW made or CaRT make..rightly or wrongly, steals a part of it. Every court case..another part is lost...solicitors..barristers...costs.. AND ABOVE ALL..the SPIRIT of it all....lost. We all know the terms of our license or mooring agreement. We all know under what conditions we get to use this wonderful system. We know what a CC license means... We KNOW that if we live on a boat, we have few rights...so why suddenly think we have found a 'chink' and we should have rights, I don't know. This is more sad for the waterways than individuals.

  3. Rachael Naughty Cal: the Angry Boater Maybe you could do your own thread and stop posting on this one? You are inflammatory abusive and frequently on attack. You call people knobs because you are being challenged, probably too late. You, in my mind and others, maybe not all newcomers either, depreciate this forum. You have no insight. So it is not worth engaging in discussion with you.

  4. Many of you will know I am director and general slave at Beacon Boats Ltd. Yesterday I launched our 18th new build, n/b Bisbigliando. This will be the last boat we will launch. Last October, my co-director, and brother in law, was suddenly taken very ill. Unfortunately he has not recovered as well as we hoped. I have finished the build with some help from a couple of very good friends, without him. At the time we had just had the review of Willow Too published, which brought in a huge amount of work, which would have carried us on to the end of 2016. However, we have decided that we must close our doors. Neil won't be able to come back, and our business very much relied on the two of us, who we are, how we work. That is what many customers based their choice on when they booked with us. I am happy to say though, all customers have been aware of this for a few weeks, all deposits are returned and slots cancelled, all builds completed. No debts, warranties are being covered fully. And as we close, every single boat Beacon have built, is still with the people we first built it for. We must have been getting it right! Its been a great little business, a fantastic job, hard work, good times. We have met extraordinary and lovely people. I am very sad to close this business, but feel it is absolutely the right decision. Thanks go out to all who have supported us in many ways over the years, and wishes to all our customers of very happy times with their boats. And for me now? I'm not sure yet, I hope as this door shuts another will open, hopefully still with the marine industry somewhere. Cheers to all my boats!

  6. Of course I am not against CaRT in general, anymore than I was ever against BW in general; they are the guardians of the national asset that we live, work and take pleasure in. It is because I care for the waterways that I sometimes express myself with some vehemence against those at executive level who, as I see it, have driven the management - and are driving it still - into the ground, due in very large part to the philosophical legacy of the unwarranted penny-pinching of government [of whatever colour], and their appointees, and of their overseeing [?!] bodies. There was never anything wrong with BW that a clean sweep of the appointed upper executive could not have remedied, and there was nothing wrong with the funding principle [of government meeting the funding shortfall], that a radical re-arrangement of methodology could not have cured, of the ridiculous system DEFRA employed - wherein BW could never be certain of what they could budget for looking ahead, and wherein they were effectively penalised for any success in the previous year’s budgeting. As I said in my previous answer to you, the present arrangement can never suffice to keep pace with existing maintenance requirements, let alone allow of any improvement. The previous arrangement [with the methodology subjected to radical reform] of government taking responsibility for that which they nationalised, is, on the authority of every study into the subject, the only feasible means of funding the national asset. Belief in the reliable generosity of a populace prepared to add, in adequate amounts, to the huge list of other charitable demands on their purse, is akin to belief in fairies. One suggestion that occurs as I write, as to how one might make CaRT able to pay its way - demand that every Member of Parliament who voted for transition into the voluntary sector [or abstained] dedicate voluntarily to the Trust that percentage of their own income that would make up the shortfall. I say this frivolously, yet with a degree of wistful underlying sincerity.

  7. I am afraid that mayalld has never forgiven me for winning a protracted 6 year court battle against BW/CaRT’s section 8’ing of a half dozen boats in my care. This case he had derisively scorned as “the charade of a case that is about little more than your belief that you have found a clever way of avoiding paying your way . . . frankly somebody who avoids paying towards the upkeep of the waterways he uses, and then expects BW/CRT to pay for his many days in court to try and argue ever more obscure reasons why he can avoid paying anything is no hero.” His first comment on the result of the [successfully appealed] judgment of 2012 was: “The man is a freeloader, who not only isn’t paying his way, but has caused BW to spend a significant amount of money on indulging his desire for a day in court.” He never did account for the fact that I voluntarily paid for 3 of the licences regardless of my position that it was not necessary. His prognostications as to eventual outcome were: “From reading the judgement, there seems little prospect that Mr Moore will be granted any permanent relief from being evicted. Rather, I suspect that, like the previous criticism, the outcome will be that BW went about it the wrong way, and should have been more particular in ensuring that their processes are right, and that in consequence Mr Moore will be allowed a 6 month period of grace before the vessel has to be removed.” In the event, as you will doubtless have garnered from Richard’s google search, I was proved right and the Notices were quashed as illegal. Evidently, resentment at this reversal of mayalld’s expectations has had the unfortunate effect of creating permanent perceptual problems as to the content and intent of my life and postings. It is a pity, because aside from gratuitous nastiness at times [which had appeared to be diminishing of late], he has the ability to see and communicate on most other matters with some intelligent insight, which is reflected in a majority of his generally useful posts. I would hope that most would be capable of taking whatever I write at whatever face-value they perceive in that, without feeling a need to discern some imagined agenda.

  8. Comments from members of this forum about the plight of Rod Taylor and his eviction from Poplar Dock Marina have made me question just how much unity there is now in the boating world and worse, how fragmented and dog eat dog we have become... The topic started with a straight forward post and has gone through so much back biting and frankly, self effacing "you bought a boat so you should expect this and think yourself lucky" it is now reminding me of, at best a Python sketch and at worst we should expect to be treated as Second Class Citizens.... I will declare now that I am fully in favour of regulation. I will take that further in that if a Marina operator is good then they have no fear of regulation. Any operator who says regulation may stop them trading should be stopped. Please comment on the topic and start your own if you want to contemplate your navel Andy

Why he feels the need to continue to grumble at moi posts, when they bother him so much is a mystery, he knows what to do to make him feel better

  11. As a former English teacher I first found Tree's use of "moi" a trifle offensive and difficult to read. English has a certain "flow" to it and using "moi" breaks the flow. But I thought her posts were worth reading so now I just substitute the correct English pronoun for "moi" wherever it appears and it takes all of about three paragraphs and your mind is programmed to not even see the "moi"s anymore. Aside from the "moi" thing, she uses very good punctuation, which makes her writing clear and easy to understand. Have you ever tried to read the garbage written by clowns who think it is cute to omit any and all punctuation or capitalization? Anyway, Tree seems to have a good heart and she effectively communicates what she wants to say. Since what you say about her writing is way off base from a linguistic standpoint, and pretty obtuse from a humanistic one, perhaps you should look within and try to gain a little introspect into your own insecurities rather than try to project them on her.

  13. It remains my view that you engage in endless litigation not in order to protect what may be regarded as equitable rights, but in the hope of eventually getting a perverse judgement that either resurrects some long defunct right that is not equitable or establishes some new right through finding an unintended hole in the law. As an acedemic exercise in the study of the law, it is interesting. As a way of protecting the rights of boaters, it is an abject failure. You cost CRT shed loads of money that would be better spent on maintaining the canals, and gain a few people the right to avoid paying their equitable share of the costs of the waterways. The vast majority of boaters lose out because of your actions. As to your motives, what I wrote is just a précis of what you wrote.

  17. Hence my post re what agenda does Nigel have,,and the fact that if you have a clever mind and the time to dig, and because a lot of the laws are embroiled in 19th century confusion try and, use it for present day rulings it just doesnt work and we have CaRT having to spend much needed money for the canals in the courts.

  18. tis nowt more than 'tree talk' which makes moi smile and imo, something no matter how small, which can bring a lickle bit of sunshine into your life, no matter how gloomy that life can be at times is a good thing. Why some people get so cross astounds moi at times, because at the end of the day, nowt moi writes is rude or offensive..tis just moi play on a few words. In the great scheme of living on our wondrous planet, far more important things to be concerned about. no one is forced to read moi posts..the choice is ultimately up to each person..if moi don't like what anyone posts ..then a click on the ignore button works extremely well for moi..its really that simple Life is really far to short to get worked up about lickle things..its about enjoying life, making the best of what you have, caring for your fellow human beings and most of all being happy. To be honest moi did think of not posting, as it is unfair to other posters to have their threads, sadly taken off topic due to some people making moi ' treetalk' an issue. Hmm..then thought stuff that for a lark, moi ain't gonner change as done nowt horrid to anyone..those who don't like it don't have to read it ..end of chapter haha..

  21. Thank you for being so open. I doubt we have met and yet - YES - we absolutely do know each other. I am everyone you have ever met and different aspects of you are there in everyone I have met ... & myself too. In the words of Jimmy Pursey "understand him - he'll understand you ... for you are him and he is you." We are all angry sometimes -and condescending & arrogant. We can all be giving, selfish, smart & dumb too. Our closest friends can become our deepest enemies and we can feel great affection & warmth towards those we once felt hatred towards - often changing our entire belief system about a person in a heart beat. The gentle, kind & loving person is equally capable of being harsh, mean & hateful. That is you, me , your father, all the CRT executives, Max Clifford, those other boaters, all the characters you have referenced in your post - all of us. Just because we see one side of a person , it is easy to assume that is all there is. We all do it and that is because our emotions blind us from seeing the other side. When we feel angry towards someone, we become blinded to their calm & compassionate side. Similarly , if we see someone as being fair , reasonable and open, we will probably be blind to their selfish , unfair and prejudiced side. If you have ever thought someone is "always like that" it just means you haven't looked closely enough. It is a misperception. But, again, we are ALL everything - sometimes. Our experiences with each person dictate which energies come out. When someone offers us things we want or need, we believe that is a good person. If they deny us something important to us, then they are "bad." Or are they? It can be intense. Neither of those perceptions is actually the truth, They are just our judgements based on our experiences, belief systems, values & prejudices. Everyone has a right to be angry. Everyone has a right to every emotion. When you are born , you get the full package. That is what it means to be human. Yes, you can be arrogant, condescending daft & closed. To me, that was how your first post came across. You can also be humble. sensitive intelligent & vulnerable. That is how I find you now. It doesn't mean I am RIGHT in those perceptions though. It is just my silly judgements based on how open or closed you are being towards me. In just 2 posts from you , I have seen 2 completely different sides to you. You might feel the same about my 2 responses to you. When you first posted, I regarded what you wrote as unworthy of a friendly or kind response so I opened fire. Now, it seems this exchange is the complete opposite for us both. Do you agree? I do not want to speak for you though. Your perceptions of me are for you - and they are also your entitlement. Personally, I often react strongly when someone judges a creative endeavour as "rubbish" rather than acknowledge that it is just not for them. That does not mean I am right to do so though. A good chunk of my life has been spent in the arts so its a world I try to support. When I see others disrespecting a world that I love, it comes across to me as something I want to defend . In this instance, not only did I see you as judging something you had not made an effort to try to understand but you also came across as abusive towards me. Consequently, and partly because I was in an irritable mood last night anyway, I decided to behave in a similar way. I quite enjoyed it if I'm honest ... and it felt justified. You gave me an opportunity to be rude & cutting. Yes, sometimes, I enjoy getting to do that too. I try to be accountable for what I say and think . Consequently, I like others to do the same. That is another of my prejudices. I do not like people when they try to avoiding taking responsibility for their actions... Or what they say / write. Again, this has nothing to do with what is right or wrong. It is just something that triggers me & will often cause me to react. When I referred to you being "stuck" , it was a metaphor. I saw you as being stuck in your thinking and I wanted to push your buttons to see what would happen. Sometimes when provoked, we dig in and become even more determined to fight our corner; other times we become more introspective and can maybe start to see things in another way. This time I was not being sarcastic or patronising. I hope you have an awesome day.

  22. I don't think you understand the role of CRT. If they were just a canal maintenance organisation then it would have been far simpler to just farm the job out by CCT to a civil engineering company, like they do with the roads. The waterways are a far more complex deal where they are an enforcing authority, a tourist information centre, a marketing company, a museum curator and much more, which means that they have to take into account the relevant legislation and, you'll be sorry to hear, peoples' rights. Very good but I prefer...

  25. Yeah these nasty people claiming rights and all that stuff. Presumably you don't believe you should have any 'rights' or are the 'rights' you enjoy just more important other peoples' and, if removed, perhaps you would waste limited resources trying to get them back? Rights are something we should all fight for and then, hopefully, if we lose ours someone will be there to fight alongside us.

  26. That's lovely, but the opposite is to just roll over & die, let them scam you out of everything... So to go along with that, those early pioneers that reclaimed the waterways we all enjoy today, after they had been allowed to fall in to rack & ruin, should have not bothered... They fought the system & won, but now you reccommend we dont fight the system.

  27. Joel do we know each other as you apparently know me, don't really understand the comment about me being stuck somewhere. I have had to deal with real angry people in the past the Father who wanted to kill the person who had mown down his daughter while drunk, A young man who's 63 year old mum was beat up by a burglar for 6 pounds, and I could go on, these people are the ones who have a right to be angry. Last year I was moored at one of my favorite spots just next to a winding hole where a trip boat turns 3 times a day, another narrow boat pulled in the space in front of me where there was a no mooring sign, now I must admit the sign is not obvious when you first pull in. So I said to him, hi mate do you know your not supposed to moor there to which to which he replied bloody hell didn't see that and began untying his boat, 15 seconds later another boater appeared ranting and raving about blocking the winding, to which a massive argument took place, I thought it was going to end in fisticuffs. So my point here is the boater was going to move but because an angry boater intervened a situation turned really nasty. Personally don't do sarcastic and patronising I tend to think it comes over as condescending arrogance

  29. For £90K I could be seriously interested! It is very well fitted out but I would prefer a generator rather than the Travelpower. As for the 'pink' - the ad suggests that "changing the 'highlight colours' could be negotiated". I could get used to the pink - at a price. It is 'workmanlike', not 'pig-ugly'. A different paint scheme could improve the appearance. Anyway, I don't look at the outside, you do! At 45' x 12.6' (3.6:1) it is better proportioned than the 70' canoes that most of you paddle. Damn, I am defending her as if she were already mine. Alan

  30. I think one of your problems as far as individual painters may be that you just want side panels painting. A freelance boat painter usually books a dock for 6 week slots , sometimes concurrently so a short job like yours, two maybe three weeks, wastes a slot. There is also the sticking point of once you agree a job, and finding issues of say, rust or tar, spreading across areas NOT to be painted as well as to be painted.i.e tug deck hatches or handrails. A decent boat painter wanting to do a job to satisfy themselves as well as you (quality workmanship), will be hard pushed not to start on the aforesaid extra areas, and then have to continue..... If it is just inset panels, it may be a simple job, but if any rust is creeping, or previously done paint job flakes off into a non-requested part, are you happy to sanction the extra cost or not. That is why the quality boat painters quote so much, and the others quote so little.

  35. I only logged in to see if there were any interesting cat photos and all this is going on. I suppose it would be bad form not to contribute. If you haven't enjoyed my previous posts - or blog - it's probably a good idea if you stop reading now. This isn't for you, Firstly, despite what a couple of members might believe, I am not seeking any privileges which are not available to everyone else. I do have an ego and that would definitely have me spiralling out of control. Before we know it, I'll be jumping the queue at water points and attempting to double moor my narrowboat alongside the Queen Mary 2. When I signed up to the forum, I had some communication with one of the administrators about how best to go about announcing / discussing the 'Angry Boater' blog. I was mindful that there might be some 'do's & dont's' .... so I asked. Perhaps as a result of my first post having provoked some debate, I was invited to announce my future posts. That was the guidance I was given so that was what I did. I had no intention of upsetting anyone by subverting the etiquette of the forum. My next post - or at least the manner in which it was made - seemed to traumatise one or two members, one of whom cited a forum rule that I was in breach of. Bearing in mind that I'd already been told my posts were welcome by admin, I didn't resonate with the ruling guidance that this member was directing at me. My reaction arose from the tone in which the point was being made, however, rather than the content of the rule itself. Does anyone welcome a stranger entering their life and demanding that they do things in a certain way? In fact, are there any methods of communicating which come with a stronger guarantee that the recipient will be motivated to do the opposite? Anyhow, the thread was getting a little heated by then and - whilst I was composing my reply - it was locked by Admin. I didn't even get the final word. It felt very dis-empowering. Yesterday, as a result of a meeting amongst the powers that be, I was asked to post future links to my blog via my signature only. Consequently , that is what I will do from hereon.... So feel free to subscribe at http://www.angryboater.com if you want to be informed when there's a new post. I generally aim for one a week. I try not to be contrived though so - if I don't have something that I really want to say - I'll wait until I do. If there is any confusion about my intentions (and there seems to be some), the aim of the blog is not to promote bad behaviour, endorse anger (not that I feel anger is, of itself, a bad thing anyway) , condone violence or have CRT merged with LIDL but to explore boating issues in the wider context of what it is to be human. I try to embrace my own imperfections in that process and scrutinise my own (sometimes bad) behaviour. It's a simple exercise in attempting to be authentic even when I may not be especially proud of something I have said or done. (Some of the others are a bit lighter -eg the one about naming boats). It's not all tantrums and tillers. The reason I chose the name is that there is a myth amongst some boaters - and many non-boaters - that we are all about peace and serenity ( look at how many boat names allude to escaping & dreams etc). However, the day to day reality is that boating - just like everything else - has tensions & problems associated with it. In my perception, there's plenty of repressed anger on the waterways and a lot of angry boaters. Many of us are taught that displaying anger is somehow shameful but I don't believe it needs to be. It's an emotion. It's human. It's all of us. I used to carry a lot of it. In fact, it was a particularly extreme moment that set about a chain of events resulting in me becoming a boater. Not so long ago , I had stage 2 hypertension. Living on the water helped a lot with that but I'd be lying if I said I do not still get angry sometimes. Some of you might now be thinking that the blog is some kind of self imposed therapy that I'm forcing upon others. Well, there is a therapeutic value to writing, of course, but it's not my primary motive for the blog. I've been writing a book for a while and have been stuck / demotivated lately. The blog is helping me tune up my writing skills and sharpen my 'voice' . It also allows me to get valuable feedback on what I'm doing. Obviously, I enjoy hearing that people enjoy my writing but equally I benefit from receiving constructive comments from those who do not. I'll also be launching an "Angry Boater" podcast soon. I wanted to see if there was any interest for the blog first though. Thank you for starting a thread about this, Gary. I was humbled when I saw that someone was interested enough to take the time to do so. If future angry boater posts raise issues that merit discussion, whilst I would love to have engaged with those conversations on this forum , a place where so many boaters and viewpoints already exist, it doesn't look like that is a practical option. However, if you subscribe to the angry boater blog, we can do all that over there instead. Meanwhile, I look forward to joining in many of the other discussions over here, http://www.angryboater.com

  38. Hi Forumers, Despite of having been boating for 5 years, only now I realised I should share this nagging feeling I have got. My hope is anybody with similar experience to join in and speak loud. I am not having a go or trying to slag anybody off; I am trying to promote here something free and really simple; a change in attitude. If by writing this post I manage to change one boater's approach then it means to me it was worth it joining the forum and investing a few minutes of my time. If not only one but a few join, it will be a great succes and could be the begining of a new boating era. As I mentioned above, I have been boating for over 5 years now. When I first started looking into getting a boat and living aboard it was exciting times. I didn't know about this forum then and the boat community seemed really hermetic, so it took my partner and I a good few months of intensive research before boarding this venture until one day the dream came true. Some of the things that we encounetered with this new way of living turned out to be much better than anticipated and some others harder or disapointing but overall it turned out to be a lifestyle that suited us perfectly. Becoming constant cruisers, we took really well giving up on some of life little luxuries and we dealt with periods of struggle having to navigate in unfavourable conditions or facing the frustration of having to deal with one problem after another of a boat that didn't want to work. However, that is part of the fun (not quite, but still). The most shocking drawback I found though, and which this post is about is the boating community. We found there is an awful atmosphere in boating. Most boaters don't say hi, instead they look with a sour look if at all. Obvious hellos get no response. People from marinas and moorings hate constant cruisers and viceversa. Constant cruisers don't like each other. You are being looked up if your boat is "crap" and the same when your boat is "nice" or expensive. There is jealousy in the air. About what? I don't know. If a boat is struggling doing any kind of maniouvre, instead of help or understanding you are more likely to get patronising attittudes. I have seen this plenty of times. Who on earth struggles purposely? Grief + struggle is of no help. A helping hand is though. Same here in the forum. I see dozens of unhelpful or arrogant replies all the time. Why? The purpose of this post is not getting replies saying how good one self is and all that but to think about us critically and evaluate if sometimes we adopt unfriendly unhelpful attitudes and wonder why do we do it. After a while boating, although through clenched teeth, I adopted myself this sour attitude. I became the boater I describe above. I got fed up of being pleasant, polite and getting no response and I became unfriendly myself but it's time to change. Boaters in general and constant cruisers specially, let's be nice to each other and let's try to help one another. We need to look out for eachother as we all have the same problems and worries and only that way we can work for our own commont benefits. All the best, Emilia

  39. Re changing things mid contract, phone companies are allowed to do that. The new guidance for mobile phone contracts say they can as long as the contract originally said they can. Before this got mentioned (just recently) A year befor 1/2 way through my contract my mobile phone put up my bill by 40p & apparently I have to just suck it up. Contract ends in May & I'm leaving them I know previously with BT landline I tried to leave because the contract was up, but it turns out they had put me on a new rolling contract (less than a month after the old contract finished) & I was expected to do the full term of that new contract. They also jacked up a price at the time (I cant remember what) Well I used it as a get out clause because at the time, although they could change the price, it had to be a reasonable change. The change in price amounted to pennies, but in fact worked out at over 1000% which at a time when inflation was under 5% was IMO unreasonable & I dared them to argue the toss in court, at which point they capitulated
