  1. I was pre-warned when ascending Lock 25W some years ago. I opened the top gate and noticed the pound above was low so I walked up to lock 26W and checked the level of the pound above. When I returned I asked my other half why the pound was now empty and she was going back down in the lock. The paddle had blown and fortunately she didn't try to exit the lock or it would have been Goodnight Midnight.
  2. On the HNC when going up I always look to see if the lock is full and the pound above has plenty if water. If not I push the boat out and if it scrapes the cill it's hard astern. Leaking bottom gates plus low water levels above are a red flag potential disaster. Happened a few times over the past years when boats have stuck on the top cill and the water leaked out of the bottom gates. Glug, glug!
  3. Basically as @IanD mentioned Manchester us a dump now. Castlefield used to a be a very good overnight mooring, but quite scruffy and usually full now. The nicest moorings are at the top of the nine just around the corner on the Ashton. Islington is okay but £25 a night last time I stayed there. I find Birmingham to be rather pleasant to moor. The approaches are a bit grim but I never had a problem. Both cities have lots to offer but moorings in Birmingham feel far safer.
  4. Good moorings and welcome at the various boat clubs along the Nene (Nen in Northampton). Last year we were stuck on red boards for a week at Oundle BC and they were most helpful and there's a washing machine at the marina. You may also find a dumpy screwdriver helpful for those lock wheels although at least one was a real chore. Annoyingly, when coming upstream, some boaters don't follow the rules and leave the guillotine gate down when exiting the top gates. You then have to wind the gate up, down and up again. If you are really unlucky you may even meet @matty40s of this parish 😆😆😆 If you want adventure try crossing the Wash from Boston to Wisbech. Longer boats can only pass through Grand Sluice at Boston for a few minutes when the tide makes a level with the Witham so going from Wisbech to Boston needs careful planning. A pilot is more or less essential and Daryl Hill is your man.
  5. Come oop Norf and see how you get on and it's not just Rochdale Summit wolves to worry about.

  7. Should be in the Guiness Book of Records.
  8. I still don't see an option to book the Liverpool Link on the C&RT bookings page.
  9. Naw, he only uses it to fry his chips and to wax his beard 😆
  10. In that case if you can't get into Castlefield, there is one half decent mooring below the Rochdale bottom lock on the left or visitor moorings under the railway bridge - although I never fancied them. I believe Marple flight is still closed so the Ashton is out and not worth the effort to travel up and back down the Rochdale 9. If you wish to leave your boat for a couple of days I would look at Stretford marina or Sale Cruising Club. Further out Lymm Cruising Club are very accommodating.
  11. CCers are going to have to pay the increased rate through the surcharge. No surcharge would just be a lot easier to manage and C&RT would get more from license increases.
  12. I think you will be proved correct when the ban on woodburning (maybe even all solid fuel?) in urban areas comes in. Does the ULEZ affect boats in London now or is that just for car emmissions? Can't see the NBTA accepting £12 per day to burn wood. Fortunately we live in the moors and when we cruise in summer we don't use the stove, but I can see issues ahead for boat diesel engines and central heating units as the government forces the green agenda upon us. Ingnoring of course the 18000 planes emitting crap at any one time and the pollution from destroying Ukraine and Gaza. @MtB is absolutely on the money. The planet will survive long after us beans have killed ourselves off for a quick profit. I wonder how long nature would take to reverse global warming? PS Was going to say "Can't see the NBTA accepting £12 per day to burn wood and move to the next bridge" but they don't move do they? 😆
  13. The whole surcharge idea is a dog's dinner and will cause more problems than it fixes. It's going to be a nightmare to administer so I just cannot see how it will be cost-effective. It would be so much easier to manage and better for the budget if we all paid the same (higher) license fees. I suspect surcharges will be ditched before 5 years are up. About time Parry & Co were ditched too.
