Water Pump Mounting Point on BMC 1800

Note the hole (about half inch diameter) to the right, just above one of the mounting holes. This connects back to the hole at the base of the thermostat housing, and seems to result in flow bypassing the normal route, until the plate on the base of the thermostat fitted lowers, as the thermostat opens.
