  2. What are the boats? John and Maddy's Newbury and?
  3. I very nearly bought the Gorse in 2022. I viewed the boat on the Gloucester and Sharpness. In fact I paid a deposit but the then owner pulled out (returning my deposit). I was a bit miffed, but times moves on...
  4. The Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust have prepared Berkhampstead's cabin ready for graining (base coat on), but they can't source any light oak scumble. I had been using Polyvine's clear scumble and then their light oak colourant to tint it, but I only have a small amount left which I am keen to keep for touching up my own boats. Does anyone know of any stocks anywhere or would anyone like to donate any to this worthy cause? Thanks in advance.

  8. Glad you enjoyed your holiday on the Shroppie. No he wasn't pulling your leg! Leaves are a particular problem to boats on the Shroppie this time of year as they stick to the propeller and reduce its effectiveness. Merely changing the rotation of the propeller throws them off. Something the boatmen did called a "quick chuck back". Leaves collect in the narrows of bridges and it is best to chuck back once you have gone through a bridge. You don't need to increase the revs, just engaging reverse and going forward again is enough. It is also advisable to slow down and even clutch out through a bridge to allow the water to get round the boat and to reduce the chance of picking up underwater debris.
  9. Running blocks were never used on a single horse boat. When the horse goes into draught it is important that the line can not slip as the horse could easily lose balance. Ofcourse a pulley block was used on certain canals (ie Worcester and Birmingham) to create a 2:1 ratio to help the horse in getting the boat started out of a lock quicker. With a pair of horse boats, the second boat would have had running blocks which the steerer would control by means of the T stud mounted on the cabin top.

  13. Yes the engine is a Seffle 8hp. Yes it is in good condition. When it came out of Parry II it went in to the Cowburn and Cowpar motor Starling when it was shortened and later removed when the boat was restored
