About the Site
Canal World Discussion Forums were
conceived as a smaller part of a much larger site
started in March 2001. The rest of the site didn't
really take off, so following a large systems fault in
October 2004, the decision was made to turn the site
primarily into the discussion forums that operate
today.
The site now has over 1300 members
who contribute regularly in lively discussions. The
site also has a links directory containing over 100
links submitted by members, a photo gallery containing
over 700 images and allows members to interact via
private messaging facilities. Members have joined the
site from all around the world. We have an average of
150 new posts per day and an average of 1400 visits
each day.
The site is operated on a
not-for-profit basis. Until now, all finance has been
provided by the site host. We are now look at ways to
generate income to assist in the payment of hosting
and support fees.
In order to participate in
discussions and use the advanced facilities such as
private messaging or the photo gallery, members first
need to register. This is free! All we ask is that
members provide a genuine e-mail address which will be
validated as part of the registration process. Your
details will not be passed on to any other
organisation or agency, and you will only receive
e-mails that you elect to receive from the forum
system. Members also need to agree to the forum rules
and guidelines
One registered, you simply click on
the topic that you wish to read, and then simply click
'add reply' to add your comments to the discussion. If
you wish to start a new topic, simply click 'new
topic' in the relevant forum, and follow the
instructions on screen.
In short, a free registration opens
up full access the whole of the site. You will be able
to:
-
Reply to existing topics
-
Create new topics
-
Access and contribute to the
photo gallery
-
Access the Private Messaging
Facilities
-
E-mail other members (where
allowed)
-
Become a part of the community,
make new friends and contacts.
The site crew are members of the
forum community who assist in running the site. They
have the ability to edit/close/delete posts that don't
follow the forum rules & guidelines. They also
assist in dealing with member queries and technical
support issues. Each member of the site crew can be
identified by the blue 'Site Crew' badge next to their
posts. Site crew members are recruited by the site
host as and when needed. Please don't apply for a role
which is not advertised.
If you are having difficulties with
your account, or posts in general click here to
contact a member of the site crew.
If you have any questions of
comments about the site, then please contact Jon,
either via Private Message or e-mail (see profile).
We have just moved to a new site
server. This has opened a few doors to us. Some ideas
floating around at the moments are allowing members to
host their own 'Blogs', offering Canal World related
merchandise, offering an 'enhanced membership' option
for a nominal fee, allowing members to do even more
with their account. All these aspects are strictly in
the planning stage, and may or may not happen.
