  1. It was one of the most interesting and informative threads on here for a long long time. It might be contentious and a few people might even be disturbed by seeing how CaRT can sometimes behave (allegedly) and so would rather bury their heads in the sand and talk about flat batteries and canalside pubs, You don't have to read things that you find boring, but let others decide what we find interesting., ...........Dave

  5. I used to install non-switch mode Inverter / Chargers rated at 2500 watts these units need around 6 K watts from a generator for correct operation I believe that the sterling unit will be based around a significant transformer. So I guess you will require a generator of the same output will be required. If your Inverter / Charger was a switch mode unit this would be a different story. Keith

  6. Your Combi is a combined charger and inverter. When its supplied with AC from either of your generators the inverter shouldn't be on. Exceptions are if the incoming AC is above 255 volts when, to protect Combi and connected AC loads, it rejects it and automatically starts inverter as it would when switched on with no AC input. Regarding running from generators, your Combi's charger supplies up to 100 amps so don't underestimate the power needed from a generator. I have the same Combi which runs fine from a Kipor IG2600 (2300 watts continuous) running on LPG. Anything much smaller may not be up to it.

  7. 1) "through legal channels" - nonsense, a request doesn't have to ba made through legal channels. 2) "libellee" - nope, anybody can make a request to take down material. 3) The consequences of doing nothing aren't just legal. They can include your web host pulling the plug. 4) It doesn't matter whether Dan is OBLIGED to do something. He can choose to do something earlier, so as to avoid any risk.

  8. Since the original thread has been removed I'm not 100% certain, but I think it started when someone posted a press release from CaRT which appeared to give a very one-sided account of what had happened. Nigel responded with an alternative view. To my mind that is what a discussion forum is for. Why should he have to set up his own web site in order to respond?

  9. Mr Moore is providing this site with a great thread that is informing us of the alleged "shenanagins", " acting the goat " at the head of the waterways and if canal and river trust dont like what he is posting they will be in touch , pretty fast if they think what he says is untrue , for anyone to pretend they are not fully aware of what he is posting beggars belief , they monitor or pay people to monitor all media for anything that relates to them , they are aware and have not objected so please get the thread up again ,its not like the newspapers are going to keep us informed . edited .

  10. A very interesting thread but I quite understand why the moderators would wish to protect themselves and Daniel and the forum from any possibility of action. I honestly don't think anyone should be permitted to air their personal views, in the way Nigel has, on a website which he doesn't own - it is all too easy to publish (and for someone to copy and assert the source as CWDF) something that anyone reading the thread (known member or not) might object to. There has to be a balance struck as to what is just 'banter' and innocuous personal opinion and what can be seen as a soapbox for some fairly far ranging and interesting views whether they interest us or not and that's a difficult balancing act I am sure. I believe the Moderators and Daniel need to err on the side of caution - if the forum owner were taken to court there is, to the best of my knowledge, no money to defend a claim or pay damages. We have access to this huge amount of useful information which, we can if we wish, donate to to help with the running costs. If I have any criticism at all it is that those that agreed to hide and/or delete the thread should ideally have been more proactive in advising the forum members of their action rather than those who were following the thread to have to ask what had happened to it. If people like Nigel have a view they wish to promote in the way that has happened I believe that it should be hosted externally to the forum with perhaps, a link to that information. I'd be interested in what others may think bearing in mind it is a topic of great importance and interest.

  11. Greenie from me. In today's soundbite world a low boredom threshold is becoming more and more predominant. I too resent the idea that someone can dictate what is posted on this forum on the basis of their own interest, or lack of - as you say if you find it boring don't read it but how dare they presume that they should be able to deprive the rest of us who can read more than two lines of text at a time without snoozing and do find it interesting. I find Nigel's posts interesting and informative. Sorry - edited a couple of times cos I thought of something else I wanted to add

  12. Confused by the invalid comparison here. The choice isn't air or raw water cooling, its air or keel (via coolant) cooled. Thus you can have the quietness etc of water cooling without the hassle on a canal of raw water input. And also I can't think of a diesel engine on a canal boat that DOES rely on a computer - even the most modern ones are all pretty much indirect injection using a mechanical fuel pump - a tried and tested design. The other issue - battery starting - is a bit of a non-issue too.

  13. As always trying to take the morale high ground. Oh to be as virtuous! The plain truth is we all play by the rules of the forum and the mods and owners permission so if you don't like those conditions play elsewhere.

  15. Hi Paula, there is some rule about no PMs until you have posted at least 5 messages. Good luck with the central heating , it's a shame you aren't in the midlands, I suspect it could be done here cheaper. I'm sure you will find help here though.

  16. Hi Pelican, the maritime bunkering company I work for had a new barge built and delivered last year, and I`m hoping they will replace the 1961 built boat that I`m presently skippering with something more up to date, much as I love her. There is still work on barges, just not near home for me. Previously I converted a couple of tanker barges for general cargo, mostly sand and gravel, and then worked for Rix maritime on estuary and coastal tankers. After that I did a bit more inland work with Hargreaves on the coal pans, and then on to Humber Tugs for a short spell. In between whiles I was a dredger deckhand on the Humber, then Barrow, then Grand Canaria and Tenerife. After that I went to Maritime college at South Shields on a Slater Fund grant and got an OOW ticket, and then on to my present bunkering job where I have been for seven years. I`ve enjoyed most of the jobs enormously, and count myself lucky to have dropped into such a varied career.

  17. Yeah .... green ash is fine .... old or green, fit for a queen. Lady Celia Congreve says so .... The Firewood PoemBeechwood fires are bright and clearIf the logs are kept a year, Chestnut's only good they say, If for logs 'tis laid away. Make a fire of Elder tree, Death within your house will be; But ash new or ash old, Is fit for a queen with crown of gold Birch and fir logs burn too fast Blaze up bright and do not last, it is by the Irish said Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread. Elm wood burns like churchyard mould, E'en the very flames are cold But ash green or ash brown Is fit for a queen with golden crown Poplar gives a bitter smoke, Fills your eyes and makes you choke, Apple wood will scent your room Pear wood smells like flowers in bloom Oaken logs, if dry and old keep away the winter's cold But ash wet or ash dry a king shall warm his slippers by.
