  2. I can provide some info to balance all of this We have moored in Castlefield often, because as a widebeam the Rochdale 9 is the only exit route from our marina, which leads to Castlefield basin. There are boats which have lived in Castlefield for years, but they all know each other, and get along well. They cause no problems. There are a lot of tour boats operating on weekends, pumping out loud music as they take their hen parties etc cruising, but this is part of the ongoing charm of the basin. They have run those services for years, and again, everyone knows each other, and there is a lot of mutual respect between the boaters there. You then get a different crowd in the basin...all the boats which are "passing through". These boats often find that the elsan point is not up to standard, although quite honestly, there is a full marina/showers/toilets/elsans/diesel/gas/pumpout supplier 45mins down the Bridgewater (Stretford Marine). There are some permanent moorings on the Science Museam side, and these boaters tend to run generators at all hours. They have been there for years, and cause no real trouble. Occasionally when the Council has bands playing etc, they have to move their boats out of this area, and then they return. The guys in the 2 black boats, are decent, if left alone. One boat has had altercations with pubcrawlers in the past. Motley Crue owner is a genuine guy, and causes no problems. The troubles recently began, when 2 scrappy looking GRP boats (with windows missing, and basically inhabited by undesirable types) were kicked out of New Islington marina (on the Rochdale) for causing some problems. They moved down to the Bridgewater, and took up residence. Local boaters in Castlefield basin (after having a few pints), decided they needed to be encouraged to leave. One black boater rammed one of the boats a few times. It never sunk, and looked fine days later. (which surprised me). Weeks later, the GRP boats were still there, and I'm not surprised they were encouraged to leave the area if the boater pulled out weapons. Yes it makes a great story for a journalist, but it's a real non story really. Those boaters have been there for years and are actually doing Peel a favour by keeping Castlefield basin from becoming inhabited by hobos on boats who try and escape CRT by hiding on the Bridgewater. If Peel put up signs, nothing will change at all because there's actually no real issue on a widescale.

  3. That's what I do. The last time I tried the dance the oncoming boat seemed to panic and whether they forgot or not which way to move the tiller I don't know but they turned to port into me head on to which I had no option but to go instantly 'Hard 'a' port me hearty's' to pass them by a whisker on the wrong side, or I'd would probably have been rammed almost broadside into the bank. I would never do the close up dance unless I knew for certain which boat it was and who was steering it. And indeed the idiot that tried to go head to head with Dottyshirl's boat which was probably unknown to him, well he was the idiot in my opinion. ETA Sorry Tony this reply was meant for Ditchcrawler. Don't know what happened there.

  6. Not those on the boat no - but I am not on my boat today. The boat smoke alarm gets tested every time I cook! The CO alarm is tested each time I visit. I did test ours at home today though. ETA - I have found one of our alarms at home is not working with the test I have been reminded to to today. God forbid that we should have a fire between now and the weekend but if we had done so it would not have saved us. So do it today people!

  8. That reminds me of a time in Birmingham. Whilst cruising through we'd dropped a couple off to go somewhere and arranged to meet them on the other side of town. We arrived but they weren't to be seen so we stuck the pointy end into the bank to wait for them. Along came a trip boat loaded with fare paying passengers. As they passed they slowed and a voice bellowed out "are you stuck, do you need a pull?"

  10. I'm a beginer myself. And, have learned a little from the posts above. Just sometimes on this site a simple question can be asked and it seems there are a lot of keyboard warriors giving replies that would they do face to face? I dont know if they would. Its not the friendliest site and i refrain from asking simple questions as a result. P.s. sorry to interject on the thread please carry on without me!

  11. Is there anything on ebay that can be bought to test the acidity of some of the replies? it'd be useful sometimes on this site i think.

  12. I bought a similar one for a quid more, it's useful. It typically shows the voltage at .1 to .15 less than the batteries actually are. But once you know that you can allow for it. It's also useful to establish the lowest revs you can achieve maximum from your alternator when charging your batteries, as the voltage rises. Of course you could do this with a meter on the alternator, but this cheap bit of kit saves you the trouble. Well worth buying if you're new to boating (as I am) and want to get your head around things.
