  1. It’s a great shame indeed. Not the first of the late Ian Thompson’s boat to suffer so. His tug Titan was cilled in Zouch lock some time ago and sank. My old boat Resolute was alongside when it happened but was forward enough to clear. Titan is now repaired, hopefully Tenacious will be recovered and repaired.
  2. Hi. I know Tenacious well, all of the lettering and decoration is my work. She was built at Norton Canes in the mid 19s by Graham Edgson and Tony Bate for Dr Ian Thompson as a butty to his motor boat Temeraire but with an RN motor to enable it to travel independently. I believe it is currently breached on the bank on the Trent somewhere, having been caught out on high water. Good luck if you go forward, such a lovely boat deserves another good home.
  3. I’m very sorry to hear of Roy’s passing, condolences to the family. I worked alongside him in the early 80s from his workshop in Oldbury at times when signwriting was more generally used. I saw him last a couple of years ago at the BCNS rally at the top of the Crow.
  4. Whichever method you choose, I’ve always found that the “ ears” look best if the central tip reaches the top of the doors. Most yards I work with make hardboard templates for future use. If using lining tape, leave it in place until coverage is complete. Mid chrome yellow, commonly used, is difficult to cover in a single coat these days due to changes in paint formulation. Good luck!
  5. Stencils my arse. Never!! But I would say that, wouldn’t I??😉
  6. Artists oil colours are not usually used for canal style artwork. I’m happy to offer more information if needed. Message me for a phone number.
  7. If that is indeed Phil then it is markedly different from his usual work and I suspect very early output. I’ve known him as friend and colleague for more than 30 years and I’ve never seen that style of painting from him.
  8. Euphrates Packet, the wide trip boat, is for sale at Alvechurch for £20k. I remember it being fitted when new and did a lot of the lettering and decorative work.
  9. Yes, send them over. No problem.
  10. Hi Alder Witch Ive always maintained that sanding out the old name , repainting the panel then adding a new one is the best way forward. Maybe a photo of the existing would help me to offer more specific advice. Thanks.
  11. Yes, I’m still here, happy to help if I can.
  12. This was at Bumblehole some 18 months ago.
  13. I’ve written many Norton Canes boats with Registered at Norton Canes No 1111- the build number. Ours was 1076, the 76th boat. The index number was in a black panel above the engine room panel.
  14. Thanks Paul. If I was a younger man, I’d be interested…I’m not sure about the 70s for the Wain intervention. I recall seeing Grange in the early 80s at Allen’s yard at Oldbury in a very dilapidated state and Tony Gregory remembers doing an in water survey there around that time. If still for sale, she deserves the right caring owner.
  15. Mark, lots of memories for me with this. As a teen I spent much time with Ken helping him with the conversion from butty to motor. The cut stern end went on to become the bow of another boat, Grange End. Grange has ( still ) the Kelvin J2 installed by Ken. Simon Wain did much with her later, rebuilding the counter and cladding the cabin in steel. I saw her last at Glascote a few years ago. Proper boat!
