Do you get the Smartbank settings when you go through the setup? Does the green LED when connected work? IIRC, the "verbose" setting enables the "con" and "dis" messages.

Some of the Beta engines are Isuzu based. Might be worth speaking to them, as they stock senders and gauges. There is a sender which combines the overheat sensor with the gauge sensor.

I'd go for no play and light drag. If it gives a "quiet thunk as it shifts the bearing slightly", then it's slack. Are you sure the light drag isn't from the brakes?
