hi everyone.

I have some questions about annodes? please forgive me for my nievity and if these questions are dumb.

1. what do anodes do?

2. what price is it usually to buy annodes and have them fitted? (we have been quoted £170 for 4x 3Kg anodes)

3. Is there somewhere cheaper to buy them ? then take them to the boatyard you are dry docking at and get them to instal them? or is that bit cheeky?

4. what are the differences in materials of annodes? and sizes? Any recomendations for what annodes to get?

Thank you! Any advice is VERY appreciated! this is our first time blacking and there seems like a lot to think about!

Anodes are frequently referred to as 'wasting anodes' - - basically because they 'waste away' through galvanic corrosion (Instead of your boat's hull wasting away! eek!) (by electrolysis).

There are different metals used dependent upon what type of water you're floating in . . on inland (non-salty) water we use Magnesium anodes...

They are either welded or bolted to your hull below the water line - and are best placed for and aft (and sometimes amidships as well) in locations where you're not too likely to knock them off when you strike objects/locks/banks/cyclists.

You can look at any inland Chandlers to see what they charge for them, but I don't think that £170 for 4, and welding them on, is too bad.

Cyclist? Good going but I thought your anodes were bolted/welded to the boat not thrown from it. Is there some thing about your boat and the way you motor it that you haven't been telling us?

You will need magnesium anodes for fresh water.

Zincs are for boats based in salt water and aluminium for brackish water or boats that venture between salty and fresh water on a regular basis.
