Coming up through the staircase at Etruria this afternoon, there was suddenly a loud bang from the front of the boat. Puzzled, we went to have a closer look and found the front fender hanging down. It must have caught on something on the top gate - possibly the bottom of the rubbing plate.

That's the good thing about string. The fender was attached with two bits of 5mm thick string, instead of chain all the way, and one of them had simply broken with no other damage; in fact there was still enough string left to re-attach it, so the only loss was to my pride.

String? You old-fashioned thing you

A cable tie is soo much more modern

We have the tiniest, feeblest little shackles in the chain

i've had loads of special chain links out with the magnet over the years where the link is made with extra length and 'doubled over' so that it simply stretches and opens up. forged iron so quite old. the ones I find are open indicating that they have served their purpose.

big strong cable tie is a good idea :)

my very big front fender is fixed with 6mm polyprop which does break if caught up

another way is to cut through one side of one chain link

Doesn't the BW Byelaw that says "Every vessel navigated on any canal shall have ready for immediate use proper fenders of suitable material and in good condition and the master of such vessel shall use such fenders whenever there is a risk of the vessel striking against any other vessel or against any wall, lockgate, bridge or other thing." cover it?
