Looks like it's just holding the door closed as missing its decorative brass hinge rod.

I have just phoned and my usual chap has given up doing inspections. I'm in Staffordshire and wondering who is reliable, fair and can also test the gas with a manometer? It's a liveaboard 50ft trad. My BSS expires on the 7th of May. Many thanks James. -
I have burn all sorts over the last 14 years. 10 years ago liked Wildfire non smokeless, open fire alternative, then they made it smokeless and it just didn't seem to want to burn. Generally stuck with red. Bought 25x20kg bags of Superflame in Summer and have 6 bags left. For overall effectiveness can't beat red, but Superflame is good too. Low ash and burns well if fed air from below. Tend to mix it a bit or more red overnight. Different ovoids seem to suit different stoves, plus they keep changing the ingredients. All a bit of trial and error. Newburn is supposed to be good, but more petro coke content so not great for your grate.

Around 3 years ago I removed my leaking windows on my 1999 built Liverpool Boat. There was a lot of rust on the top sections so removed the windows. Thankfully all the screws came out easily. Flat bladed. Ground the rust away, treated with fertan, primed and painted then used closed cell tape from Ebay 10mm by 4mm. Used a black sealant, think it was P18 Urethane sealant. Used some on the back of the tape and then re-fitted the windows. Once fitted masking taped around windows then used the black mastic round the outside of the window. Then repainted the boat around a year later. So far so good. Then etch primed the window frames and painted them black as looked very old. Glad I kept them as Double Glazing very expensive. James.

Living three days a week on a 23 ft / waterbug style boat
canals are us? replied to SNDR's topic in New to Boating?
My Sister had a 23ft Water bug with Mitsubishi thornycroft 2 cylinder diesel inboard for around 6 years. It was already over plated in 4mm steel and I fitted a arada hamlet hardy 4kw stove. My Sister lived on it for say 4 days a week to get away from bad neighbours and eventually years later moved to a different property with good neighbours. Sold it around a year ago, or a little longer for £10,000. New owner loved it. The boat had the front bow escape window, so my Sister just left the bow seating as a permanent bed. Inulation was 1 inch rockwool. Cosy though once stove going. I quite liked the waterbug, easy to wind, characterful. -
You may be able to take the ceiling ply lining down as you need access to around the flue to tighten up the bolts to the cast iron collar. I used high temp silicone and bolted the cast iron collar to the roof. I cut out a square in my ceiling and then fitted a fireboard cover plate after fitting the stove and flue, plus removed the spray foam insulation 8 inches away. If a decktite/ rubber type seal then, no access below needed as fixings from above. James.

How many sacks of coal on your boat today?
canals are us? replied to Gybe Ho's topic in General Boating
Happy New Year! I keep 2 bags of coal on board and 1 bag of logs. Bought 25x 20kg bags of Superflame for £275 in the Summer from Charles Swan Coal Merchants. Included 5 nets of logs. First time ever bought in bulk, stored in my Nan's Garden. I have also bought the odd bag of Oxbow red. Cut up some log and timber offcuts around August and filled 18 rubble bags. Now have 3 bags of logs left and 15 bags of Superflame. Like the low ash of Superflame. Thinking though to try NEWBURN, anyone used it? James. -
Being defra approved you cant fully shut down the air inlets to slumber burn, useful for keeping it in overnight. Ie to make less smoke/ cleaner burn they stop you from fully closing the vents, even if you think they are shut. Also efficiency is gained by adding a more restrictive baffle plate plus tertiary burn at the rear. Some stoves smoke out when refuelling, which would be annoying! The more efficient it is you may find on a boat the short flue length isn't good enough to draw the smoke up the flue. The DEFRA approved stoves are supposedly more efficient but with the issues above. I haven't changed my stove for a DEFRA model, so can't say if more efficient as sounds counter productive to not fully slumber and have the fire burning more brightly. You could try adding side bricks to make the grate smaller. A more compact coal base may use less and generate the same heat. Morso Owl stove reviews uk James.

Depends if the iron fitting you have has a flat mating seat like a tap connector where the washer can seat and then compress against the boiler flange to seal. If no recessed seat inside the fitting then just the PTFE tape or Hawk white and hemp. James.
-
Hemp and hawk white may be better. On mine I just used around 10 turns of PTFE tape and tightened up by half threading and removed fitting and then add 2nd layer of PTFE tape. 5 turns sounds like too little. On iron fitting hemp and hawk white may be better? Also used a 1 inch tank connecter and used a fibre sealing washer inside to seal against the boiler stubs too when installed a boiler stove in Kerry Ireland. James.

I love my Woodwarm fireview 4.5kw stove. If I bought another boat to live on, would look for a second hand one. If I was looking for cheap and cheerful would probably go for Ecosy stoves like this. Newburn Defra Approved Small Eco Design Wood Burning Stove made by Ecosy+ Be interesting to know how it would work on a short boat chimney. Plus DEFRA eco design. Ecosy Ottawa too. Eco Design Wood Burning Multi-Fuel Stoves James.

My Woodwarm stainless steel back boiler looks like it's made of 4mm stainless. The steel one lasted 13 years as a liveaboard, so hoping 15 years for stainless. I had my boiler increased in thickness and rear flue outlet not required so all boiler of about 12 inches by 12 inches, thicker at top. The new boiler should come with a warranty. 3 years seems for stainless steel. Good luck in your quest. James
