Unfortunately with the leakage problems through Lock 69, apart from letting boats through that where stuck in the pounds, we have had to keep this closure in place on Lock 67 & 68 to help retain water as much as possible. We are currently looking at plans to make urgent repairs to lock 69 which will be assessed during the week, along with how we will maintain some sort of passage until these interim repairs can be completed.

Navigation is closed between Lock 67 and Lock 68 on the Trent & Mersey Canal due to the paddles being left open, resulting in low water levels. Our local team are aware of the situation and are currently on site, feeding water down to the affected area to restore water levels. Unfortunately levels have not restored sufficiently and we must keep the closure in place, we hope that it will recover during Saturday so we can open Sunday morning 26/07/2026. a team member should be there for 9.00am to review situation and open if levels have recovered sufficiently."

Somebody's noticed that Lock 69 is knackered. Luckily, it's the only one on the system that's got a leakage problem, so there's no need to worry about any of the others. I doubt they'll ever give us that app to report problems, myself, because what's the point?

And before Ian goes on the attack, it's not CRT inefficiency. There's been no money for decades to do anything but stopgap, emergency fixes, which, basically, are now all starting to fail at once. Still, it makes boating an adventure again, just like in Rolt's day...

Bridgewater Canal Breach

Quick info, the Bridgewater has breached near Ye Olde No 3 at some point this morning. The canal company are aware and have been putting stop planks in place to close the canal at Agden for draining and inspection.

The levels elsewhere are at the moment OK, but not sure for how long...

Reservoir holdings feeding the Northampton Arm are lower than normal for the time of year. This is a result of the prolonged dry weather, water loss through evaporation during the heat wave, and, in some instances, paddles being left open or leaks in the infrastructure.

To help us conserve water and maintain safe navigation, we will be closing the Northampton Arm to passage from 3pm on Monday 27th July. Lock 1 and 12 will be locked.

The situation is being continually monitored and reviewed; however, we encourage all boaters currently on the Arm to consider moving to the main line while navigation remains possible. We will update this notice as the situation develops.

I have just received an email from CRT cancelling our booked passage down into Liverpool Docks. Apparently there is green blue algae in one of the docks. This is in addition to the closure later in May for scheduled work in the docks. I know this is beyond CRT’s control, but having a mooring on the Leigh Branch is a bit restricting at the moment (as well as last year). The Bridgewater breach, regular closures of the Wigan Flight, the Leigh Branch breach last autumn (another cancelled Liverpool Link trip) and the uncertainty of water levels and closure of the Macclesfield is all very depressing.

I've signed up for CRT alerts as we are due to make the marina change journey next week... since then i keep getting pings by alerts of trees blocking canals on the Grand Union... is the midlands in some odd heavy wind tunnel? are they wilting in the heat? i'd expect it in heavy rain/wind.....

Just sat at the northbound tunnel entrance. Got here this afternoon to be told the locks immediately after the tunnel (red bull locks?) are now closed, for review Friday 17th lunchtime, due to low water levels.

passage booked through tunnel tomorrow morning then plan to hold at the Macclesfield canal to see if they open Friday afternoon or Saturday.

Bosley flight closed too so nowhere to go and moving the boat onto the Leeds Liverpool Rufford Branch

We have attended Lock 2 this morning to further inspect the lock beam. The beam is rotten and therefore the lock is inoperable.

Until we are able to arrange a repair, Braunston Lock flight will need to close.

Hillmorton Middle Locks - damage to gate

Came up through Hillmorton Locks today and the left hand lock of the middle pair is out of action due to damage to one of its bottom gates. Looks like it might have taken a hit from a boat as you can see from my photo.

The lockies on the first lock pair never even mentioned it, so it was a surprise when we reached the middle pair and it was too late by then to ask.

I don’t recall getting a notice about this and I can’t find any mention on the website. Anyone know what happened? Could cause some serious delays over the summer if they don’t get it fixed.

Another ambivalent stoppage notice from CRT. The original stoppage onky mentions a towpath closure on the 3rd June, but yesterday's says "The navigation and towpath between Bridge 134 and Bridge 135 at Red Bull on the Trent & Mersey Canal remain closed.
This is to allow the safe removal of a sunken boat near Lock 45 (Kent's Lock). The work is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 3 June between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm."

Which implies it's currently shut today, Tuesday, and will stay shut until the job's done. As I need to get back on to the Macc, this isn't terribly helpful.

If anyone's been down that way, I'd appreciate some info. In the meantime, I'll email CRT .

Obstruction stopping the gate from closing properly, CRT supposedly aware and on way today.

We were at Grendon services when a boat who’d just come down was telling anyone who was heading up.

Flight was ok when we came down between 7am - 10am, apart from bloody hot and short of water in usual pounds (i got stuck on the bottom coming out of 7).

Navigation between Lock 1 and Lock 12 will remain closed due to the damage to the tailgates at Lock 12.Our reactive team are scheduled to begin repairs to the tailgates during the week commencing Monday 25 May. We are offering an assisted booked passage which will be operate on Thursday 21 May only, starting at 9:00am

If you would like to book the assisted passage, please contact our North West Customer Service team on 0303 0404 040. Please note that advance booking is required, as there is a limit to the number of boats that can be safely assisted through the locks while repairs are pending. Nanney's Bridge Middlewich Branch

CRT have closed the canal and towpath at Nanney's Bridge no8 on the Middlewich Branch of the Shroppie. A bus struck the bridge on the 3rd May and their latest update says they will review the closure on 15th May.
The towpath has been fenced off and there are signs which say canal closed. There is minor damage to the parapet on the non towpath side and it's not even over the water.
The road is still open and most boaters are ignoring the signs and passing through.
It's ridiculous to take so long to even assess the damage. As it's on the four counties and it's now May, they or the highways should really be dealing with this quicker.
