  1. Such sad news, all I can do is send you all a hug and may Will now be at peace. Although you are remembered in sadness right now Will, may that sadness in time to come, be replaced with happy memories full of laughter and the memory of your life be a celebration and your family and friends will celebrate your life. blessed be and may your spirit shine Lorraine

  2. The way I see it, there are two possible scenarios here. 1) He was a genuine guy, with a genuinely horrible situation looking for help. He created an account with his someone else's facebook login (which was already logged in on the computer he borrowed), he left himself logged on to the forum until 3:15, though by that point he had left the computer, so did not actually see any of the replies. We aren't all computer literate, and if he had followed his nose this is a very plausible scenario. 2) He was a troll, he popped on here to try and cause trouble.... If 1) and he manages to pop back (which he might do as an anonymous user, remember he potentially logged on with someone else's facebook account, was it a work colleague? Or maybe a shared computer in a library where someone had carelessly left themselves logged in?) he will now be scared shitless, and come to the conclusion that no one here is willing to help him as they have concluded that he lives under a bridge. That would be a sad state of affairs. There is obviously a wealth of knowledge on here (I know, it's been invaluable to me), and it would be such a shame if someone in need of help was scared away. If 2) then the posts about his living under a bridge is exactly what he wants. Also, a true troll, as I understand them, would seek to push the situation further. They would reply "not insured - boat is in such and such location, please anyone who can help come down to such and such a bridge/lock/pub as soon as you can! Got to go now phone battery running out" Can I suggest that there should be a Troll thread, running separately. That way, when something like this happens everyone can pop over to that thread and debate it happily, bridge jokes and all, without risking scaring away a potential person in need? It could be called 'under the bridge' or 'poo sticks' or something similar, and a simple "I'm off to play poo sticks" type post would alert anyone in the know that an alternative conversation was taking place. This would lead for lots of opportunity for people to gloat that they were correct, either in assuming that a poster was a troll, or in believing their innocence, while leaving a fair and unbiased scientific test situation on the original thread. It would also remove much of the satisfaction that I can only assume genuine trolls get from banter on forum pages. This thread is three pages long, with very little constructive feedback on the issue. I would say that is a win for a troll. If it ran to 5 posts, and then went silent with a randon comment about playing poo sticks, I'd suggest that they may get bored and go and cause trouble elsewhere. This is a very close knit community on here, and it can be hard as an outsider to crack it. Yes, everyone is extremely experienced and knowledgeable and generous with their time, but sometimes it can become a scary place for a newbie... Just my two pence.

  4. You really can't read, can you? I wrote "read PAST the first sentence". I mentioned that it was only five words long to encourage you to continue. Now, have another shot at it. It really isn't so difficult. Honest. Nice one. Reminds me of the story about the famously taciturn President Coolidge. Little girl goes up to the president and says: "Mr President, my momma bet me five dollars I couldn't get more than two words out of you". Coolidge: "Momma wins".

  8. Looking to the future when seals may degrade/fail I would position the shower tray in such a way that you have easy access to the fittings underneath so that you can see if they are leaking and replace stuff if necessary. Down between the ribs might give you extra headroom and look neat but it's going to be a pig to work on in future years

  9. Shocking. If you can't trust a crook hawking knocked-off TVs out of the back of a van, whom can you trust? I only hope your daughter's boyfriend won't let this experience deter him from handling stolen goods in the future.

  11. Yes IIRC it appeared when the forum software was updated a year or so ago. It is useful to be able to have the two views, though I generally prefer the code view because you can see exactly what's going on, and it is the fix when you can't add text below quoted text without it appearing as part of the quote. If you mean very recently, <Guessing alert> its on or off status may be "remembered" by a cookie, so if you delete all cookies maybe it defaults to off?

  12. Our windows had been happily sitting there, minding their own business and not letting in any water, for over 20 years. Last summer three of them at different times started leaking slightly around the frame. In each case I checked the tightness of all the screws and found a couple that easily gave quarter of a turn, and each time it stopped the leak. It's still on my to-do list to check all the other windows.

  13. For an edge seal. Tape around the edge of the window frame, on the window frame, to about an eighth of an inch from the edge. Tape around the window on the cabin side, again, to about an eighth. Run a bead of rubberised sealant all the way around and smooth to a bevel. Pull the tape off immediately to leave a smart track around the window. The will do quite well, but a fuller fix would require the removal of the window, which should be sealed with butyl.

  14. just want to clarify a couple of things As far as I know, Ive never mentioned or expected 300 amps to go through a 7mm wire? it was the charging cables only 7mm rated at 50 amps, On 240v 30 amps max through 30 amp charger, when under way max 40 amps through alternator. I Have exaggerated, tongue in cheek, how I've used my Bow Thruster, I understand 10 second blasts, but used it when departing berth, clearing other moored boats, getting use to the steering over again correcting a approach to bridge. But on return to berth, I've noticed a change in tone, still working, And when sitting down having a think, couldn't understand why this is the case Through the powers of this forum I now know I've installed inappropriate size charging 7MM 50 amp cables The cables linking battery's, fuse and BT are the correct 400 amp cable as forum members have advised, 70mm thick cables will be installed, The battery's will also be checked as it maybe they are knackered. Helming a boat, like any thing else,Its all about practice, and as yet haven't had much practice but I will, Col edited fat fingers

  15. I went back to uni to do an MA in my thirties, and often found myself asking 'daft' questions in seminars. Nine times out of ten other students were wondering the same thing but too self-conscious to ask. I've since been on the other side of the fence as a tutor on first-year undergraduate courses, and I see the same pattern: puzzled faces, finally a 'daft' question from a more confident student, and gratitude all round (not least from me) as the blockage is identified and (hopefully!) removed. Moral of the story being: never feel daft about asking anything. If anybody is obnoxious enough to try to make you feel stupid for it, that says a lot more about their own insecurities than about your intelligence.

  16. This is from memory. I think most ST pumps were centrifugal pumps rather than diaphragm or flexible impeller pumps. and are fine in any sort of water. The pump head itself has no wearing parts apart from a seal and possibly a bearing but I think its the motor bearing that supports the impeller. There are two problems. 1. The impeller may be capable of blocking with debris so it is worth taking the pump cover off and inspecting it. I think the impeller consists of two plates with the flutes between them. It the gap between the plates that block. A strainer on the inlet should prevent problems. 2. Being centrifugal it will not pump air like modern pumps can so if you drain or run the tank dry it can be interesting getting the pump to bleed. However I have always found a full tank and a good suck on a single open tap sorts it. If it is a centrifugal pump there must also be a non-return valve on the inlet. Any adjustable pressure switch will do. You can still get the D Square ones on Ebay otherwise use a caravan (Whale) pressure switch driving an automotive relay. An accumulator is always nice to have. The question of using or replacing the ST pump I think comes down to the availability of spares and the ease/cost of repair and I think that all of these would suggest that a modern pump may be a better bet in the longer term but if immediate cost is a problem then stick with the pump you have.

  22. Believe me I'm there it's finally sunk it my head I'm there, wrong cable. I'm scared to ask this question but..... So when I get the cables, what would happen if I connected it to the 150 amp alternator direct Will not a split charger stop power being used/drained from domestic battery's, but only allow the alternator to direct its charge to the BT bank when needed Is this what a split charger does?? It must be frustrating for you folks trying to educate us non engineering people Another thank you Really wish I could buy you all beers Col

  23. I do not recomend any one doing it my way but you did ask none at all seriously i spoke to a couple of people on the towpath and bought a boat. I suggest the only thing i planned was getting the mooring, i was told by someone a space was available and i managed to covince BW to let me have it, this was before the auction process. I had never been on a narrow boat, didnt truly understand the size of the network, how to work a lock, lift bridge and the electric bridge at Wrenbury caused a bit of head scratching on the day i took control of he boat i stood on the back deck and realised i didnt know where the fuel or water went, how the electrics worked, how to start the boat, how to steer, how to stop, how to moor, how to tie up for the night. i spent at least the first hour thinking how friendly everyone was because they were all waveing at me, untill i realsed i was passing on the wrong side. my first lock was the Middlewich big lock, i worked out how to do it by asking the locals, Oh and i jumped my first lock queue there. well i didnt know! :-) i got shouted at by Mauren at the wardle lock on the middlewich branch for incompitance, i know realise that is/was a right of passage i finally found a tap to fill my water tank and it took so long to fill up i was convinced it had a leak, so spent the next few night having sinking flooding dreams I crushed my cratch and headlight under a lift bridge it was also bloody good news i was originaly pointing in the right direction because it was only once i had got to my home mooring that someone showed me how and where i could turn round. But you know what i LOVED every stupid scary moment of that trip and it is the best thing i have done for a very long time, i also still love coming home to my boat. so there you go Dont do it how i did it but if you do make the most of it because its great fun

  24. We will be looking to have Bettie's Blessing on both sides of our WB - we could arrange to be in the Braunston / Warwick area around Crick time. As with Blackrose, ours would not be under cover.

  25. I ve read thru this thread today . I can t really comprehend what on earths going on . TJ - I' m 42 yrs old . But not an old fart ..... yet . What i am is a novice to boats . I spent years thinking about getting one , then did it . Before buying i posted on here . During buying on here . Since buying i ve virtually not left here ! A pattern will emerge soon after you buy your boat that essentially , for me it has been anyway like this : Problem , fix it , problem , fix it , problem , fix it ....... and on ad nauseum ! How do you the fix the problems ? By coming on here and requesting folk - strangers - to give you the the benefit of thier experience & expertise . Frankly i d be screwed without some of the generosity that people here have shown over and over . In a world where theres alot of selfishness and nastiness its a refreshing antidote & you 'd be pretty foolish to offend folk who , in future will turn out to be extremely helpful in many many ways . You ve been a bit brash , made a few unnecessary comments but don t go any further . Hold your hands up and tell folk you ve over reacted - it s cool as we ve all done it but don t make things worse . people here are genuinely looking to help . i for one know i d be completely overwhelmed by issues on my boat without help as problems tend to be difficult to fix , expensive ... or both . Don t blow the opportunity & good luck - its a big step your taking cheers
