:) Hello Wullie,

I am present sorting out the complete fit-out of mhy boat and with advice from here bought the following books from Amazon :)

1. The Narrowbaot Builders Book;

2. The Waterways Guide to Narrowboat Planning;

3. Narrowboats Care and Maintenance;

4. The 12 Volt Bible for Boats.

Plus the wealth of help, advice and information from forum members here is IMO invaluable.

Hope this helps, Bestest wishes and Good Luck :)

I have the Narrowboat Builder's Book, and as well as being written by experienced practical men, it's engagingly lively in style - the writing is not dry, though one hopes that the inside of your boat will be.

We saw 'Kottingham', the boat which they fitted out, going through Cropredy last year. The owners told me that they have kept the interior almost exactly as per the original fit-out, so it's a bit of a time capsule now, but it still looked in good nick after 20 or more years, a tribute to the original craftsmanship.

I would have thought that just about any narrow boat would cover a book, but if you have trouble finding a big enough boat, perhaps if you let us know the size of the book you want to cover, the forum can help..

The Inland Boat Owner's Book: ISBN1-870-00286-5

We have this one too - it is packed with loads of information about boats and boat systems.

Some of the info. may be a little dated now but it's still a very good reference (even if the print is on the small size!)

There are three versions of the Narrowboat Builders Book. If I remember correctly, the first two editions deal with build and fitting out of Kottingham, but the 3rd edition was completely rewritten and features Graham Booth's fitting out of Rome, although some of the general content from the earlier versions is still included.

The 3rd edition is still available new from various sources. For the Kottingham versions you will need to search on the second hand book market (or Ebay).

Yes, I realised that it had been revised and updated (for example, the advice that you could still buy a Petter PH2 from Hawker Siddeley might send people on wild goose chases these days!)* I bought my copy during a delirous day's bookshopping in Hay-on-Wye.

*although in fact Lister still include a PH2 in their catalogue, but only as a fixed-speed engine).

But may we bring our canal book website to your attention. www.canalbookshop.co.uk carries the widest selection of canal books anywhere. We can't necessarily undercut Amazon, but we can offer personal service, advice, and above all, by far the widest selection of canal books anywhere. And, if you're passing Audlem Mill on the Shroppie, you can see most of them in our shop.
