Nowt like planning ahead!!!

Is this the earliest the preliminary details have ever been released????

Every year we take Badsey for a cruise for the month of November. Every year we plan to go down the Oxford Canal to Oxford and EVERY year for the past FIVE years the stoppages programme has prevented us getting down to Oxford and back during November. You would hope the planners could vary it a bit to allow access in alternate years.

Hmm, feedback via the online form.

Which is where?

Just what I was wondering...........

Couldn't find an online form and so looked to find this consultation listed in their list of consultations - which stated there are no consultations at this time!

Whereas I believe that either the southern GU or the Oxford has been open when the other is closed in more recent years, it currently appears that both are to be closed for simultaneous periods this coming winter.

One that stands out is a stoppage at Middlewich Big lock which lasts from early January to the end of March. Both sets of gates were replaced very recently so perhaps substantial chamber repairs?

Or they forgot to tell the person drawing up the map that the gates had already been replaced!

I remember that fairly recently the byewashes were bypassed with surface pipes and pumps. Could this be for more permanent repairs?

And the Shroppie is to be closed for the second year running in November/December, when historically it's been Nov/Dec one year and Jan/Feb the next, alternating with the Trent & Mersey. I admit to a vested interest, but this is just unreasonable for canalside businesses such as ours. To lose the Christmas trade yet again will hit hard. Clearly, CRT have again ignored commercial interests when formulating the stoppage programme. We know from past experience that whilst consultation is postulated, the comments are usually ignored, and they just do what they want.

Apparently the canals close between October and March

When we first bought our boat in early October we spent the next few months moving her down south. We encountered a notice at one of the locks that said something like "there's x amount of days until Christmas - shouldn't your boat be in it's marina by now?"

I wish I'd photographed it.

I got this reply from CART. It means that you have to comment on each stoppage individually, even if they are closing the same canal. and the "consultation" is not listed on their website as a consultation.

I’m sorry that you’ve not been able to find where to comment on the Winter Stoppage consultation on our website. In case you’d still like to have a look (or have any other comments) you need to search for the stoppages, in the same way as on the main stoppage site. To leave your comment simply click into the details of the relevant stoppage and you’ll find that you can write your comments there. However, I have forwarded your e-mail to the local waterway office and I am sure that they will add your comment to any others they receive during this first round of consultation.

Thank you for this advice. I had in fact already written to the Manager of our local CRT area, and will use our approaches as necessary.

I received another reply which states that CART leave one route South open at all times - Oxford or GU.

They will always carry out stoppages on the South Oxford before Christmas and on the GU after Christmas because there is more work to do on the GU than the Oxford and less weeks in the stoppage period before Christmas than after.

So although this is the first round of a "consultation" on the subject they have immediately rejected my comments and state that we will never ever be able to take our boat from Rugby to Oxford in November.

In the second round of the "consultation" I will suggest they solve the problem by moving Christmas back a couple of weeks - simples!
