  3. If lots of people agree that connecting the bilge pump to the starter battery is a stupid idea why is it done so much? When our boat was new the pump was connected to the 80ah starter battery. I very quickly connected it to the 960ah LiFePO4 leisure bank. It seemed an absolute no brainer to me. I asked the builder why they do it like that but he couldn't come up with a reasonable answer, just we've always done it like that.
  4. For those who do facebook here is a nice account by @PaulJ about moving IanD's boat from Huddersfield to Sheffield. https://www.facebook.com/groups/davejellybeancanalforum/permalink/27430986689860519
  5. The saturated fat market maybe?
  6. Now it is fixed don't forget to turn back on the engine shutdown detection on both the Orion XSs. If you don't you might drain the new starter battery because it is trying to charge the lithium bank while the engine isn't running.

  8. My map show 3 days on the CRT visitor moorings.
  9. Thunderbugs. Presumably what others here have called thunderflies. Very small black things. https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/house-and-home/household-advice/a65423817/thunderbugs/
  10. 1: The water in the tap in my house hasn't been tested in as long as I've lived there i.e. 35 years. 2: I always run the hose for a couple of minutes before filling the tank. I have also never seen a boater use the same hose for elsan cleaning and filling the tank. 3: I always use my own hose. 4: The nearness of the elsan won't affect the quality of the water in the pipe or tap. You could spray disinfectant on the tap if it worries you. In my house the kitchen tap is 5 metres away from a toilet which can't be unusual and doesn't worry anyone. 5: My original question was asking why a mains water tap in a house should be better than a CRT mains water tap. Nothing to do with stored water in a tank.
  11. What's wrong with mains water from CRT services?
  12. There is another way: Run the engine until you run out of diesel. Bow haul the boat to the nearest diesel pump and fill up with diesel, not forgetting to note what the litres reading is on the pump otherwise you would have to do it all again. Simples!
  13. ESB was very strong in the 1980s, I think the strongest of all the ones you list. I don't know what its strength is now.
  14. Is there a list of all the finishing positions?
  15. A normal user definitely can't operate the gates independently of each other. I don't think even the lock keeper can do that any more. I wouldn't like to take a 67 footer through there. I think you need to add option 5: CRT knew that the gates used to be able to operate independently of each other which allowed longer boats through. But the equipment needed replacing and they decided that they couldn't afford the extra control equipment that would be required to allow this.
