  1. I appreciate very much all your responses....lots for me to think about. Brian
  2. I'm having a new boat built and trying to fathom out a way of utilising the hot water in the calorifier (produced from either the engine running or the immersion heater)to warm the radiators, without turning the Webasto diesel heater on. It seems a waste to use the Webasto just to pump the hot water around, when I don't require the water to be heated by the Webasto. In my old boat I had to turn the Eberspacher on to utilise the heat from the calorifier to heat the radiators. Example 1. We're crusing along a canal and the water in the calorifier has been heated by the engine. Is there a simple way of pumping that water around the radiators without involving the Webasto heater ? Example 2. We're in a marina and on shore-power. W've used the immersion heater to heat the water in the calorifier. We don't need the Webasto to heat the water, we just need the hot water in the calorifier pumped around the radiators. I'd appreciate any ideas, and excuse my ignorence if it's a daft question or it's been discussed before. Brian
  3. Normally no current to stop-solonoid. current flows when stop-button on dash is pressed. If stop-solonoid was disconnected the engine would run, but I presume I could only stop it by physically pushing plunger on the solonoid itself. Okay for testing, but not long term. Will test when new stop-solonoid relay is fitted...with a cover to protect against diesel ingress !
  4. Hi again Mike Thanks for your interest. Just wonder if that "ghostly finger" may be in the form of a spontaneous discharge from a diesel-soaked stop-solonoid-relay ?? Guess where it is located ?.....right under the fuel filter assembly -and prongs up !!! Just on the off-chance...I'm changing it. I'll then fully test the engine and let you know the result. (Did you know that a stop-solonoid is £254.65 !) Cheers, Brian
  5. Hi, My name is Brian. I too have a Liverpool Boat (7 year old) with Barrus Shire (1952) engine. And a similar problem. The Engine stops for no apparent good reason ! The problem has ruined a 2 month cruise. RCR Engineer reckoned fuel blockage in tank..... so had a hole cut in top of tank at Streethay Wharf, all fuel pumped out, tank steam-cleaned, dried, fuel filtered back (very little dirt in it, no water) and put in on test..and engine stopped again after several hours. Fuel filter assembly & lift pump subsequently replaced, fuel lines checked and some incorrectly fitted olives replace with "stepped" variety etc etc......and engine stopped again on test. Barrus suggested that an inline 12v fuel pump may solve the problem. They supplied it, and Streethay wharf fitted it...and the engine stopped after 12 hours on test. Fuel flowing at least as far as fuel filter when disconnected. It has now cost £1,400.00 and apparently no nearer to solving the problem. I'm not a very practical person so depend on others who are. I've been told to to look at Stop Solonoid next ! Any suggestions may help us both ?
  6. Thank you Speedwell, may well call in on Saturday.
  7. Just bought a bottle of "WYNNS INJECTOR CLEANER FOR DIESEL ENGINES" today. Price £4.99 (325 ml) Claims to :- 1 Clean injectors and restore spray patttern 2 Clean & protect entire fuel system 3 Lubricate pumps and injectors and compensate for the reduced lubrication of low sulphur diesel 4 Improve combustion 5 Reduce soot particulates 6 Prevent fouling of the fuel filter 7 Reduce diesel knock Shouldn't think item 3 applies to us though, as I've just read that "red-diesel" has a limit of 2,000 mg of Sulphur per kg., compared to road diesels's 50 ! 8. Hello Arther, Moored at Westport Lake last Wednesday night, and I consider it a very fine mooring. Cracking place for a bbq with a view. The pack horse Inn great for food. Lamb shank £6.50 ! Do you know anything about the Froghall Festival next Saturday (23rd) ? Brian La Peniche 11
  9. Does anyone have any info. about a Marple Boat Festival on or around the 10th of July please. (Marple being at the junction of the Peak Forest and Macclesfield Canal) Thank you, Brian Colling La Peniche 11
  10. Have tried to search your site for an article or opinion about adding sound insulation into the engine bay to generally quieten the engine noise. Can you sggest a supplier of suitable insulation material ? Thank you, Brian Colling La Peniche 11
