I get a little nervous in my fat boat going past Stockton Heath...Moore....as I'm no longer certain where I can wind the boat, or where there are services....can I keep going till I get to Midland Chandlers...which I know is just before the 3 tunnels (which I cant go through). Is there space to wind a 57ft widebeam at Midland Chandlers?

What's the rough distance from Stockton Heath to Midland Chandlers?

I am moored 1 mile south of Moore and have just seen a 60ft nb wind in the width of the canal here

Yes you can turn at the junction (Preston Brook Waters Meeting) which is only ~ 200yds before Midland Chandlers.

Or, you can go to Runcorn and turn there, either at the Sprinch or Top Locks.

About 5.5 miles, from memory, Stockton Heath to Preston Brook.

just had a walk there is a winding hole just before bridge 6 where he turned but a nb is moored quite close to it wacko.png

In theory you could turn just beyond Midland Chandlers, at Claymoore's base, because they have a little 'pond' thing which makes the canal wider at that point. In practise, it would depend on what hire boats are there, to do it. Why not just wind at the junction with the main line and Preston Brook branch, then reverse to MC if you wanted to stop there?

Glad to see someone has it the right way round ;)

Is the winding hole a the north end of the Preston Brook tunnel too small for a 57 foot widebeam? if it is you could go right up to the tunnel entrance.

Third pic down on this link is where the Runcorn arm goes off, right under the M56, you could turn round there easily.

I think it's badly silted. It was made for the tunnel tugs, so was never 'full length'. We couldn't turn a Leeds & Liverpool Short Boat there in the 1960s.

Would anyone recommend a trip to Runcorn...or should I not. smile.png

Any services down that way?

I'd thoroughly recommend it. What kind of services are you after? There is Preston Brook Marina....

okie dokes. I'll go see what Runcorn is all about ;-) Thanks!

water and elsan is what we need. I know Thorne Marine offer it in Stockton Heath, and the hire base at Midlands Chandlers (is it Claymore)...but after that...I'll do some research:)

Hi, Dean,...just take the plunge and explore the whole length of the Runcorn arm (sorry, Tim, I mean the main line). Take your time, enjoy the views, and pop in to see the very hospitable chaps and chapesses at the Bridgewater Motor Boat Club near the Waterloo Bridge, now the bitter end of the canal. Thoroughly recommended, and they have all the services you could wish for, except re-cycling of shower water!cheers.gif

Hi Dean, I can't give you any information to help you answering your question, but I can't tell you how many times I've clicked on "Read my Widebeam Build Blog"

always hoping that there is some more news about your very quick and good fit-out, but sadly enough there haven't been any updates since dec 10- 2012.

Do you think you'll ever find some time to continue with it ?

Cheers,

Peter.

Peter....thanks for your interest in the blog :) Most of the work came to a halt when the famdamily all climbed on board, however I have been plodding along installing solar, tiling the shower, hanging curtain rods, adding batteries, etc. I'll be aiming to have all the bits n bobs in place for a BSS in August, so as part of that I'll aim to update the blog :) Winter was quite uneventful, but we did install the coal stove in time and kept nice and warm. We've been off shorepower now for 6 weeks, and loving it...so this trip down to Runcorn will be lovely...the teen has college holidays, and I want some quieter waterways for a few days :) It would be easier if there was an automatic way to have my posts here sent directly to my blog....as that would keep it very full :) I'll have to play with things.

Apparently its okay for boats up to 55' long. I passed it with a 57' boat and it looked too small for me. I'd not risk it. Its not like you could just go on to the next winding opportunity, for example, you'd need to reverse for about 3/4 mile and through 2 bridges too, etc.

The longest of the tunnel tugs was 60' long, but as I said I think it's fairly silted.

I understand that you still have a whole bunch of more important and urgent jobs to do first, but it would be nice to continue your blog if you'll ever have a spare moment.

In the meantime, I wish you succes with all those jobs, enjoyable cruising and troublefree windings.
