Hi everyone

we are looking for a dry dock near london to black our boat in.

Idealy it would be:

near london

be able to fit two narrowboats in (40ft / 70ft) to black both at the same time

cheap!!!!

and somewhere we can black the boats ourselves!

thanks very much! been looking on google but the boatyards don't seem to big on having web sites. Or if anyone knows a dry dock that they would especially recommend?

thanks for all your help it is really and truely appreciated.

Thank you. x

Try ringing Hallingbury marina on the R,Stort 01279723568 they're prices are very reasonable and DIY but I'm not sure if they'll allow two boats in together although the docks wide and long enough for two full length narrowboats. I did a job on a boat in there only yesterday.

Its called Uxbridge Boat Centre, has an excellent chandlery as well.

Hallingbury marina charge about £200 per 6 days in the dock + any extras like pressure washer, paint, Anodes ect. My boat cost me last August £260 for dock, one can of bitumen and use of pressure washer. For two boats in there I daresay they'd charge half as much again say £300.

I always use Hallingbury because its cheap and its a lovely location.

It is beautiful there, a bit cut off though, no shops or pubs near at hand, And unless you go and dine in there you can't get a drink at the Mill restaurant.. During mid winter like January, February when not many folk want to work in an open dock in freezing conditions they normally allow you two weeks in the dock for the price of one, extra paint drying time, providing they have no boats booked in there for surveys.

There are also dry docks at Bulls Bridge, St Pancras (not DIY) and Matsworth but the only one that I am sure takes two narrow boats is Uxbridge. Stanstead Marina has a crane and hardstandings.

For Matsworth read Marsworth

This is really useful. My Springer hull was replated approx 7 years ago before I bought it, now time to get it checked before blacking. Would prefer diy blacking but need to find a dry dock which would be able to replate if that was needed. Would Hallingbury be up to that. If not any suggestions for suitable place located between London and Northants? I really don't want to go further North although that seems to be the area where these places are. Thanks all.

I think you mean Bulbourne. But it is alongside Marsworth Top Lock.

this is REALLY helpful! thank you so much. just doing some price checking and I was wondering what a resonable price for annodes would be? we need 4 fitted to a forty foot boat. have been quoted 170£ to get 4 x 3kg anodes! seems expensive or is that a normal price?

Thing is with replating, the boatyard isn't gonna know how big a job it will be and might have to order stuff in (my friend who needs some patching done has just gone through this herself).

So, you ought to find somewhere where you can book the dock for a day so they can have a look. Because you might need more than one week in the dock for welding then reblacking, you need to allow time to dry between coats of blacking and patching and plating can be a big job, involving stripping out some of the interior (as my friend is finding out). What you don't want is a situation where you've booked a drydock for a week, then you get booted out with a half finished job because there is someone else booked in the following week. Only to find that the drydock is then booked out for weeks and weeks. I know boaters in this situation, ending up with tickets because the patrol officer isn't sympathetic to their plight of having to wait ages to go back in the dock again. Some people just come out and live on the boat on hardstanding for as long as it takes to get things sorted. If you're going to be out for a long time it works out cheaper, but a crane isn't cheap compared to a drydock.

i'm just reiterating what my friend has been through.

Thanks loads LM, not things I would have thought of and will certainly factor it in when making the arrangements. I feel for your friend and hope she's back on the water soon.

We had our blacking done at Denham floating dock - can't complain about the service or price charged - included 4 new anodes (£40 each IIRC and £10 a foot for blacking - 3 coats. Done last September and still seems to be stuck on. I would think they also do welding but no idea if you can do it yourself. Really handy if you live in London as Uxbridge tube station isn't that far away - not easy to drive to though.

Thanks Roggie. haven't decided when and where yet but will give feedback which I hope will be of use to others.

Middx & Herts Boat Services at Winkwell, near Hemel. It's another 30 locks north of Uxbridge but it's a lot nicer to work in, the owner doesn't mind talking to you (rather than talking down to you) and it's much cheaper - At least it was for me. I paid 230 quid/week for my widebeam 3 years ago. Extras like the pressure washer and anodes welded on is expensive though.

I assume it's still owned by the one Kevin?

You can't get two boats in there so perhaps for you it would be the same price as Uxbridge.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback re blacking and apologies to those who may have received a response reporting it as spam. I wondered where they had gone and it wasn't until I got a message asking why I'd reported them as spam I realised what had happened!
