  2. I used the word twat in post 122. I am a long, long way from being a thug, though I am not averse to using earthy language. Comes from a lifetime of working with real people

  3. Bank holiday in Manchester. Crowds looking on. Needing to move my boat to get water, empty toilets. When done, thought...why not let my boy put on a show...boost his confidence etc. Put him at the tiller and I went to stand on the bow...rope in hand. Didnt need to say a word....he cruised back under the white bridge in Castlefield, swung the boat around, brought the nose to a stop with 3ft to spare so I could jump off, and then swung the stern round a full 360 till he was moored up between two boats while I held the bow to the shore. Yes, it could have been a disaster, but it's good to let the yunguns do it once in a while, to impress the ladies (He's good in locks too..)

  4. Great night in the pub. Good beer, good food & good banter. 23:30pm - The 8 of us return to the boat. Port, Stilton & Black Pudding rations broken out. 1:00am - Time to retire... 8 people vying for use of the two toilets... 1:05am - Find my bunk - eventually.. someone has left their bag on it.. 1:10am - bang head bending over to untie shoelaces.. 1:15am - bang head again standing up.. 1:20am - finally in bed 1:25am - Sound asleep ! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 2:30am - Awake ! Stan in the next bunk is snoring for England 3:00am - Stan* stops snoring - Alan* in the bunk above starts snoring... 3:30am - Considering the novel use of a windlass as a blunt instrument. 3:45am - Alan stops snoring, drift off to sleep again... 4:30am - Awake ! I need the toilet as I couldn't get to one before bed 4:40am - back in bed - Now Dave* is snoring 5:00am - light outside - bl**dy birds singing and both Dave and Stan are snoring 5:45am - drift off to sleep again 6:15am - sound of an engine in the distance... getting louder.. boat passes, we bump against the piling 6:20am - Alan starts snoring and Stan gets up for the toilet. 6:30am - Stan back, Alan stops snoring and Pete M* Starts snoring 6:31am - Decide to find a Boots and buy some earplugs... drift off to sleep again... 8:00am - Middle of a dream when Alan stands on my hand getting down from his bunk. 8:01am - Stan and Dave pass fully dressed en route to getting under way 8:10am - Engine checked, started and we're off - and it's my turn to cook breakfast for 8. to be repeated on 7 consecutive nights ! And to think, when we go again in two weeks time, it will be our 22nd annual trip. * names not changed in order to inflict maximum embarassment !

  5. I suppose it depends on whether you think life is given to a canal by having lines of moored boats with or without occupiers, or whether it is given by having boats moving on the system. That said it does seem to be a bit quiet at the moment, but I can't see how that can relate to mooring issues.

  10. Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough! It isn't fit for humans now, There isn't grass to graze a cow. Swarm over, Death! The Slough Arm........whats the point? 5 miles of shallow ditch 5 miles of choking weed 3 aquaducts 5 miles of undisturbed waterway home to over 20 families 5 miles of waterway neglect 5 miles of kingfishers, terrapins and wildfowl 5 miles of history The last Canal to be dug excepting the MSC in the UK and all this forum has to say about the matter is 1 thread, The Arm is currently Landlocked as the 'Waterways' have 'filled in' a section prior to the dodgy bridge so that naughty boaters wont be tempted to try and pass the collapsed section of towpath. This is the death Knell of the Slough Arm. How may times have you cruised past the junction at Cowley peachey and declined the challenge. The Arm was due for dredging during this winter, It never happened despite being advertised by BW, Cart have no need to restore the navigation at bridge 2a as they can claim they have no money You have been warned, the Slough Arm is in danger of being lost, many of you would say 'good riddance' so be it.....what will follow Vote Ukip.........what? ......3 days late! ....Bugger!

  12. Great idea making boats a tourist attraction, be interesting to see the reaction of some boaters though. How many times have you read/heard boaters moan about being looked at and photographed? The "I'm moored here now so everyone stop using the towpath til I decide to leave" and "all put your cameras away while go through the locks" attitude always suprises me, people look at boats, they make them smile, they will look and take pictures, get used to it.

  15. Sad to say it isn't always hire boaters that are the numpties. In my experience the worste offenders are shiny 57 footers who venture out of the marina just once a year.

  16. I did once go all the way to the end of the Slough Arm. It is a nice enough canal but my enduring memory of the trip was of the miserable and aggressive people living on boats there. I travel around a lot and I have never seen so much wide-eyed staring and grumpy shouts to slow down. It seems that nothing moves there so when a boat does come past they are all in a state of shock. Perhaps they will welcome the conversion to a long thin lake.

  17. My guess would be that the boater who spent last night there have moved off, and the ones who'll spend tonight there hadn't yet arrived. Isn't it often the case with visitor moorings that they're a bit empty during the day -- that's when people are boating.

  20. More like visitors have got fed up with being unable to moor here because of the moorings always being full and have gone else where ! 14 skipper

  21. Hi all I never post on here but read very often. We are boat owners but only get to use our boat during school holidays and the odd weekend. I have become very disturbed by this thread. We were attracted to boat ownership on the canals because we saw it as a very relaxed and laid back holiday opportunity. To be honest, rightly or wrongly we look upon what we refer to as water gypsies as part of the colour and ambience of the canals. We pay licence and mooring fees for a marina berth and have no interest in what other people pay for their boat. I have never heard anyone in real life express any comment positive or negative towards said water gypsies. I think having read comments on this forum for past six years that the result of people jumping up and down about supposed infringements has only resulted in more rules being imposed. Who are the losers... Likes of me! Where before I could moor for 48 hours in a nice village now I can grab my shopping and a pint and then ...gotta go! No relaxation in that However the people you all seem to be irate at take no notice anyway.... It will always be the case. While you jump up and down and demand cart impose sanctions all it means is more rules and stricter at that for the law abiding. Reality is cart have no teeth... They erect signs saying 24 hours etc. that the likes of us obey, but in reality can't do anything about those that don't. I look upon on them as courtesy signs, but obey none the less. It sounds as if there is a war out there... Sorry if I upset anyone as I realise people have agendas and also that there are issues I don't know about... But hells teeth this is supposed to be leisure pursuit and we are trying to enjoy ourselves....haha

  22. No, I don’t intend to provide you with any information as to my personal life style and/or boating activities. Assume that I have none and it will make no difference to the correctness or otherwise of any information I impart. Nor do I expect that you will attempt to answer any of my own prior questions which you have ignored – they were intended to help anyone falling in with the same misconceptions [and yet having a genuine desire to learn the facts of the matter] to arrive at a better understanding. I engage on this Forum for my own purposes, which are limited to learning from others mostly, and occasionally to interject with pertinent information where I am in a position to do so. Sometimes I'll even venture to offer an opinion, and am interested to learn those of others who differ - if rationally expressed and based on knowledge and/or experience. Others also use the Forum, usefully and entertainingly: for debate, for badinage, for news and chat, for sharing life’s little moments and feelings, for comparing lifestyles and experiences; I don’t.
