  1. Hmmm trouble is is that the present owner has just had the boat reblacked and surveyor did the survey while it was out of the water. Therefore I don't really know if it was blacked really well in the pits or not. The pitting is all one side which I guess is why the surveyor thinks it was was moored always in the same direction!
  2. I think the surveyors logic is that if I reblack every year then it won't get worse but to re-black every year seems like a bit of an expensive hassle to me!
  3. waterline pitting - surveyor says it is from the boat being moored against metal in one direction for a long time
  4. I've just recieved a hull survey for a boat I'm about to buy and the suveyor says he believes that the boat should be re-blacked every year by hand because there are pits (1.5 to 1.8mm). The pits were there last time the boat was surveyed in 2002 and haven't got any deeper but there are now more of them. I am just wondering whether it is quite normal for a surveyor to be over-cautious and recommend yearly re-blacking or if I should be concerned. The survey also says if the pitting isn't arrested then the boat will need replating in a few years - how muchish does it cost to replate a 50ft boat? Is it worth getting a partial re-plate to prevent having to re-black every year? Any advice much appreciated!
