  2. Why does he have to report it to a mooring warden before posting on here? Is that requirement in the site rules-guidelines?

  3. Trace the large wires from the alternator. On my engine, it too has a single alternator but 2 battery banks. There are two thick wires from the alternator (and several thinner ones). One goes to the domestic battery bank, and the other goes to a split charge relay (which is clipped to a bracket bolted to the side of the engine).

  5. Open the curtain just enough to see out of the window without exposing too much skin. Are the ducks walking on the water or swimming in it? If they are walking on the water its too cold, stay where you are. If they are swimming it might just be warm enough to get up and get some logs for the fire.....

  6. I don't really understand a lot of the logistics of what has gone on here or how the fact the boat now seems to be almost under is down to (or not down to) How RCR tried to rescue it. But I do have to say that when this all began, the fact that one of RCR's first actions was to take photos of the boat in this state and post it on their FB page for the marketing value behind it when it's not their boat and they were called out to help, seemed to me to be rather mercenary and slightly distasteful. Had the pics been posted as the 'before' shots after a successful rescue (which it now seems clear isn't going to happen) that would have been rather different. Just my personal opinion.

  8. Sorry gave duff info! Green light flashing system at rest. Green light steady banks connected. Adverc system I had worked with split diode not a relay to control the charging.

  13. On the Thames this year...several lock keepers said that the EA was amalgamating with CaRT in 2015...and running the Thames... Is that what you mean..? The keeper at Bolters..said that was fine..as he was retiring in 2014... Said it had been told to them at a 'meeting'..? Other Thames keepers..backed this up...

  15. Actually the biggest concern I have mooring in 'dodgy' areas is that someone will steal my dog, which would give far more grief than if they 'just' broke into the boat.

  17. Hey Sal, We thought that a widebeam would be necessary when we first went onto narrowboats. They seemed tiny at first. But after a hire we realised how comfy narrow ones can be. And after a year aboard, we wouldn't really want to be on a wide one. Go and poke your nose around lots of boats and enjoy the idea that one could become yours. Then you'll start to get a feel for what boat would suit you. The boats that we found most suitable for living aboard came in about £30-£40k and were between 5 and 15 years old. Depending on how shiny you want your boat, it would be very possible to find a really nice liveaboard for half your budget i reckon. Good luck, i hope it all works out great for you...
