My current interest is boating in Europe, specifically N France and Belgium, the app is potentially useful if only to aggregate the several different sources of information however work needs to be done; It only seems to be available for pc, most people use a tablet for navigation, when will there be an android/iphone version? The maps are not easy to read appearing faded at least on my pc, there is no facility to easily go to a location other than the present one As soon as I looked at it I picked up on inaccuracies, such as lack of distinction between navigable and non navigable waterways and immediately spotted that the marina at Aire sur La Lys for example is shown in the wrong place. It is correctly shown on the vnf app by the way. However as I said before if I can overlay my ais data on the app it would be a great boon will try this out when next on the boat.

Thanks now that will be really useful on the continent if not the UK. Unfortunately we don't start our cruise until end of June but will definitely give it a try then. Thanks again

i dont have a rasberry pi, my digital yacht ais connects by wifi direct to the navionics app on my tablet.

yes no problem getting on internet if area is covered I want to link my ais transponder to the map in the app preferably wirelessly the only app i have found to work is navionics - ridiculously expensive and buggy

I use an expensive and often out of date mapping for my travels in Belgium and France purely because it is the only one I have found that can integrate data from my AIS transceiver. Now if Mr Dubis app could do that I would be very grateful.

Like I said there is a separate standard for aussie boats but apparently out of date more complicated and really only relevant to the needs of lumpy water people

It seems that Australia and New Zealand already have rules for boats and camper vans, the latter are less onerous and logically more relevant to canal boats essentially battery has to be in a sealed vented box but no mention of it needing to be fireproof. AS/NZS3001.2:2022

Exactly so, unless the owner decides to consult the moorer its really down to the council and site owner how its taxed. No reason for Mr P or anyone else to declare anything.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story; this is the official government guidance which councils use https://www.gov.uk/guidance/council-tax-manual/council-tax-practice-notes This bit says; Where a marina with berths contains both moored pleasure boats and boats whose occupants use them as sole or main residences the outcome may on the facts be either a composite hereditament, a combination of composite hereditament and separate domestic hereditaments or indeed separate domestic hereditaments leading to separate bands . The presence of a composite hereditament may be indicated by identifying the following features; Where boats that are occupied as an individual’s sole or main residence do not have a permanent right to any specific mooring Evidence that boats which are an individual’s sole or main residence are actually physically moved on at least two occasions a year. The boat that is an individual’s sole or main residence must be moved to a different berth not merely out and shortly afterwards returning to the same berth. The presence of separate domestic dwellings within the boundary of the marina but not included in the composite hereditament would be indicated by ; A boat that is the sole or main residence of an individual remaining on the same mooring for more than 12 months. If in that time it left for a few days , then it returned to the same mooring the few days away would be considered de minimus and by virtue of sec 66 (5) it would be domestic. If while the boat is away the marina operator temporarily puts another boat on the mooring; but the berth holder always returns to his original berth, this would indicate a separate hereditament by virtue of the boat owners ability to exclude others and hence rateable occupation. Where a marina operator reserves the right to move boats to different moorings but actually does not exercise the right. It is possible on the facts to find both a composite hereditament and one or more separate domestic hereditaments in the same marina. The final decision to find a composite or not must rest with the specific facts of each case. So as far as I can see it all depends how often and how long Mr P went cruising or was moved around the marina. I imagine that most councils do not trouble to look into this on the basis that if they did then most moorers and their marina would start swapping moorings twice a year pdq and in any even the amount gained in moorers council tax would presumably be to a large extent cancelled by a corresponding reduction in the marina's commercial rates. Nor can I find anything which says that there is a legal obligation to inform the council if you start living on your boat?

unfortunately not as the courses cover a load of other things that i will never be doing which is a bit like the regulation that stipulates only a gas safe registered person can unscrew a test nipple or the one that says installation of gas and more must be done to British Standards but to read the British Standard you have to pay hundreds of pounds as they are no longer available in libraries or the one to say i cannot fit a window in my own house without the council inspecting it (for a fee) I could go on...............................
