Hi all, Having an ex-hire boat, we originally had massive 6v batteries. Now we have replaced with 4 x 110 amp/hr 12 volt batteries. So I have connected ALL batteries up. Positve to pos. and Neg to neg. Does it matter which batteries connect to the pos and neg on the boat. at present I have No 1 connected to neg and No 3 to positive. Sorry for sounding a thicko, but we are having such a hard time trying to understand this battery thing. After cruising for say 6 hours, watching tv in the pm, we then have a nearly flat battery the next morning. we also have a laptop that is used occasionaly when there is a signal, but its not on for long, say 1 hour. plus 240 v fridge. very many thanks if anyone can help with this question.

I think that answers the question for narrowboates then. we can't get down there. a shame as I know quite a few folks who would be interested.

Hi, We have just moored up at Elton for the night. and as we passed Nassington. we did see the 2nd entrance. It was signposted with an arrow. but if you are coming from Elton, you would not be able to see the arrow, also some rocks half way accross entrance, would make folks assume that you are unab le to get down there. Can anyone tell me, pleasse is it possible to get into there with a narrowboat? thanks a lot.

yes. I had something from Denirtos. Could not open it, but it did slow the computer so guessed it was spam and deleted

We did the tunnel last year. Our boat is just 45ft, but we were travelling with a GT Marine NB at 59ft and quite square sides. BW cover you up with rubber sheeting, and the larger boat went in front of us, and to ballast it( it had a cratch that could not be taken apart) they brought a wheelie bin down and placed it in the well deck and then filled it with water, so that theboat came down to get them through. However out little Trundle was on the end and we have a cruiser stern and the railing got bashed, but you do have to sign a disclaimer. quite an experience! the Huddersfield narrow, while very beautiful does not work. but the BW beefy guys DO, and they worked very hard to get us along this canal. !

hi there, Newbies here. Have looked at some threads on this subject, but we are still a bit confused. Our "Weed" boat will be moored at the boatyard next year, but how do we go about getting a boat licence. and we are hoping to "do" the fens etc, so do we apply somewhere else for another licence. Am I right i thinking that this is the Gold, Silver and Bronze thingy ? Do we have to wait until we have chosen our insurance company etc. If anyone could just give me a clue of where to look it all up I would be grateful. Also with living in Spain, will this pose any difficltities, difficulties. thanks ever so We really enjoy this forum and find it very informative. This morning we have seen how a lot of you are impressed with CraftInsure for your boats and wil be comparing their quotes. Jen

well we have had another thought, and that is to drive up to lincolnshire when we get off the ferry, visit all the ancients, stay with great chums who are also dog-lover,therefore we will be made welcome, and then as soon as possible shoot back down to Weedon and START our cruise.I think we will be champing at the bit by then. but hey ho, its a solution. I am still looking forward to seeing if we can get Finlay on a bus. Does he require a pass ???

Spanish, english, valenciano, you name it. ! The only thing is he is very, very lively. Hmph. I think a few more training lessons are in order before we introduce him to the boat. He loves everyone and all other dogs, but he is like a fun-size greyhound , just faster. However he is used to wearing a necker-chief, so thats a start. Now I dont know if this is a bit too adventurous, but in July, we are thinking of making for the mid levels etc. as we hale from Flat Lincolnshire., and yes we are proud to be yellow-bellies. I have a re-union date with my bestie from school days. so it would be good if we could at least get to peterboroiugh, and then Mick will have to do a few bus journeys to fetch the car from weedon.really looking forward to planning all this, and doing a few shuttles. it should be interesting. The only thing is we can't take Finlay(dog) on busses in UK, can we? Mick did suggest I wear dark glasses and cary a white stick, but Finlay wil never pass for a guide dog, unfortunately. We quite fancy xmas time etc. as after 18 years in Spain, I am longing for cold, crisp mornings. Foggy Mornings. Mornings with a bit of snow or frost. anything like that really. bye for now and thanks for all the replies/ " el woofo" indeed! but I do know what Tonto means !!!!

Its me again, Oh I am hopeless. Keep clicking thr wrong reply button, Ithink, Anyway I have been on here before on the Waterways Holidays section, again more by luck than skill. and I made some really naughty abreviation mistakes. So, we are new to all of this, as you may have guessed. We were in the UK earlier this year and had 1 week on a NB, and after 2 mins on our own, knew that it was somehting that we would like to do more of.(we had a Tupperware ! boat years ago on the Ouse before going to Spain)Now we have just bought one of the Weed boats, and will be having our first cruise on our lovely little boat in early april. Then we are planning a 3.5 months cruise in summer, and will be bringing our dog with us from Spain. AND I am already thinking about next xmas on the boat . I wont type any more, just in case I have got this wroing AGAIN.

Yes, sorry it was a bit short, but I was panicking that I had not got the hang of this. Firstly I have been a "lurker" for anout 18moinths wjilst working in a boring office here in Spain. Hubby and I fell in love with boating over 20 years ago, had a plastic jobby on the ouse nr Ely. anyway after 18 years here, we are feeling the need to get back to wind and rain, and boating, so had out first NB holiday with Canalboat.it took 2 mins for us to decide that we abs loved it. Anyway, sorry about this, Norman at Canalboat, had asked for that dep, and that we should pay the balance before end of November, got itright this time. Can;t beleive what I originally typed, Sorry,. If not the boat will go to the spring sale and the price will increase. we have said that is hanging on the sale of a deceased Dads prop in UK. They also assured us that they black the bottoms every year, and they did insist that we have it surveyed( we would anyway) but that the surveyor will not find anything wrong, as they have looked after their boats. If the Surveyor should find something wrong, we have been assured that it will be put right. The inside of the boat is very good, neat and tidy, the engine is a Beta about 2 years old, and had done about 2,000 hrs ? I must admit we feel very confident with them, we have ben in touch twice this year with Jane at Crick and also visisted to see what she has to offer, but we have always missed the ones within out budget. we hope to boat 2/3 weeks in march, all of june, july and august, and bringing our fun-size grey hound type dog from SpainI that should be interesting) and then hope to get in a few weeks in november (theres that month again) also, allowing for stoppages, of course.. Now have I covered averything, and all you nice hel pful peopele, do you need to know more. once again thanks a lot, I am really pleased that I seem to have got the hang of this, especially typing NOV. ! wantedto put a smiley in but can;t seem to do it.

Help, I can't seem to get the hang of this. We are soon-to-be boaters, have put a deposit on a "weed" boat, which we found very comfortable. and seems a good deal. we have to pay the full dep before the end of nob. to get it at a certain price. but it will not be able to be slipped until spring. is this safe? we are very confident with the owners, and have good vibes.
