  1. Just seen this - Enjoy An American photographer on vacation was inside a church in Oldham taking photographs when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on the Wall with a sign that read '£10,000 per call'. The American, being intrigued, asked a priest who was strolling by what the telephone was used for. The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for £10,000 you could talk to God. The American thanked the priest and went along his way. Next stop was in Manchester. There, at a very large cathedral, he saw the same golden telephone with the same sign under it. He wondered if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in Oldham and he asked a nearby nun what its purpose was. She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for £10,000 he could talk to God. 'O.K., thank you,' said the American. He then travelled to Blackburn, Burnley, Rochdale Littleborough, and Todmorden In every church he saw the same golden telephone with the same '£10,000 per call' sign under it. The American, upon leaving Lancashire decided to travel to Yorkshire to see if Yorkshiremen had the same phone. He arrived in Sheffield, and again, in the first church he entered, there was the same golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read '50 pence per call.' The American was surprised so he asked the priest about the sign. 'Father, I've travelled all over Lancashire and I've seen this same golden telephone in many churches. I'm told that it is a direct line to heaven, but in Lancashire the price was £10,000 per call. Why is it so cheap here?' The priest smiled and answered, 'You're in Yorkshire now, son ... it's a local call.'

  3. At the risk of pocking a hornets nest this gets my full support . I have no issue with genuine Continuous Cruiser's, indeed I may become one after I retire.

  4. We've found sticking the dog on top of the stove creates a pelt-aire effect. Placing joss sticks at regular intervals down the boat demonstrated conclusively that the air expelled while it howled managed to get right down to the back of the boat.

  6. Apologies for being pedantic but domestic use is NOT duty free - Red diesel and domestic heating oil has a duty element of around 11p. Tcehnically it's known as a rebated oil. Most of the objectors on these fora and others are probably not aware of this point. To people not aware of the issue think that boaters are getting away with cheaper fuel rather than using the Directive literally - which is what HMRC did in the first place. It takes 4 -5 hours daily to charge my batteries and I don't see why I should pay extra duty to do that.

  9. In the spirit of being fair Dave (advocate for all boaters) It may be the case that the OP genuinely doesn’t realise how contentious this issue can be and is unsure of how things should work. Their first port of call was to ask the questions, thus outing their intentions. Devious? no, ignorant (in the true sense) yes. Let's help them like a good possible future council rep should eh? Ruby, as others have said, if you want to be around town then you should either get a mooring or increase the range of your cruising to include London sometimes. Use the search facility and type in continuously cruising, there is plenty to give you an idea. Don't be put off; always best to ask first in my opinion.
