  4. Me too. I'm travelling up to Braunston Friday evening and could help when I get there, or sometime on Saturday. Or Sunday! Subject to avoiding the times of the historic boat parades in which I believe Reginald is expected to take part.

  7. By badsey at 2012-06-21 This bag of rubbish ws left yesterday at Hillmorton Locks under the sign that asks people NOT to do so and directs them to the nearby rubbish bins. For years we have taken it on ourselves to remove rubbish that boaters dump all over the site because they can't be bothered to walk to the bins. Since I put the sign on the wall last month, this is the first bag that has been dumped. When I looked inside I found a name and telephone number on a document. I can't describe my feelings of rage when the identity revealed was that of an early IWA member and speaker on canal subjects who has been decorated by The Queen and currently Chairing an Olympic Committee. At finding that this blatant anti-social behaviour seemingly involved a supposed leading member of the community, a short internet search quickly revealed full details of the person and I sent him an email. He has not replied and so my question to you all is:- What do you think I should do with this information?

  8. Coming to this discussion from a previous career as an airport fireman, so I've had some practise! There is every kind of extinguisher available but some at silly money! The ones that are normally fitted are easy and cheap to source and fit. HOWEVER it's likely that you will not get the best from one in case of need simply because of lack of familiarity. Buy a few extinguishers and play somewhere safe! As a rule of thumb a fire the size of a waste paper bin should go out easily, one the size of a dustbin could take some work to extinguish, and one bigger than a skip is a matter for the pros! However if you are alert and attend quickly then lots of fair size fires can be caught at the beginning and sometimes it may save the boat.

  12. My feeling is that what you have done may be enough. He now knows, whether he responds or not, that he has been caught red handed. That in itself may prick his conscience enough to change his behaviour, particularly if he knows that you are being discreet about it. If he doesn't change his behaviour and gets caught again that is the time to go public in my opinion. It may be that if he persists then that is entirely up to him and not your responsibility

  14. So, from your first reference I am told that my batteries are fully charged when current falls to 2%, which for me is about 9A. Seems a far cry from 0.7A which is actually fully charged! From your second reference I get that the final fully charged current may increase as the batteries age, which is fair enough. However I can't help thinking that if I applied the 1st reference and always stopped charging at 9 amps, it would not be long before my bats were losing capacity with ref. 2 kicking in!

  15. I have indeed read what ex-taxman says. It is certainly not true that the mere fact of making a "profit" on one or two transactions means it is certainly a trade. There is much more to be considered than that. It is not an unexpected response from an ex-taxman. I agree that HMRC usually takes the view "If in doubt the answer's "yes", it is taxable". However, I regard part of my role as defending the innocent from the bully boy tactics of some HMRC officers. I usually find that a vigorous defence soon puts off the chancers at HMRC who try to get a quick victory by coming on strong. I cannot therefore agree that the HMRC view prevails where there is doubt. I have to say I love being as aggressive to them as some of them are to some tax payers! All this assumes of course that you have a case to argue. Hence the need for advice, a matter on which everyone agrees.
