Hi

My 30 year old gas oven is finally giving up on life and I am now looking at new single ovens to replace it, and probably a gas hob if it's not too expensive.

I'm just not sure on the advantages/disadvantages of an LPG oven v an oven with a conversion kit.

I am guessing that my current oven has a conversion kit on it, as it's a standard looking ancient old thing.

Thanks for your help.

We bought a New World oven & hob from a well known chandlers. Not impressed, the hob is ok but the oven not very good.

With hindsight we wish we bought a standard unit and converted it, we would have had a much wider choice of oven & hob and it would have probably been cheaper depending on the original purchase price. The other annoying thing was the oven was supposed to have been made for boats yet the unit has a 240v fan in the oven compartment. I think someone just bought a job lot of New World cookers & hob did the conversion and sold the lot off as for boats.

Having said that it's lasted 9 years without failing, it just seems to take an age to cook stuff in the oven.

Buying again though I would probably go for a standard unit and convert it.

Whatever you buy make sure it's got flame failure on all the burners as well as grill and oven...they are sometimes sold for use in multi occupancy buildings.

I have found a few units which have a battery ignition and full ffd and no fan but they do have a folding lid which won't work against a cabin side as it won't go fully upright.

Have a look in a currys or John Lewis.

Cheers

Our original cooker was a New World domestic unit with LPG jets and it was brilliant. A few years ago it failed and we bought a New World from a chandlery to replace it; it was absolutely awful. When I phoned New World customer service and said their LPG cookers were useless, the girl on he phone said "yes they are, aren't they"

For a much much cheaper price we bought a Cannon (that's a make of cooker, not an explosive weapon for getting hire-boats out of our way) from an internet shop. It's a domestic cooker but is available in an LPG version and it's really good, The ignition and a fan are both 240v but the ignition could be converted (or you could light it by another means) and the fan is only there to keep the control knobs cool when the grill or oven is in use.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Mike, the grill is leaking gas when it's not on, so I'm having to isolate the oven. This could have been going on for a while, I've just really noticed a gas smell in the last few weeks.

I'm ploughing through various sites trying to find something suitable.......

So many domestic ovens have fans. Can you still use them, just not connect up the fan?

Sorry to butt in but this has been puzzling me for some time.

I'm pretty sure it varies from one to another. Obviously if it's a fan oven you need to use the fan, but on most others you'd probably be OK. When I asked Cannon about ours, they said that the control knobs will get quite warm if the oven or grill is used without the fan, it's perfectly safe - you wouldn't burn yourself or damage the cooker - but it wouldn't meet the relevant legislation regarding temperature of user controls so they had to fit the fan. Other cookers may have different requirements.

My brother bought the same cooker as me and didn't connect the fan, when he used it all the knobs melted laugh.png So if you want to test if a cooker will run without fan running I would keep a good eye on it

The other annoying thing with the fan is it continues to run several minutes after the oven is switched off.

The fans on Stoves ovens also run on for several minutes after switch off. But I'm told the period of run-on is dependant on a thermister rather than a timer.

I see! A competent gas technician will be able to re-grease the gas cock (snigger) which will usually fix this problem.

Or maybe you want a new cooker anyway! Beware of modern 'boat' LPG cookers though, the grills are generally feeble in comparison to vintage cookers. I think the power output of grills on newer cookers has been reduced deliberately as punters can't be trusted not to set fire to the bacon...

True MtB, it has!

I have an email somwhere from one of the caravan grill manufacturers, explaining that the 'missing' bit of the flame in the centre of the burner is intentional, and is there for 'efficiency and safety' reasons, and that it didn't affect the performance of the units! Lol....

The bulletin was issued after lots of customers complained that their grills were faulty !

Thanks for the tip Mike. I've called a gas technician and hopefully the old beast can be fixed.

I'd like to try and keep my current oven, I'm rather attached to it!

Ours is an LPG which is fab but do not get one that's fan assisted!! Drains your power badly! It was already fitted when we bought it.
