NEW FORUM SOFTWARE

Welcome to the updated version of Canal World.

Why did we change the site?     We had to update the site for a number of reasons:

  • The discussion forum software we previously used was initially released over 5 years ago. While it has been maintained over the years, it's no longer optimised for use with current technology.
  • The dissussion forum software previously used is no longer supported by our vendor. This would make it difficult to receive support should we encounter any problems. It is important that we keep up to date
  • Mobile browser support was very limited. The new version will bring many improvements for mobile users
  • The new version of the forum software includes many security and feature enhancements.

Is there anything I need to be aware of?

  • Members must now login using their display name. Most members already did this, however some members used a separate 'login name' which was not the same as their display name.
  • A number of significant design and functionality changes have been introduced including the search functionality. We recommend taking some time to familiarise yourself with this. (more on this below)

We look to make continual improvements based on user feedback where possible.

Where has the View New Content (VNC) function gone?

The VNC functionality has been replaced by a new concept named "Activity Streams". More info here.

What if I have a problem?      Please submit a topic/post in our Technical Support forum or either PM one of the site staff members or email sitestaff@canalworld.net
What if I want to give some feedback?    We welcome feedback and request you submit a topic in the Feedback & Suggestions forum.
Technical Details: New version of IPS Community Suite v4.1.18.2 , previous version v3.4.8 (patched).

After extensive planning/testing & infrastructure upgrades, the site upgrade itself took 6 hours to complete and was performed on a dedicated server comprising of; 32GB memory, Intel Xeon CPU, 3x SSD hard drives, 350Mbit/s internet connectivity, running CentOS 7.2 Linux operating system. The significantly more powerful server was set up and deployed by us specifically to facilitate the upgrade and to enable us to complete it as quickly as possible. Some may be interested to know that the upgrade work was carried out remotely from a 55ft Narrowboat during "Storm Doris" where 94mph wind gusts were reported.
