Hola.

Been lurking for a while now, ive been researching NB life since Christmas time and its been a wish for a good few years.

My situation is as follows;

Im coming into some money in the next 6 months that means i will be lucky enough to live a dream (or at least start living it)

The money is dependant on a house sale so the timing is not set.

I want to live aboard, and have my two kids twice a week and alternate weekends. Ive been looking at between 50>60 foot giving a kids bunk cabin and a fixed double.

Im also reregistered as Autistic, although im lucky to be high functioning...so im not quite rain man lol

My questions really are for general advice on the lines of should i sort my mooring now? What if its 9 months until i get my boat?

Should i go for sailaway with additions or a used boat? Ive built campers and am pretty good with wood butchery.

Should i go to see boats yet?

Its all a bit in limbo until the house sells. But im looking at spending £20000 > £40000

Thank you for any advice in advance BB captain.gif

To answer your questions,

mooring - it depends where you have to be - presumably not too far from kids. If you say roughly what area you need to be in then someone who knows the area could advise.

used

yes - its never too early to look at boats

Happy boat hunting

smile.png Hello BB, regarding your questions the best advice I can give is to continue to ask and search on here for advice. Due to the time delay regarding your 'boat funding',

it all depends on what you would really like ie sailaway or second hand. Now is the best time to get out and visit as many boat shows as you can. Plus lots of 'boaty

magazines ' to look through and study like :

Waterways World;

Canal and River Boat and Tillergraph which you can order and have sent to your home address. smile.png

It is important IMO to also check out the different mooring options and find which option would be suitable for you and your lifestyle.

I personally am 99% off my head with the faeires and quite eccentric, but that has nothing to do with a specific condition, it is just the way that I have always been and I function very well in today society .Infact friends have often said that I have autisitc tendancies, but dont most of us in reality smile.png so your autism shouldnt be too much of a problem regarding your new lifestyle. I personally do not make friends easily and prefer my own company 90% of my time but that works out well as a boater, as people do not bother you if you dont want them to and you are not made to feel at all 'odd'. But if you need help then you will find other boaters more than happy and willing to help in any way :)

Hope this bit of advice has helped a bit

Hello and welcome aboard, sounds like you have a few good options here and are thinking along the right lines, you have a fairly healthy budget but not sure how far that would go in the new boat market. You would however get a tidy second hand boat for that.

I'm not sure where you are but my advice would be to trawl the brokers and work out what would suit you best, what stern type, length and layout. Look at as many boats as you can and the right boat might find you.

Start to look at moorings in your location and see what's about, test the market as it were. You may have more luck with marinas at short notice and then look for online later if that's what you want.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

Im leaning towards Trad...although im not going to turn down the right boat because its semi/cruiser.

My ideal layout would be - Trad>double>bathroom>bunk room>smallish kitchen>living area. But i think im going to be pushed to find that layout, maybe an ex hire boat would be closer to that.

An issue i have is finding a more expensive boat and having to completely remodel, it seem like an odd way for me to go.

Body wise i can handle, i can prep and paint and am fairly artistic. Although im inlove with some of the 'commercial' paint schemes.

Hi BB

We are just having a boat built which wont be ready until October. We were advised to get our mooring secured as soon as we could. We have been able to do that, paid a deposit but dont have to pay anything else until the boat goes on the water. The deposit just secures our mooring for when we need it. We have been looking at boats for quite a while and the more you look at, I think the more you get an idea of exactly what you want and hopefully get an idea of exactly might be needed to build your own and see if thats the route you want go down.

I hope you enjoy the searching and deciding but there is some great advice and help on this site.

Like Tree, i have my times too, so hopefully this lifestyle will offer you the flexibility you want in yours

Welcome to the forum smile.png

If you're handy with wood work, you might really enjoy fitting out an insulated sailaway, from a company such as this one, who would be able to get you the shell and engine, and foam spray insulation, all for around 30k, and leave you enough cash to fit it out....it cost me about 4k to fit a basic (economical) interior on my boat....others would go for more expensive furnishings, but you dont really have to. A sailaway would let you design it exactly as you like, and it would be a new boat/engine etc (although some would tell you the older engines are better...but I think a lot of new boats are doing well with the new engines).

Here's the place I bought my sailaway

ETA = you pay 1k to book your build, and the rest once completed. They do a boat in about a month.....standard design...so they can build them quicker ...decent boat shapes....impressed with mine.

Yeah thats an option (*ive been looking at that site)...but dependant on what the house sale shapes up like, because once the house is gone im homeless lol

With the additions or lined boats the tails just require fittings/outlets right? one thing that puts me off a sailaway is having to employ an electrician. If its just a case of fitting sockets and light fitting i can do that no problem.

Having built campers i know what i want for a lot of things but others are new to me...sink/shower/washing machine outlets for example...are they plumbed into a central waste pipe or do they individually enter the cut via their own hole in the hull?

My chap has built his own campervans and the like, and we found an unfinished project at a brokerage, not only was it a good price but we finished it to our specifications. The electrics and plumbing were all done, kitchen and bathroom were in, so we took the rest of it apart and bought 2 & 3 seater sofas off ebay & cut them down, put a wall bed in... it's fab now.

Some of the bigger brokers might be just up your street if you are good at fitting things out. Go and have a looksee, we'd never have bought ours if we hadn't had a good look round it, it felt right when we got in it, but didn't look right for us on the internet, if you see what I mean.
