  1. There are some really nasty, vicious characters on this forum and I hope I never have the displeasure of meeting them in real life - god only knows what they're like and what they're capable of in reality. As many of you will remember I asked for help about a joiner to put in two walls in the boat. I had a PM on here from someone suggesting someone they know who is "Great at boat fitting and is a qualified boat fitter. You will need a boat fitter as it is a complex job that a normal joiner or carpenter may have difficulty achieving" This indiviidual asked me that if I could be a bit more flexible with my timeframes, he would ask this boat fitter for me , to do the work. I replied and told him that we are more than flexible, however we are looking to move in to the boat in a month's time so need to get a move on with many things. This is the reply I received: Hi again, yes of course I have his name and number. He is a tradesman that I have a lot of respect for. I won't insult him by giving his details to some one who has no idea how complex building a boat is. I apologise if I seem blunt. The guy I was suggesting to you is a top quality boat fitter. Give him the time he will build you a fantastic boat. Unfortunately with your time scale you are going to be lucky to get something marginally better than a garden shed fit out. Apologies again Nowhere in my posts or my messages to ths individual did I ASK for a boat fitter to fit out the entirety of my boat. TWO WALLS. "I won't insult him by giving his details to some one who has no idea how complex building a boat is." says the user. So is every boat builder insulted everytime someone buys a boat but didn't know how to fit it out themselves so they paid someone else (them) to do it? Is a plumber unbelievably p*ssed off because he's had a call for someone to fix some leaky pipes? Is a builder really annoyed that the person who wants a house can't build it themselves? Perhaps a mechanic wants to punch that customer in the face who needs a service - after all you're insulting him because you don't know HOW COMPLEX A CAR SERVICE IS. ARROGANT INDIVIDUALS ON HERE WHO PROVIDE ZERO HELP AND ARE ONLY HERE TO ANNOY AND AGGRAVATE NEED TO BE BANNED. I was going to pay the guy to do a job..... money is money right?! Or am I missing something here?

  2. ... With the spider of doom. It was huge and a sprinter but was not going to move into a place I could splat it without risk of it getting me. I couldn't get off the bed, it had me trapped. I bashed the ceiling to make it run. It didn't. I bashed the wall. Nothing. So we waited. "Mano i arachno. " I needed to make it move but not fall but I had nowt to squirt it with. Then I remembered my asthma inhaler. Two squirts and it barely even sneezed. Thank goodness it wasn't my old steroid inhaler, it might have given it muscles and an anger management problem. After bashing the hell out of the blinds the waft of air made it run. It was me or it. I hit it with a book. It was cross but not dead. I think it read the reviews on the back cover. I squashed it with my slipper and finally it scrunched itself into a podule and dropped to the floor with a splot. I can never wear that slipper again. And never read that book again. And will have to pluck up some courage in the morning to step over the zombie. Tonight: Adrenalin thru the roof. No sleep for me till morning.

  3. on a serious note, you seem to have no inclination or ability to hold reasonable debate. Please do change your signature, it is a contradiction of your true beliefs

  4. I has just taken us 5 1/2 hours to descend the Atherstone flight (normally we do it in 2 1.4 to 2 1/2hrs). We arrived at 9:30 to find ourselves 6th in the queue and started into the top lock by 11 meanwhile the queue had stretched back to the previous bridge. Progress through the flight was glacial with further queues at every lock , sometimes there was now where to go on exiting the lock. When we finally got to lock 11 we found that only 1 upper paddle was working sothe lock took 9 minutes to fill. So was that he cause of all the delay - No I don't think so but it really didnt help and it been like that for some time I'm told. I rather suspect the limited opening times had an effect by concentrating the traffic. And why is this "water saving" measure still in effect when the summit pound has been at normal level for the past 10 days and water was going over the spilways down the flight. So given the two issues were any BW bods about to speed traffic and save water - no not a soul in sight. It's about time BW stopped fiddling about with sculptures and fiddling about with what to call themselves when they get privatised ( sorry third sectored)and actually got on with running the waterways. Regards TC

  5. I take pleasure in leaving my waste with McDonalds. A Big crap, or if you get stopped on the way in, tell them you'll order on the way back, A Big crap with lies! I hardly ever use the shower block in Brentford, it seems to have gone down hill since the office went, and there always seems to be a corn plaster on the floor!

  7. I know of an ex working boat with a very well experienced boater who can give me many years of boating and a few of life who displays an L plate on his boat as he says you can always learn something.

  10. Sounds like someone who has no idea about the simplicity of fitting out a boat, to a 'qualified boatfitter'. Tradesmen make their money because customers don't have the time, inclination or ability to understand the complexity of the trade in question. I think someone has lost a tradesman some paid work. He can't have that much respect for him.

  11. More moorings for people who want to and or are interested in boats yes. as a solution to the housing crisis, no. I would like to see more money invested into the causes of homelessness. I would also like to see investment in the existing empty buildings that seem to be everywhere. If I had the choice I would also put pressure on the 2nd home owners who visit their country homes for 3 months of the year. I just don't see that boats are a viable solution due to the cost or upkeep and the rapid deterioration.

  12. Hi All I am pleased to see that the other thread about this topic has now been locked. With this new thread, please can we try to stick to the point? Thanks. It seems that the present Government is keen to encourage more people to consider living on boats, both on the inland waterways and in coastal harbours. ("More" - more than the number of people who do so at present, which the RBOA reckon is about 25,000 people at present if one counts all of the harbours and inland waterways.) To this end, the Government intends to relax all the existing regulations that tend to discourage the idea that people should live afloat permanently. How feasible is this idea, do we think, please? I've got a lot of comments to make as far living aboard boats in coastal harbours is concerned because I used to do that myself and so I know a fair amount about it from that point of view. However I don't know anything about the inland waterways apart from the fact that I've walked along a few towpaths, which is why I want to know what the members of this forum think about this idea, please. Please can we AVOID getting bogged down in bickering about which people might form this enlarged population of liveaboards. Let's try to stick with the principle only - the idea itself - in this thread, please. QUESTION: If you live on a boat on an inland waterway and you have a "residential mooring licence" to do so, what sort of protection does that afford to the licencee? Does it include some sort of security of tenure, for instance, or is it simply a temporary right in return for temporary fee, please? Thanks Gill
