  1. I had a chance to sit down with Campbell Robb at the Crick Show, and the interview is out now in the latest episode of my podcast. If you’ve not heard him speak, I reckon it’s worth a listen. You can find it here. This link will detect what device you’re using and take you to either Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or a web page. Alternatively, search for The Water Road on all podcast platforms, including Amazon Music, Audible, Deezer, Pocket Casts, OverCast, Castro, GoodPods, PodChaser etc.
  2. by Leek, do you in fact mean Froghall? I mean Leek tunnel although narrow is actually quite tall; not to mention that it’s a nice place to go and plenty of people go there.
  3. Also, lock 12 is the bottom lock so the pound below it stretches for 8.5 miles to Hall Green — so if it was that low surely the whole canal would have been shut.
  4. I wonder if you’re the boat with the Welsh place name on it that’s nose to nose with us at the Cape…. We came down Hatton today.
  5. This episode of my canal-based podcast is about pets on board, and has an interview with a cat owner. Might give you a few pointers. Click here to listen. This link will detect what device you’re on, and take you to either Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or a web page. AlternativeLy search for The Water Road wherever you get your podcasts. As well as Apple and Spotify, it’s also on Amazon Music, Audible, Deezer, GoodPods, OverCast, Castro, PodChaser, Pocket Casts — in fact pretty much everywhere.
  6. We have an in-line 4ft double (which is a small double) and just pull the mattress out from under the gunwales by a few inches. Our current boat also has a pull out section of base to give it a bit more support; the previous boat didn’t, but it was still fine. We had the option of a drop-in section of mattress to make it 5ft, but tbh the join is more problematic than a narrow bed if you ask me!
  7. I hope you’re also going to do the Leek arm, which I think is a really pretty bit of canal. When you’re at the end, if you have time there’s a nice walk following the feeder from Rudyard Lake. If you’re interested in Cheddleton Flint Mill, in an early episode of my podcast last year I spoke to one of the trustees about it. Link here.
  8. Four years later — is this still a recommended mooring, for breaking the journey from Minworth to the middle of Birmingham? We’d normally have done the whole lot in one go, but we have a puppy to consider now (not that there appears to be any grass at Aston Business Park…).
  9. No we stopped south of Bridge 104, which is where trane also suggested, near the winding hole. In Stoke itself we’ve stopped many times at Festival Park near the Toby Carvery, and although that’s on from Etruria Junction there’s a winding hole there so it would be a reasonable stop. It’s nice by Engine Lock on the Caldon too; we’ve stopped both above and below it. From Aston I’d do Barlston/Br 104 one night then Engine Lock the next.
  10. I believe it’s because the full mile stones measure from Marple Junction, but the other side says Hall Green which is an extra quarter mile. So the half mile stones take that extra quarter mile into account.
  11. It’s a mile and a half back to the full length winding hole, so that would be quite a reverse.
  12. The latest episode of my canal-based podcast, The Water Road, is an interview with Nick Atty about how CanalPlanAC came about, how it works, and what he’d like to do with it in the future. Click here to listen. This link will detect what device you’re on. Apple devices will be taken to Apple Podcasts, Android will go to Spotify, and desktops will go to a webpage. Alternatively, search for The Water Road wherever you get your podcasts. We’re on Apple, Spotify, Amazon Music, Audible, Deezer, and a load of smaller platforms including Pocket Casts, OverCast, Castro, Good Pods, Pod Chaser etc.
  13. I believe Andrew has finished at least one of these boats already, so he would definitely be a good person to talk to.
  14. An estate agent was showing someone this bungalow when we boated past in October.
  15. Very sad to read this. It was always fascinating chatting to Ken; last saw him at the Crick Show last year, where he was once again talking about retiring although he never seemed to be able to actually do it! Thoughts with Julia and the family.
