  1. Very well by that definition I concede that my remark pointed out by Gibbo was mocking in an indirect way so I was not speaking plainly in that instance. Speaking plainly then - of course I don't need an answer to my last question. It is obvious what the answer is. The point I am making is that Gibbo does belittle people, especially when they say something he does not agree with. For him to say this "But this entire thread, as I see it, is one perfect example of a huge pile of big boys ganging together and letting one person (OP) "have it" for daring to make a suggestion." and "I don't think I've ever seen such an example of bullying since primary school." is utter hypocrisy given his own record. Gibbo, not long ago, said that I must have been given a proper kicking when I was at school - this in response to my challenging what, in my opinion, was a particularly inappropriate joke. Yes I got a kicking from time to time and do you know why? It was because I used to challenge bullies. I'm still doing it. In my opinion Gibbo is exactly what he accused others of in the post I have quoted. He is a bully and I will challenge him directly. I have done so in the past and paid the price - I expect to pay the price again now. It amazes me that bullies are rarely aware that that is what they are.

  5. All that "HD Ready" means is that if you give it an HD source it will display it. "Full HD" means that it will display that HD source in full HD (1920x1080 pixels), which an "HD Ready" set won't necessarily be capable of. Some TVs have Freeview HD tuners built in. If it doesn't shout the fact loudly then it doesn't. Tony

  7. Exactly why do you feel you can make snide remarks but when someone gives it you back you start crying?

  10. I appreciate the videos and the work Tone is doing to find and provide links to them, half the new threads are now single links to Pathe films. How about starting a British Pathe newsreel thread and putting each video as a separate posting? That way they could all be found without creating half a million separate threads Richard

  11. Haven't you discovered that discussing real boating issues doesn't work on this forum? The discussions on petty things are much more popular. Sue

  18. OP may not be the most popular member on here. With a bit of imagination stretching it's even possible that he's more unpopular than me. But this entire thread, as I see it, is one perfect example of a huge pile of big boys ganging together and letting one person (OP) "have it" for daring to make a suggestion. I do see thinly veiled threats. I also see moderators ignoring them. I don't think I've ever seen such an example of bullying since primary school. It's happened in the past on this forum, and on those occasions the thread has been locked and the perpetrators' posts removed. There was one old regular (thankfully no longer around) who seemed to be able to say what the f*ck he wanted without reprimand but when anyone dared to give him his same treatment back they were soon shown the whip. I often wondered whether there was a sexual relationship involved to result in such favouritism. Do I sense some negative-favouritism in this case?

  22. Clearly the choice of heating depends on the way the boat is to be used. For me I have chosen gas ALDE for the following reasons; The boat will be in a marina in the winter with 240v and the Alde will take the 240v to heat the water for the central heating rads I can run the heating on a timer so it comes on and goes off when I want When not hooked up, low power draw, silent, maint free (they claim), small & reliable. No more expensive to buy than the other options. I will not have a coal stove on the boat because I dont like the mess in tending and cleaning it and storing the bags, nor do I like the idea of a fire on the boat, there is always the risk of something nasty happening If I did not chose Alde then the next choice would be the oil dripper as has been suggested, and last by a mile is Mikuni, Eberspacher etc I estimate gas will cost about 25% more than diesel which on face value is a lot but in the overall cost of running a boat is acceptable I should also add that I will have a heat exchanger to heat the radiators when the engine is running Charles

  24. Bear in mind, narrowboats tend to average around 30 K for a good one and then go up from there. You don['t have that much to spend so you have two options. You can buy an eighties second hand narrowboat cheap but experience tells me such boats come with some wear and tear. A surveyor would more often than not find varied degrees of pitting and recommend remedial work and such work isn't for the DIY enthusiast. Then you have the second option, to buy a shell and fit it out. I knew someone who bought a shell for 10 K and took things from there. Alternatively sometimes you see old boats that have been gutted, replated and ready to fit out and they go around 9 K. Yes, it's doable but make sure you get good advice from the outset. Also consider fibreglass as an option. You can get a decent fibreglass boat from 6 K upwards and many of these have inboard engines and are easy to maintain.
