Hello everyone,

My husband and I are about to buy a narrowboat to live on permanently. We can live ANYWHERE in the UK, although as we have family in London / Hertfordshire we don't want to be too far north (so perhaps no further than Sheffield?).

I know we are lucky being able to live anywhere, not needing to be near a certain town or city for work or whatever, but we don't really know the waterways and canals,so could do with some advice.

I realize asking "where is nice?" is a bit general.

We'd like somewhere not too expensive, friendly, quiet, peaceful, green. Not bothered about having all the facilities so don't mind something basic.

If you live on a boat somewhere great, or know of somewhere great, or know of a canal or area where we are more likely to find a nice residential mooring than somewhere else ... or can give us any general advice about residential moorings / waterways, we would be most grateful.

Oh and if anyone knows of a project narrowboat 35-65ft for sale, please let us know!

Thanks very much

Emma and David

HI Emma and David,

Will you be living in one place on your boat and not cruising?

If you intend to cruise, you will be able to find Leisure moorings much easier than Residential moorings

regards

Kim

You say you don't know the canals. Do you know narrowboats? Have you spent any time on one? Good luck

Not sure what you think of as "project" boat but see my post of 14th May

Give us a clue what we are looking for chef!

Hi Kim,

We'd prefer not to be cont cruising, although we will do that if we can't find anywhere good at first. I haven't really looked into how cc works (but I will).

Really interested in the project boat canalchef. You say it's near you - where is that? Could we come and have a look asap?

Well we lived on a narrowboat in Holland for a year (years ago) but we've spent the last 10 years living by the sea - we know much more about coastal waters and sailing than inland. My husband was a RNLI lifeboatman for years, we spent a long time restoring a huge old admiralty launch, still have a wooden sailing boat for sale (anyone?).So although we are a bit clueless about this new life we're about to embark on, we've had lots of varied expereince of the water in one way or another.

Do you know if you would like a city centre mooring, or something out of the city. Manchester has a new marina...lots of residential berths. (New Islington Marina). Easy access to the city and trains, trams etc, but...you cant just pop out for a weekend cruise due to the number of locks in every direction. There are some lovely countryside marinas that might not offer elec etc, but do offer the quiet and peaceful life....solar panels might alleviate a need to be hooked to an elec supply. If you dont have to be in one place....CRUISE ! ....you really shouldnt stay in one place.....you are ideally positioned to enjoy the whole range of canals...SO WHY DONT YOU.....there is nothing different about cruising around (slowly) and being in a marina from a boatey point of view....and as long as you adhere to the stay times at various Visitor Moorings...and dont spend more than 14days on a towpath in one area....you'll have no problems at all, and be experiencing much more than marina boats do.

I think it would be very sad to stick yourself in a marina when you dont have to?

Is this a mooring advertised on the CRT website that you can bid on?

Thanks for Manchester tip. There are reasons why we want to stay in one place, one being a medical thing. Sorry to sound all mysterious, - it's not very exciting so no one need feel curious! We are looking forward to travelling around sometimes but we do need a permanent base. Now, you mention lovely countryside marinas with not much in the way of facilities. Any idea how I could start looking for them?

Thanks for taking the time to give me your advice - much appreciated.

I would like to put in a vote for Kings Marina in Newark, run by BWML and situated halfway between Lincoln and Nottingham on the A46. There are at least three Kings residential moorers who haunt CWDF, and at least one leisure moorer.

Good facilities, and has a very friendly community. Newark itself is a proper market town that has done a remarkable job of resisting the "cookie cutter" approach to town planning, and is full of little family shops, as well has having many of the big name chains. It also boasts two railway stations. There are 20 resi berths, but I'm not sure if there are any vacancies at the moment. Worth a visit though.

Very interested - can we come have a look?

I think under forum rules, If you make one more post (about anything) you then have the ability to send me a personal message with your telephone number so that we can get the owner to call you and arrange a viewing.

just checked on one that was up for long term rent , suituated next to a marina with its mooring , as the couple have to be house bound , with family matters for a year, appears its just been "rented " for a few months now .

though i think they were looking to rent it for longer as such , as they dident want to give up the boat or mooring , unless forced by circumstacess . finacial and otheirwise

i guess it may/ might have suited you ( both ) by getting you local to the midlands were you would have time to scout out ,the trent and soar areas . and i guess you appear by your post that the nb would be in very good hands . which is what they were looking for i think

Hi,

Just take a normal C&RT leisure mooring and use it for residential purposes.

C&RT seem to take no action to prevent you from doing this - get all post directed to a land based address.................

Not sure if my last post worked so here goes again. I'll try and work out how to PM you.
